Hi All,

Looking for a bit of forward guidance.  I am a bit of a planner.  I am 6'3" 195 in my 50s was an accomplished windsurfer in the 80s.  Also a snowboarder, surfer and stand up surfer but have a job that keeps me from enjoying the water a ton.  Fortunately just got into foiling-mostly wing 90% and it is something I can actually do a lot more of where I live.  I am now about 12 days in-riding on foil both ways all of the time and can get and stay up wind now but always heel side.  Gybing=falling make a few but generally go down.  I am riding a 1060 front 440 rear on the aluminum 75 cm mast.  I rode the old 860 front that a friend who is an Axis dealer lent me for my most recent vacation when it was windier.  I am thinking about the black series and an 890 as the next step but curious if there are other options to consider.  I did shim my rear and that made things better with both the 1060 sand 860.  I am at that stage where I already feel like I can be on a smaller board and am making progress with expanding my wing range-I can now ride a smaller wing when it is windy but also deal with being a bit overpowered.  that said, I dont want to struggle with going way in front of my ability and not having fun and getting frustrated.  Guidance is appreciated.  I am riding an Armstrong 5'11" 115 liter board-feels big now but where i will be sailing is mostly lighter wind vs where I was riding.  Thanks all.

Anyone in CT wing foiling?  I am down in Fairfield County and would like to connect with anyone interested in going out for a wing foiling session this summer of fall.  Feel free to send me a direct message.

John

I am running Axis foils on my Armstrong Board...Again, I am a newbie but everything seems to be working great for me at this stage.  Using a 1060 and 860 front with a 440 rear shimmed.

Just wrapped up two great days.  Rode my 4.5mm wing, shimmed my rear tail wing and rode on an Axis 860 a friend lent me front foil fully powered.  On foil all the time now both ways and getting up quickly.  Still riding both ways heel side, no toe side riding yet.  Gybes are not there-getting close but have not made one yet.  Tons of seaweed-eel grass making it tougher from what I am told to gybe.  Less ventilating and rode the entire 1 mile crossing and back without any falls other than in the turns.  Really need to make a gybe-it is starting to tick me off.  No consistency to my fails-sometimes over foil sometimes i get the board around and then come off foil.  I think a bit less wind may help as I was def overpowered a lot of the time today.  The fun continues tomorrow as it will be windy again.

i now have a solid 9 days on the Armstrong 5'11".  I think it is an awesome board-only rode a few days when learning on other boards but a friend who has lots of experience rode it and loved it.  I do wish for winging I sized down one more size than I got but I will try and sup foil it later.  I think there is something to the bottom shape as touchdowns seem really easy to rebound off the chop and stay on foil.  construction is really good and the handle through the whole board is well thought out and deck pad is grippy without being abrasive.

Thanks for this thread.  It is really helpful.  I was a long time windsurfer, surfer and sup surfer-mostly sup surfer now.  51 years old 6'3" 195 pounds.  One session behind a boat and now 6 days winging.  First two days, maybe 20 seconds on foil total on my strong side-goofy foot and lots of long walks back up wind.  Day 3 and Day 4 in NC got some instruction.  Day 4 was a mess started on a 5.5 and ended up over powered and crushed on a 3.5 getting up and getting overpowered and crashing.

Day 4 was a good day-up for over 1 min at a time a few times in 12-14mph wind on a 6.5m wing

Day 5 and Day 6 I am now riding on foil both on strong side and also heel side on my weak side with no walks of shame!!!! That is the best not having to walk back.  Really shelly beaches here and booties are a must despite the fact that I dont like wearing them.  I am riding a 5'11" board with a 5.5 and 4.5 wing.  Have an Axis 1060 foil that I have moved further and further back in the box-moved it over an inch yesterday.  Still getting crazy lift in really powered up conditions.  I have only tried one gybe and ate it big time despite trying to stay really forward on the board.  I have two weeks of vacation in MA in front of me and am hoping for at least 10 days on the water before heading home.  We had surf yesterday-plenty of size but windy and I chose to head to the sound side and go winging vs surfing.  Never thought that would happen.

lots of bumps and bruises but man is this fun.

Gear Talk / Re: if you could only have one board (2021 version)

simple.  10x29 custom Infinity Trout model.  Does everything well.  Deck delamed, rebuilt heavier with a shitty deck pad and 7 years later still the best SUP I have owned.  I have a two other SUPs a RNB that was custom and a New Deal before the production run started but this board works when it is tiny and when it is big.  Now I need to find the SUP foil and Wing Foil version of this board.  Best board I have owned since Robert August made me a board in 1993.  Smiles for miles.

I got a 5'11" last week-only have two hours on it but am impressed with everything I have seen in light wing conditions thus far.  Suping this will be a challenge given my size I really like this board.  Sadly have to put it away for a few weeks given my schedule but look forward to getting back on it in August.

Gear Talk / Re: Infinity RNB vs Infinity New Deal?
« on: May 02, 2021, 07:31:23 PM »
I own both of these boards and they actually make a great two board quiver.  My RNB and New Deals are both custom that I got before the production boards came out so the dims of mine are different than what your options are today.  The RNB is a great board-stable can be quick down the line, skatey but is not what I would call an easy board to really whip around as it has a wide tail-hence why it is so stable.  The New Deal while longer, actually turns better in my opinion.  more drawn out turns but this board also works well in all types of conditions and you will benefit with the added length in your wave count.  I have ridden all sorts of prone boards before starting to SUP and have always loved lonboarding-It doesn't sound like that is what you are really into though..

If I were you, I would start with the New Deal-it is a board you will always want to keep in your quiver and maybe adding a RNB or a Bline down the road.  You might want to check out the 10x29 too along with the wider 9'6".  narrower has some benefits, but 29 vs 31 def is different on the stability side of things.

I have a custom new deal that is 9'6" by 30 and I am just under 200 lbs.  Great board.  If I was to buy one of the productions I would buy the 10x29 to have a bit more glide.

Love this board.  Is pretty loose for its size and you can nose ride.  Also works when it gets a bit bigger as well.

Thats the one I orgianally wanted but no demo in that size. But I've been told the 10x29 for glide. Thanks
I should add I have an 8’2’ custom RNB which is my better as in cleaner conditions board... I have no issues standing on the new deal even in stronger tide/chop on the east coast...

I would absolutely DM Jose Ruiz through Instagram.  Unbelievable surfer and sup surfer but more importantly a fantastic coach.  I spent a week with him and a few other instructors in Nov of 2019 through a SUP camp-levels were lower advanced to absolute beginners and he just could not be better.  Terrific guy and a local.  If he can't take you, I would be very comfortable with him telling you who to call. The camp I was with had all infinity gear from their big boards down through the Round Nosed Blurr range.  If it is big, he will be able to take you somewhere better for your group too.  You will have a great time-one of my favorite trips I have ever taken.

His instagram is supandsurf_Jose.  You won't be disappointed watching his footage on his IG too.  Feel free to reach out if you have direct questions too.

creek i was on the islands for a few weeks and was in the water almost every single day and could not believe the wind stayed down for most/all of the day for several days in a row.  I am so beat up from 6-8 hours a day in the water for days on end.  Glad to hear you are enjoying your new board so much.  Nothing better than finding a magic one!
