Way to go, Rob!

Gear Talk / Re: Where are the Weights?
« on: January 10, 2011, 04:00:34 PM »
A while back, there was some discussion on the forum to list the weights of all our boards to provide a data base of info we all could refer to, but I guess it never got off the ground.

So in that spirit, I'll list the weights of the SUPs I've owned (incl. deck pads and fins):

11'9" Angulo Nui: 30 lbs.
10'8" Angulo Beach Boy: 28.5
9'3" C4 SubVector (Pohaku version): 22
10' ULI Lopez GL X-1: 17
14' ULI Race/Touring: 34

Since I paddle my 14-footer on flat water only and don't expect to be doing any downwinders, I'm determined to reduce my nose rocker.  On my first attempt, I weighted it down with the board on sawhorses, and it didn't seem to do much good, although I didn't measure before and after like I should have to know for sure.

Today I layed it on the ground in order to bring the tip of the nose fully into the action, and I weighted it down to the point that the board was completely flat.  After about an hour, the ground to top-of-nose distance had been reduced from 12" to 9 1/2": success!

I'm going to continue with this until my rocker is maybe five or six inches.  I figure that, for speed, the more water line the better, and less nose sticking up to catch headwinds is always a plus.

Your "after" shots look like my board is now, but I'd still like to reduce its rocker, especially in the nose, and lengthten the waterline.  You made a huge improvement, though.  It gives me hope.   :)

I ordered my Uli 14' last week and 2 more paddles.  I really hope it doesn't have the same rocker issue.  I need all the water line I can get!

Did you order a single or double-skin?

I weighted mine down as recommended, and it didn't seem to reduce the rocker, although I didn't take before and after measurements like I should have.  Also, I only weighted it for about an hour, and my rocker is mostly in the nose and isn't too extreme.  (I'll post a pic when I have more time.)  I've got it rolled up in reverse, and I'll try weighting it for several hours in the sun next time.

All that aside, I'm really happy with it!

My wife and I paddle together with this similar setup.  I paddle a 12'1 Laird and she paddles a 14' FG Current Designs SOT kayak.  Granted I am still learning but am getting faster and more balanced each week.  Bottom line is that my board is FFFFFLAT and as such creates a lot of friction on the waters surface.  Her SOT is a V hull with a sharp entry and much more hydro-dynamic.  IMO there is no way to outpaddle (speed) the kayak with the SUP.  But, I am having more fun and definitely working a larger group of muscles.

The OP's friend will be on a 9' recreational tub, not a 14' Current Designs Kestrel: night and day.

OK, here is the results from an experiment today.

I paddled a Walden 9.4 magic SUP, my friend paddled a 9.4 Cobra Stike sit on top surf kayak.
And no ,this was not your department store boat (tub) or inexperienced boater (over confident chump).

I come from a 40 year back ground of white water and touring kayaking and a life time of surfing all kinds of crafts the world over, and a few years of SUP surf and touring, so this one caught my attention. I was instantly curious..here is how it went for us.

The "race"
Head wind, both competent on our chosen craft. Similar age and fitness.
We went head to head flat out for about three minutes and stayed together for the duration of the "race". A tie for the short distance.

My sense is that over any distance and ideal conditions the kayak will be the fastest and most versatile.

Keep stroking the stoke...cg

Well, compared to Rob's future race, this one was loaded in favor of the kayak:

1: A 9-4 SUP vs. an 11-footer
2: A surf kayak vs. a recreational tub
3: A headwnd, which puts the SUPer at a huge disadvantage.

Even so, they still tied!   :)

What board feels more like a normal SUP? From what little info I can find the double skin might be better since it can take more PSI.  Although the lighter weight might be faster so idk.  I will be using it in the ocean and intracoastal so no river/rocks to worry about.

Also it looks like their website has been updated to say single fin now.

I haven't had a chance to try my friend's single-skin yet, but I'll let you know when I do.

The single-skin would probably be quicker off the line due to the lower weight, but once up to speed, I'm guessing the weight of the double-skin would lend itself to better maintaining momentum.

As far as which would feel more like an epoxy, I would think the unique feel of any ULI would trump any small differences between them, although possibly the greater weight of the double might tend to counteract a tiny bit of the "ULI bounce," which I personally like, BTW.  It makes me feel more in touch with the water, and it's softer underfoot, although in rough conditions it's more of a challenge.

I didn't know about the psi differences.  I thought 18 pounds was about the sensible limit for all of them.  I've paddled mine at 15 and 17 psi, and I couldn't feel any difference, but I'm going to continue to alternate until I can.

I'd say it mostly boils down to length.  A 9-ft. kayak -- and particularly a sluggish recreational shape -- is going to have a severely limited top speed.  With the kayak paddle and a strong paddler, it might  be quick off the line, but once you get that 11-ft. SUP moving, it''s length alone will be the difference.  My money's still on the SUP.

I probably don't need to mention this, but I will anyway:  Don't let him direct the race into an even mild headwind, where your upright body will act as a sail and hold you back.  In fact, depending on your scruples, you might opt for a nice tailwind.   ;)

Hey Rob,

I've had two Angulo SUPs in that size range, an 11'9" x 31" and a 10'8" x 30.5", along with various kayaks, and I guarantee I could have smoked a paddler of comparable ability/fitness paddling a 9' rec (fat and plastic) kayak on smooth water with either SUP.  Of course, if the water gets rough enough, other variables come into play, but I think that's beside the point when it comes to a question of speed vs. speed.

Unless your SUP is particularly slow for some reason, that little round "kayak" will be in your rear-view mirror before you know it, IMO.

My only question is, why is this guy so confident?  Your typical person paddling a 9' recreational kayak isn't likely to be the strongest or most experienced you'll come across, if you know what I mean.  So if $$ is involved, either the guy is an overconfident chump, or he's the real deal and knows he could paddle a garage door and whip you.  I'd check up on the guy, and if he's the former, prepare to collect!

Hi Nick,

I have a 14' double-skin, and it weighs 34.5 lbs.  My friend has a single-skin at 25.5 lbs.  Both have single fins, which I'm pretty sure are standard, in spite of what it says on the website.  I don't know anything about the 15-footer.

I've only had it a few weeks and haven't GPSed it yet, but it feels much faster than my previous dual-purpose boards.  I love the convenience: I keep it rolled up in my van, and when the surf's flat, I'll just pull it out and enjoy a nice flat-water paddle.  This is my second ULI and is top quality, as always.

Woody: Nice vid!

DJ: Thanks for the info!  Mine has a bit of nose rocker that I wouldn't mind reducing some.  I didn't know it was possible.  I'll try the sawhorse method and report back.
