SoCal / Re: Are PFDs being enforced in Dana Point?
« on: July 09, 2020, 05:50:29 PM »
Yeah.  It was like a Laser, but with a lot more sail area.  And it was the first day I ever sailing it.
I did learn.  One race,  I capsized 4 times and still finished third.  Yes there were more than 3 boats.

Many winters ago and mid-week, I capsized a small boat on a windy day.  I couldn't get it back up.  After a few minutes struggling, a harbor patrol boat showed up to help.  It didn't bother me that they were armed.  They had the skill and knowledge I needed at the time.

On a different day with a different sheriff in a different mood the results may vary.

PFDs are required.  When I paddled in Newport I wore a leash for me.  And I wore or carried a PFD for the law.  Some of the belt types can be carried or worn, others have to be worn.  It will state this on the label on the pfd.

Even when paddling with friends you are usually keeping at least 6 feet apart.
Did they think about that?

For about the last week, every time I go go to Standup Zone Forum, I get Blue Planet Wingsurfing vid and tips.
This just happened again.
I can then click on Show unread posts like normal.

The GoPro zip tie mount is made for that type of application.
I tried, but failed to get a picture.  However, it was easy to look up.

Windwarrior—
Nothing is missing from the story.  Somewhere early in this post, there was mention of carrying a knife.  But, the writer had never seen anyone carry a knife.
I reported seeing someone wear a knife on a regular basis.  I never asked him why.
That’s all.

A paddler in Newport Beach always wore a dive type knife on his calf.  Most of the time he paddled out to the ocean for a two hour paddle.

Sometimes a direct line isn’t the easiest.  Head out a little, so you aren’t taking the swell directly on the rail.  A small change in course can make a difference.

Training, Diet, and Fitness / Max Heart Rate
« on: June 23, 2019, 07:51:56 PM »
Finding the formula for max heart rate is easy.
I don't see how that can so easily be applied across the board.
Because I have high blood pressure, I take my reading daily at various times of the day.  My average resting heart rate is 56.
Using 200-70, my max rate should be 150.
This doesn't seem possible.
Is there any other more personalized method of figuring max heart rate?

Training, Diet, and Fitness / Re: Longer, low-intensity workouts?

I'm 70.  About a year ago, I realized that I was losing muscle mass, even tho I was paddling three times a week, for about an hour each time.
I started doing Farmer's carries, weighted squats and kettle bell type swing, using dumbbells.  I noticed a difference in my paddling within a few weeks.
On the squats and swings, I'm doing 10 set with 15 reps each.  I started with two 10 pound dumbbells and later added two 15 pounders, splitting 5 sets each.
Instead of a long workout, keep it short but hard.

Xcel Wetsuits usually has lifeguard yellow.  Also try Vapor Appreal.
