Got a small pool handy? Only real accurate way is to measure displaced water.

Or weight. Attach some weights to the leash plug until it is neutrally buoyant. Weight that sinks it in KG is equal to Volume in L assuming you are in Fresh Water.

I'm helping out a bit to organize the first officially CSA/ISA sanctioned Surf SUP contest on Canadian soil. We are working hard to make sure the event is top notch and it would be great to see some Stand Up Zone faces make the trip.

Press Release: Tofino, BC, July 3, 2014 - Tofino Paddle Surf is excited to announce the First Annual Tofino Paddle Surf SUP Invitational, with the support of sponsors, friends, and volunteers. The fun, competitive event invites talented and committed standup paddle surfers in Canada and beyond to shred the waves in Tofino on October 25 & 26, 2014. Qualifying surfers are stoked, educated, and part of our epic and growing international SUP community!

The Tofino Paddle Surf SUP Invitational will run as a two day event in Tofino, using a classic heat/judging panel format, and have open pro men’s, amateur and a women's divisions, for this year’s contest. It's all for fun and community and we'll be throwing in a body surf expression session for anyone who's interested and just all-around loves being in the waves!

We are proud to announce that this event is sanctioned as the official Canadian Surfing Associations Qualifying Event for representation at the 2015 ISA World SUP Games for both men and women's divisions.

The awards banquet will be held on Sunday evening, October 26 and into the night.
If you are interested in participating, sponsoring, or volunteering for the event or would like more info, please feel free to contact us at contest@tofinopaddlesurf.com

Look forward to hearing from you! See you on the beach Saturday, October 25 & 26, 2014!

I switched from a Werner Nitro to a Black Project epic pro a few months ago. 50% lighter then the Werner, with a slimmer shaft, I'll admit I was a bit skeptical at first that I'd break it, but dozens of heavy sessions later it's still mint. Shaft is made in hood river by nolimitz (they make windsurf masts) so you know it's quality. I picked up my two Nitros to take pics to sell last week and I could never go back, it feels so clunky, big and heavy.  Similar price. Www.blackprojectfins.com

I had a 9'2" x 28" RRD diamond wood a few years back that had a great shape but the crappiest construction ever. Glass was absent in some areas. I had to basically throw it away.  The board looked nice though.

In contrast I have an RRD 91l FSW windsurfing board that I beat to piss, it takes it, and I love it.

Conclusion: keep your fingers crossed.

SUP General / Re: Ride a sub-8ft SUP and still dominate the lineup?

With my 7'7" I'd say I've lost my advantage to experienced Longboarders and am somewhere in between where a kook longboarder needs to be and an experienced shortboarder who can get in early.

Standing up high is still an advantage to spot the sets and get in position early though, especially if its a big one and you need to quickly move to the outside to catch it before it closes out.

My advice?

Be a really (really) good stand up surfer able to rip on both rights and lefts. Ride a very (very) small and narrow board that barely floats you. Use a paddle no longer than your height. Be under 165 pounds and very nimble.

Check, Check, Check and whoops 185 lbs. If I go I am entering the Elite/Pro Division, so no worries.

Thanks all for the info, need to make the call asap... I'd be flying into LAX and then renting a car from there... just a weekend trip so far too far to drive.

Any predictions on that swell forecast... looks small. Will there be waves?

There isn't much accommodation information on the website. Is there anywhere nearby to camp or stay for free? It's going to cost a bunch to come down, and if my perception is correct, that is not a cheap hotel area!!!

The Kings one is pretty close. At 185lbs and Expert it says 101L which isn't too far off the 92L I actually ride.

I'm thinking about travelling down to compete in the contest at Zuma, wondering if anyone has some feedback how the events are.

Thanks!

Waddell is always fun but a 15 minute drive north.
