Thanks.

I am about 240.

I think the foil is too big.

Foil SUP / Foil placement for Starboard Carbon 6'6 SUP
« on: June 07, 2021, 08:06:07 PM »
I just picked this up.

I was using a Naish 2450 on the board.  It just seems off. Is it the foil?  It paddles in then lifts uncontrollably and bucks me off.

I can usually foil fine but I cannot seem to figure this one out.  Is the foil too big?  Do I need to move it back in the box?

That one I found was gone.  So I am back on the hunt for a new wing.

The shop nearby only got starboard wings.  Are those any good?

5
I'm pretty much your size. You need a 6m hands down. And a good stiff one. Like a Duotone Unit, Ensis, or Cabrinha Mantis. A stiff wing is mandatory for a guy your size.

Thanks.

Will check those out.

Which one do you recommend?

Thanks Ponobill and everyone else for the replies.

Sorry I should mention.  I am a very proficient foiler.

I can surf it.  Link turns.  Pump. Etc.

I actually learned on the back of the boat and then moved up and progressed.

Now I just want to learn how to put the wing into the equation...

Thanks for the tips surfcowboy and gone_foiling.

I think I will try to use a 6.

I live on Eastern Oahu so no shortage of wind.

Just want to make sure I can learn it.

Just learning to Wing Foil.

I have researched and researched and am still trying to learn but cannot seem to figure out this part.

If I am using a larger foil wing does that mean I can use a smaller wing?

Example- I have a naish 2450 Foil.  Can I use a 4 Meter Wing instead of a 5?

What wing size should I be using? I am 6'3 and around 250 pounds.

I tried out a Naish 7m once but the thing was so big and huge it was kind of difficult to hold.

Thanks for any help.

SUP General / SUP in Newport, RI?
« on: March 14, 2020, 01:23:21 PM »
Is there a SUP scene in Newport or Middletown?

Shops I can purchase a board from?

Breaks to avoid? Breaks to go too? I’m going to be moving there and don’t want to upset anyone.

Thank you.

I just pulled the trigger too. Also got the supertech.

Sale said continental us only but it let me check out and I paid the 250 for shipping. Guess we will see if they ship it out to Hawaii. Wonder why it said that? Maybe cause international orders?

How long did it take to ship when you ordered?

I think I’m going to order too

I had a board custom shaped for offshore reefs.

Highly recommend custom shaped boards for this size.  Ask for EPS 2.0 lb foam and 6 + 6 Oz S glass top and bottom and a goretex screw vent.  This combination will give you good responsiveness and a bulletproof board that will last a very long time.

Mine is 12 x 34 x 5, full belly nose with a decent rocker going to performance concaves out the back.  I am still trying to figure out he best fin setup.

The board is used exclusively for offshore reefs.

I shortboard quads and thrusters.

Quads do ride differently. They won’t go vertical like a thruster and have more drawn out turns.

I really like how thruster shortboards ride. You have the control.

I will offer what not to do.

I was surfing prone at a very remote outer reef.

Three SUPs paddled out.  Two of them were on their knees cause they could not stand up in the chop because the wind was from the East.

All three were in over their head and got obliterated at the first set that came in when they were unprepared.

The spot is rocky, shallow, dangerous, and very far offshore.  They were in over their head surfing a spot where they should not have been.

They put other people in danger and would make others risk their life to assist should it have went further south.  luckily they paddled in on their own accord after that set.

SUP Sports- thanks for the encouragement. I feel determined to get this quad worked out and dialed on this board.

I’ll keep trying. I think I had too big of fins and by putting smaller fins without the foil I will have a better feel for it.

I think with so much rail engaged on a board that large if I just put smaller quad fins it’ll hold much better.
