Sea anchor to hold wing offshore while paddle out? Anyone do this to get board and foil past shore break with low tide and rocks?
I have seen people use sea anchors to hold wings while they paddle in swell at Gorge this year.

If wind were side to onshore and you swam out with wing past break (~20 yards) and set wing with anchor then go back in get foil board and paddle out. I am not sure how current/swell/wind would hold wing? I would assume ocean swell would be coming in taking anchor towards shore. Wind would be pulling wing downwind? Would this hold wing safely long enough to make this happen?

Background - Baja low tides can be a bitch if it is rocky. If it is low tide and shore break. it can be a bitch. Last time I Was there we had to flip board upside down and paddle out so you did not high center on foil on rocks. I think Hawaii has same issues.

I did find this thread about sea anchors - https://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php?topic=38430.0

You really got me thinking. I reached out to them. I need a longer mast anyways. What is difference between Classic and Clydesdale?
I want a economical mast that is stiff enough for winging.

Kite Foiling / F1 mast mounting issues
« on: February 25, 2023, 08:50:23 AM »
Anyone else had issues mounting a F1 Mast (160 x90) to pocket foil boards with bolt patterns only no tracks (165 x90). I have a Kanha Shapes and recently switched to F1 and now I cant bolt mast to board....

I saw a Stringfellow adapter on Mackite but it looks heavy.
F1 has a adapter for Sup boards I could probably make work but I think I would have to machine slots to board - https://www.f-one.world/product/4-point-foil-mount-adapter/

Also my Kanha has 5/16 (8mm equivalent) holes and F one is all 6mm

Anyone else had this issue?

This should get some attention. Any of you old farts ever bruise your knee? I think I got up on it weird maybe even on my leash. It is not painful unit I try and get up. I am looking for a knee pad to only use if this happens again. almost ruined trip. Glad it was at the end. Getting better now.
I see some products out there from Gill, Ion and burton, but figured I would ask the crew?

Spot on bro. Good advice.

Thanks guys. I went out today in low tide with rocks. Started to paddle to early and got high centered. Chipped foil. I did have wing on back of harness which I think helped. Here on east cape in Baja it can be really shallow rocks (sucks), but when you get out it is epic.
I want to try the anchor deal. I think it would help reduce stress.
My buddy flips foil over and swims it out with foil in the air. I may try that tomorrow. But it looks sketchy. I may try in morning to see how it feels with out wing.

Hello
In Baja with low tides and shore break. Very intimidating. Looking for options on techniques. My friend lives here with more experience and tries a lot of different things and all seem sketchy. We both are talking about it. He  started attaching his wing to the front of harness for just this, I tried and don't like it there personally as it get tangled around my arms and head
The rocks make it so you cannot jump up on your board or you will high center and then a wave would kill you. Yesterday he went out and flipped his board upside down with the rear of foil in air facing out and straddled with his chest and paddled. He made it but the wing was still very close. Any tipsy or when he got off in deeper rolling water the foil was very close to wing and could have fell on it. Not to mention if a wave would have came in, it might have been messy.
I am thinking of adding a temporary kite leash to the back of my harness about 3 feet long. I can clip my wrist leash blow that and use his approach of paddling on top of board with foil in the air and wing upside down behind me. With the extra leash it should stay far enough away if foil tumbles or falls it could stay clear?
I have 5’4” Fanatic 95L, and Strikes that seem pretty floaty on back. A concern would be a wave breaks on wing and things go crazy, but for that to happen would have to be a monster wave and I should not be out in that.
Anybody try this approach or another approach?
Thanks
Todd

I have the 7m Strike CWC. Love it. I had the Slingwings v2 (3.2, 4.4, 5.4 and 6.4). Sold them all now have quiver of Strikes (3.5, 4.2, 5, 7m).
I ride the 5'4" Fanatic 95L and Moses 1100 and 950. I weigh 190 and ride in gusty holey wind.
It has changed the game for me.
My buddy ahs them all 8, 7, 6, 5, 4.2, and 3.5. He rides 8m or 6m when I am on 7m (right in between) he is heavier than me though.
Rode the 7m last 3 days in all sorts of wind (10 to 30mph) not a problem

I have been experimenting with different setups. First I made something adjustable with lark loops made out of a old depower kite bar.(I think it is 5mm Spectra)  It worked well. I had to adjust way down the day of first sesh.
Now I am using the same depower line. But now I am just using a simple over and under through the larks knot on strut. Basically a bowline.
I am using 38" length from attach point to point.
I saw what Dwight used but I don't want the attachment point on handles. I would rather make a clean point and attach where SS made points. My winter gloves are bulky and I think it would be hard to get hand in handle and harness connection.
I did not find a problem with flapping around hitting me. I see where it could happen.

If any thing I want to put a piece of tubing on it to keep the line formed and rigid. https://chinooksailing.com/collections/harness-lines/products/race-harness-line-replacement-tubes-set-of-2
Does anyone know the best rope to use? Spectra, Dyneema, Robline? What diameter? 4mm or 5mm?

I am going tomorrow to same spot and will try again. If I like length I will maybe try and get new rope

First Sesh
Not water but Ice. Stoked for a great sesh.
6.4 Slingwing v2 on tele’s on frozen lake. Wind 15 to 20mph. cloudy but clear. Ice with hard packed snow on it.
First part was awkward. Then I went for it.
I was all over the lake. I got the hang of the wing quick. Probably my 15+ windsurf years helped
Really glad I planned a harness set up. I rode harnessed the whole time. I did come out occasionally, on purpose and felt the difference, but overall I want to ride harnessed.
Good trick I read that helped is when tip starts to touch roll up from surface. Once I did that all was good. If you let tip go in surface and don’t roll out it will catch..

Now I am looking to improve harness line setup. I was using a old Slingshot depower line. I think it is spectra? I want to make a firm rigid line that will hold its shape. I have a few ideas and will update when closer.

Pono Bill Thanks. I recognize you from Gorge. You make a good point about weight after wet suit, Taqueria, Double Mountain, and drinking...
Sounds like my 120L will be good for a while. It also seems for me a 105L board would be a better next step if I make one.
Phils thanks. I think you are in same agreement +5 to 15 on top of my 90kg puts me in the 105L range.

I wish I would have gone to Mojave this week, but its cranking (25 to 35mph). I have never winged and did not know and got scared off only having a 4.4. My 3.2 will be here Monday and I may reload and go down. 17 hour round trip to watch to much wind...
