Gear Talk / Re: who is riding a kings board
« on: August 01, 2015, 03:24:33 PM »
The only thing better than the quality of a Kings Sup is the integrity and humbleness of the whole crew building them....I have been riding waves over 50 years and had some great boards from master shapers (Bruce Jones / Doug Haut / Shawn Stussy / Robert August / Mike Minchington / Jimmy Lewis / and more) ...but my experience with Dave has been the best.....He is a second generation master shaper and most people don't realize his experience goes all the way back to the late 70's shaping the Bronzed Aussie boards for Peter Townend and Ian Cairns.....he is one of the most open minded shapers I have ever worked with ....building what you want...not what he wants to shape....I ride larger boards than most people and he has built me two beauties  .... a 10'4" semi gun....and a 9'4" swallow tail fishey that will warm the heart of every old surfer from the 70's....Buy American......and support your local shaper....whoever you choose

I did one awhile ago like that.... trim out the holes with an exacto knife...and then used a dremel tool with a small sanding bit to clean up the edges and bevel it all out...not perfect but clean enough....used the ez - plug soft handle ...lays flat and doesn't get in the way at all....enjoy

1961 - belly boarding @ Neepee's (inside Dana Point Harbor - no longer there) Surfing since 1964 - 12 years old @ Barber's Point - Oahu - Great side story - I just had the second board I ever owned (1st New custom board I ever ordered - $150 in 1967) returned to me @ Christmas - It was stored under a friends house on the central coast for the last 20 years or so...priceless gift.....doing a restore on it now - 1967 Surfboards Hawaii Noserider - What a ton of memories this one brought back - Enjoy the ride gentlemen - it is truly a blessing to be still out there on a regular basis

Bill,

Can't tell you how much I enjoyed your book. We definitely lived a parallel life, but I am about 5 years younger, so was a little behind you on the timeline. My Dad was a 27 year career US Marine officer. Enlisted in 1942 at 17 and finished up as Chief Warrant Office. He was a hard ass, but still really a good guy, and sounds like a cupcake compared to your father. I always said I did my 18 years in the corps early. He spent alot of time with me and my friends in an old camper in the mid 60's at San Onofre when it was still private...I think those times molded me for life more than any others.....then spent a lot of time on Maui in the late 60's surfing Breakwall and Shark Pit....but my favorite wave was always Windmills.....moved back in '72 and lived in Kihei when the only thing there was Suda's and Azeka's store with the post office inside. Built Ladyland Surfboards with Del Miller (old Harbor shaper) in Kihei those years...and surfed Pakakalo and Mudflats a lot...we probably paddled by each other more than once during those years....then moved back to the mainland and spent 10 years a ski patrolman in Mammoth.....I danced around the smuggler's flame over the years....but never as close as you and your brother.....got lucky and never went too far down that road....anyway thanks for the stories and all the memories it brought back to me.....we grew up in a great era for adventure...  Stay Salty....

If you have saved any of your old wetsuits take them over to the Froghouse and have them customize them for you.....I have a long sleeve 3/2 Oneil Heat I had them cut the arms off....its old and a little leaky but perfect almost all winter in the OC....no sleeves is really comfortable for paddling.....your older wetsuits breath a little more for standup and you can always beef them up with a polypropylene rash guard if you need it....Oneil makes one with a built in hood for about $65 that is pretty handy ....I took another cheap 2 mil full suit and had Froghouse cut the legs off and make it a long sleeve spring.....really thin and leaky but pretty comfortable for fall mornings......Cost me about $20 each.....

Eric,

I have owned both the 11'11" and the 11'1" x 30" in carbon.....rode the big one a lot for 6 months and then moved on to the 11'1" ....the bigger one is so fun ....lots of glide and surfs really well for its size.....just a little bit of a handful in the beachbreak area I live in when it gets overhead....  the 11'1" is definitely a quiver killer and will handle anything you have the stones to paddle out in......it is a classic semi-gun shape...surfs really smooth and predictable...draws long lines and noserides pretty good for its shape...not long tip rides but you can perch on the front third really easily......I have done a lot of coastal touring on the 11'1" also up to 8 - 10 miles at a time.....it feels a little small for me for that but it is definitely doable and I am in the little sumo class at a solid 205 lbs.....at your size I would go with the 11'1" if you really want to surf anything of consequence..... if you are just gliding distance go for the 11'11" .... carbon is really the way to go on the bigger boards.... so much easier to carry them around...especially getting in and out of the surf...  anyway they are both great boards and you can't go wrong with either

Thanks for sharing.....Felipe Pomar was an incredible surfer and very centered human ..... I used to surf Log Cabins a lot with him in the winter of 1975....he had a house on the sand there and would always do Tai Chi for awhile before he paddled out...then be in a class of his own in the water.....one of the most under rated surfers of that era....that interview brings back a lot of good memories of him...
