PB,

great post.  ive been dreaming of a board to get me UW better and have been playing on aku shaper for some time

i now have a block of foam.  12 ft x 33in x 7 inches

i find heeling the board to one side while going up wind helps best.  rather than trying to strike a balance between displacement and planing nose, i will have both: displacement while heeling, planing while flat.  she's got some V up front which diminishes toward the back.  pretty parallel rails. low nose rocker, decent bit in the back. the rails are key, and I will need help with waterline calculations.

i'll start a new thread for it soon with cad and actual pics and updates

some people need to wear leashes at all times.  some dont.

some people need to wear leashes at all times.  some people dont need to wear leashes at all times.  and all people need to wear leashes under some circumstances.

debate resolved!

HI is expensive, big island communities vary in terms of how welcoming they can be (hilo v waimea), and if the job has a limited demand, like say nursing, even nurses from a different island may face friction.  guess it all depends. if you make it out and get work, great. if not, what's the worst? move back in w the folks?  ;D

the perfect stroke is different for every individual- height, shape, muscle and joint condition, ocean/water conditions, etc.  I don't think a jig could ever do it.  Only time paddling to dial in the most efficient stroke for you, your blade, your board, and your surface conditions.

If there's any jig, it has to be a mental one.  This is the meditative practice of standup paddling.

im working on a radical new dw board and its perfect for all conditions; it makes no excuses and no compromises.  stay tuned.  it may even fly.

Also, the best paddlers as I see it don't move their arms as much in relationship to their bodies as they're powering through their strokes.  Their arms are certainly moving a lot, but the angle of the upper halves of their arms to their body is almost fixed as they pull.  That's less true of the first guy (who is himself much better than the average paddler).

You can try it yourself.  Lock your arms completely as you stroke, and you can still stroke very well--much better than if you lock your waist and pull the paddle entirely with arm movement.

Agreed.  For outrigger paddling, I was basically taught to make a "C" or "V" with my arms and hold it from blade entrance to exit.  Use more body and less arms.

i think the bigger problem is "race to the top." educate kids better and they can fix our problems, eh?

yea, probably doesn't generate enough power to get into ocean swell...

that little spinnaker is cool!
