do you happen to have a handy link to how you made the fake boom?  cheers.

I meant to copy your fake boom idea back when you did a post about it but I put the project aside. It's good to know that it has stood the test of time and that you are still using it. I might try making one over the winter.

I hope the slippery stuff on your handles washes off. I'd like to know what it is and where it came from.

Yes, I use the fake boom on all my F-one wings, and I made a different style to connect the rigid handles on my Duotone Dlab wing. Every so often I try winging without one and generally head right back to the beach to put one on. I just don't feel the need to suffer without one. The dlab comes closest to not needing a boom, but going upwind I can't one-hand it without the boom and the attachment points for a harness are not as good.

gotcha, thanks for the info.

It's an "older" one. Things age fast in this sport! It's an actual buckle that clips together, not just the place for the webbing to turn like they have now. One of the two tongs on the clip broke.

any chance you have a photo of what broke?  i'm using the 2022 NSI minimalist harness.  the harness is stout, including the strap buckle...so i am curious about your harness failure.  maybe you have a different version of NSI harness.

I have the NSI harness with the plastic buckle. They have caved in and don’t have the plastic buckle anymore.

I find it’s great aside from a few quibbles. I’ve snapped board leashes while flying away in the air and the board nosediving which left a welt on my back whipping to me. Harness held just fine.

Paddling through surf on the coast I had to eject from my board and wing when a huge set bore down on me. Just squeezed the buckle and I swam free. Board and wing were attached to each other at the harness but were safely 20ft apart with both leashes maxed out. Swam in and grabbed them before they got the beach. No gear issues.

Eating my words. A plastic tong on the buckle of the NSI harness snapped on me after a nasty crash. Wing and board attached to the harness. Fortunately the harness acted like a sea anchor and I could catch the board before I got swept to no-man's land with miles of cliffs.

I was able to use the climbing carabiner (non-locking, super light) that I use for my wing to connect the harness back together and ended my session using the harness. I've used it again a bunch of times like this. I don't want to buy a new harness now when I know a few good ones are coming out in the spring. Vinaka pro? Will pick up a new buckle somewhere.

I saw a windsurfer with a dyneema hand-sewn harness with a metal spreader bar and absolutely zero padding. It had to be lighter than mine. Some interesting options.

Probably 3 feet peak to trough or less.  Depends how close to the boat. I'll likely hide behind a bridge pile/column until they pass. Then game on.

For financial reasons, maybe I should shape a few boards. Who sells super thick blanks at up to 8 feet long?

Might even want to think about supplementing any board you get with a foil drive.

How big of wakes are you talking about?

Foil SUP / best foilboard for paddle catching wake from boat passing by?
« on: October 21, 2022, 10:00:35 AM »
the new DW foiling discipline and boards have caught my attention.  i live near a powerboat two-lane 'highway' with tons of wakes all weekend long...potentially a wake play ground just outside of the main boat channel.  likely paddling into second or third wake a distance from the boats just outside the main channel.  probably pair the board up with an axis 1300 foil.

curious if there is a particular board well suited for this?  off-foil balance, acceleration, swing weight on foil, etc.

I like how the cutouts prevent excessive bulking up of the grip.  What inner diameter works well for the tube?

I buy all my boards from Jim...also with a 3 hour drive each way.  Worth the trip for a conversation with nice, extremely knowledgeable folks.  Unbeatable prices as well.

thanks guys.  it seems it can make this happen, but not w/o cab etc.
i was hoping for a shop w/in walking distance of the CC.
closest i found was seaforthboatrental.com  they said to take the Mission Bay ferry to Glorietta Bay, get dropped off near their shop, and they have SUPs for rent...but I think only softtops.

SUP General / SUP rental near San Diego Convention Center?
« on: February 01, 2012, 05:13:03 AM »
headed out to San Diego for a work conference...but not all work!

any good places to rent a SUP near the convention center?  i won't have a car, so the rental place would need to be essentially on the water or within walking distance.  i'm open to bay or ocean paddling.

thanks,
tom

Travel, Trips, Destinations / SUP in Key West, Marathon, ??
« on: April 11, 2011, 04:18:48 AM »
I'm headed down to the Keys next week.  I was there 5 years ago, SUP was nonexistent...there was no place to rent an SUP.  Have things changed I hope?

Any recommendations on where to SUP?...both waves for me, and flat water exploring with my non-surfer friends?

Thanks, Tom
