General Discussion / Re: Infinity New Deal 9,6 x 31

I sorted my fin set. I ordered two medium Quobba fins for the sidebites and kept my standard 7 inch centre fin. No draggy feeling…these Quobba fins are brilliant.

I’m waiting for them to bring out a 7 inch single fin for US centre boxes to complete the set.

The board feels faster and just glides better.

Interested to know if most stick to the stock fins on their 9,6? Eg. Mine came with 4.7 sides and a 4.5 centre fin.

I guess these work best in punchy surf but not convinced they there are the goods for slacker waves. I felt they were dragging a bit. Incredible hold but draggy. I’ve swapped the stock fins out fir a 7 inch centre and 3.5 sides. Yet to try them but it’s my usual go to for longboard shapes.

It definitely has some nose rocker designed in. I have my fair share of late drops and have never thought of this board as a problem that way. You're right too that the nose shape is pulled in somewhat from a traditional longboard nose. Dana Point Infinity has one they rent out. You could check mine if you're ever in Seattle.

Cheers…good to hear. Thanks

My two cents: I have one. I surf it mainly on longboard friendly rollers. I like a reactive board that can turn from the middle.  The 9'6 New Deal works that way. I'm happy. It is more reactive when you get back on the tail, but I tend not to walk around on boards so I'm not your best source on that.  Is it loose? It can be. Especially relative to its size.  Check out some videos on line and it will give you a sense.  And it has a 10" center fin box so you can control looseness somewhat by moving fin forward (and fin selection generally). Another impression is that it is fast. Stability wise it's totally fine, but I wouldn't say that it is especially stable.  It begins with inherent stability from its general longboard shape, but then its light weight, shaped bottom maybe (double concave) and domed deck and rails contribute to a more performance character.  Weight - very light. Domed deck? Yes, but not objectionable. I prefer a flat deck, but this is fine. It's technically domed, but the standing area is relatively flatter, and then the curve accentuates near the edges down to the rails. I like the board. The build quality is outstanding.

Thanks that’s really useful information. I sometimes find it hard to judge the rocker on it….has it got decent nose kick to handle a few later drops? It looks like the nose isn’t as big as some longboard shapes which is a good thing.

Wondering if anyone has one and can give some feedback on whether it’s a loose board for its size, whether you need to be over the fins, stability, weight and if it works in slack waves as well as bigger stuff. Thanks.

Oh, and how domed is the deck?

Slightly off topic but see you have surfed an Element but also the 8,5 Destroyer. How does the Destroyer compare with the Element in terms of stability and does it really need a bit of push in the waves due to its small length?
They're two different beasts. The Element is 9'8 and the Destroyer is 8'5. The Element is stable is a barge for me personally but have put first-timers on it and they can barely stay on their knees. The Destroyer took some time to get comfortable with, but I was stepping down from the 9'8 Element so I was expecting a challenge. It started as my "only on clean days" board but I can now take it out in all conditions. The Destroyer has a little bit of glide, but nothing like a 9'+ board so I've learned to catch waves pretty late. Not sure if that answers your questions, but feel free to reach out via pm and I can blab on further.

Thanks….it pretty much answers what I thought…..I have an 8ft 8 surf sup which is ace on the waves but sooooo slow to paddle and like you have to leave it late to get onto a wave. I’ve got so used to surfing longer boards now that I doubt I want to go back to short sups. Just splashed out on a 10 ft longboard!

Just pulled the trigger on a 9'2 x 30" in orange. I'm 85kg with solid intermediate skills. I've been primarily surfing the Jimmy Lewis Destroyer MP 8'5 x 30" 130L for the past two years and absolutely love it, but I'm excited to be on something a bit longer as sometimes the foreward/backward balance is tricky on the 8'5. Hopefully it's the perfect all around board for me!

I've always preferred a thruster setup... I've only ridden one board with quads - a Jimmy Lewis Super Frank 8'6 x 32" and found the setup fast and fun but slippery / skatey on head-high waves. But per Dave, the man himself, it sounds like this board should be ridden quad so I'll give it a go. Any suggestions on affordable quad fcs fins? All my fins are futures. I'm also curious what fin sizes y'all have tried on this? Cheers!

I've lost track on how many sessions I've had on it at this point and I absolutely love it. Catches fantastically green waves and performs in overhead conditions. The biggest problem with it is that I snatch so many waves it draws the attention of surfers who come over and start to crowd the spot!

Definitely surfs best as a quad, I thought it was a total dog as a thruster.

Sounds like you are having fun! I have an element too and was wondering how the 9ft 2 Kalama compares in terms of stability, wave catching and types of waves it suits best. I find the Element does most things pretty well but is a bit floaty. I’m 95 kg. Thanks

They ballsed up the Drive by making it higher volume/wider.....the original was a better size.

I had a good look around last year for a new longboard.....I eventually opted for the 9,8 Starby Element. I really like it...it surfs very well, turns brilliant with the rounded pin and handles pretty much everything I need and noserides fine too. You could shave off some volume in the nose but the concave there works well and the double concaves throughout the hull too.

It used to be marketed as a more extreme board but lately one for lighter paddlers, or women as a do it all board. Total nonsense of course as it is an out and out surfing shape. Nicely sharpened rails in the tail.

I’m not surprised they are fading them out as they now have the more expensive Starby longboards which look nice.

I’m glad I managed to get one before they discontinued them.....it’s a great allround surf shape for someone in weaker waves who also wants a forgiving shape....plenty noserocker to help with steeper last second take offs.

By adding a concave to the bottom you're adding a form of drag (as I
understand it) which sits well with the notion of hold and control.

At what point and under which circumstances do you see that translates
to lift and when too much of a concave just sticks and nothing more?

I see you guys are getting a bit confused.

Concave promotes early planing. Once planing, a board is faster, so concaves are faster in that they help you plane. Before planing speed is reached, they are not faster. Displacement bottoms are faster.

Deeper concaves tend to reduce ultimate top speed. More surface area. So in racing windsurf boards, the shallowest concaves possible are used, going to flat usually.

There are other factors, but this is the basics.

Aids acceleration in other words....

Fish shaped large swallow tail SUPs were being made years back....the French company Nah Skwell were making them....twin fins, big swallow tails etc.

I think most folks who have a lot of boards tend to go to the same one or two.....boards that you know will give you the fun time.

I’m still to find my one board quiver so to speak.....but I am getting closer.

I’m still of the view that watertime makes you a better surfer...not the board...but we all like something new  ;D

"have more fun on something better suited to the conditions and aptitude"  Hear, hear!   As one who has chased unicorns, thinking "A better horse will make me a better rider."  I could not agree mare...   I have seen guys who could style the oldest piece of crap and others who looked like they were cast for the lead in a surf movie, flail about.  It is reasonably serious money for most; spend it wisely.

Jim

SUPs are stupid money now....I point blank refuse to pay the top cash for these boards....I always go for the cheaper option...you can still get really good boards at “reasonable” prices.

Billie....Stylemaster May well be a good choice for you if you are after something to surf fatter waves. I opted for something else as I’m covered for that ... I’m after something that could cover more bases.
