General Discussion / Re: High Performance SUP suggesting

If you want hi-performance, try an asymetrical tail SUP they work amazing and really put the fun back in surfing.

The theory being you can apply more pressure on your toes than you can off your heels, so the board is actually a little shorter on the backhand side, with softer more forgiving outline and rails. The fins are set relative to the distance from the tail, the frontside is a swallow tail, and where it meets the stringer it starts the round pin on the backside rail. The backhand side fins are a little closer together, a cluster effect. Everyone who's tried it has been blown away at how much fun it is.

I made a 8-6 asymetrical sup for demo and got some positive feedbacks and it got sold right away it was for goofy footers and so I made a 7-9 x 29 asy for regular footers, that will be ready for demo next week. I really love my 9-3 asy and am a believer now, the cutbacks are insane! Here some pics of the 8-6 x 30

figuring out where to put the fins was tricky, but I pretty much kept them the same in relation to each tail, the frontside tail is longer than the backside tail and a little more gunny.

yeah it's made for a goofy foot to surf either way.

I have been wanting to try an asymetrical tail SUP for a long time and finally made one, a 9-3 x 32 swallow tail on the frontside rail, and a round pin on the backside rail. After finally getting some nice sessions on the north shore of Maui to give it the real test, I am really stoked on it! The off the tops frontside and the cutbacks are insane and the backhand bottom turn is super smooth. I really think this is a good idea and worth trying for anyone looking to open up your surfing.

Sessions / Surfing alone
« on: October 16, 2020, 02:12:03 PM »
Just came back from surfing Kanaha all by myself this morning for almost 2 hours. Where the heck was everybody I kept wondering, found out later there were waves on the south side, but heck, I'd rather surf north shore anyday. Waist to head high, glassy with light offshores, a little wait between sets but made paddling back out easy. Got picked off by the biggest sets cause they broke farther out than most. With the park closed till 7am. nobody else wanted to walk in. After 1 hour and 50 minutes I finally saw 2 people paddling out.

I use this stuff called Costa Coat, it looks alot like the concrete sealer  I was using before but it lasts for years. It's a wipe on refinisher for RVs and boats and works really, really well. It takes about 5 coats to get a good shine, but it lasts for years. It is expensive, $200. a gallon, but I have a board that is almost 4 years old now and it looks as good as the day I put it on. You can find it online.

I made a 5-7 x 28 for a customer who wanted it as lite as possible and I finished it with pad and straps at 11.8 lbs.

Yeah, we can still surf on Maui, but nobody is working or going to school, so what else is there to do, but surf. With all you friends and their friends. We are having a good spring at least, but nobody is making money or buying boards so business is slow.

I found a great product for sealing/finishing boards it's called Costa Coat, I used to use concrete sealer but it yellowed after awhile. This stuff stays shiny and lasts for years. It goes on like concrete sealer, wipe it on, even looks just like it. It's expensive though, $200. a gallon, but I put it on one of my personal boards 3 years ago and it looks just as good as the day  I wiped it on, oh yeah, it takes at least 5 coats to get shiny, but it is worth it.

What's the point, they are only designed for foiling, or maybe big boy bodyboarding?

I have no idea, all my boards are hand shaped, no computers, so I can't help you there.

Made a 6-10 x 30 x 4 for a team rider (73 year-old Grom) out of 1# foam, with a high density foam vacuumed deck, 12 lbs. before sanding.
