I can also recommend strongly Tiago’s Mauka Lodge. Great experience.

Thx crazybula

Looks awesome! Seems like you both were making good use of the rudder steering. What are the dimensions on your boards?
The Sunova is 18’ x 25” and  the Deep is a custom 19’ x 26”.

I just ordered an unlimited Sunova 18x25.5". How is the stability of this 25" wide Sunova? How tall and heavy is the rider in the video. I have an 14x25.5" Allwater and am quite comfortable with it. I thought 27 wide would be a bit too much maybe. I weigh 82kg and am 1.79 tall.

He's about 88kg and 6ft tall, and also paddles a 24" Naish Maliko. I think you'll be fine if you're comfortable on that Allwater.

I ordered one. 18x25.5¨version. People who use it speak very positive about it. We are doing more and more downwind runs here in Mallorca, Spain therefore more people are ordering unlimiteds. I tried a friend's NSP unlimited and there is a big glide difference compared to 14 foot boards we have. I have had Sunova surf boards before and I am very satisfied with them. For training I ordered an Allwater 14x25.5¨ from Sunova and I am impressed with it. It is my daily training, light downwind board. For quite some time I wanted to order an unlimited and decided on Unlimited from Sunova because the shaper Marcus Tardrew is a solid downwind racer (was 3rd in the M2M race) so I am confident that he implemented a lot of his good ideas in this board.

I participated in that race. The scenery is amazing. The SUP crowd is getting bigger every year. The organisation is good in some ways but lack enough food and replenishments etc in the stations. Most of the participants use inflatable boards since they don't get destroyed easily and when the current is strong the speed difference is not so huge.

I use Paddle Logger but it is mainly for SUP paddling not surfing.

I guess the idea is not new but the execution seems to work this time.

Sunova racers are testing the 14’ Allwater model in two pieces version in some races.

That’s exactly what happened here in Mallorca, Spain.
Rest of the Spain and Europe still has some growth in races thanks to Eurotour and some other local races.
Short distance races became too competitive and most casual riders are focusing more on long distance races such as SUP 11 City, Spain 24 Hours or races on the rivers like Dordogne (130 km). Also downwind is getting more and more popular. The next popular thing might be SUP foiling in waves and downwinds.

Perhaps another angle on the decline of racing is not as much about boards but with the people.

The early SUP adopters started a new sport/race they could be winners at. They recruited the average joes/janes to join the party. Most of these people were on similar performance curves. It was all fun and games to race against your buddies.

Then more elite athletes showed up and blew the early adopters and average joes/janes away. Races were being catered mostly to the elites. The average joes/janes got discouraged and stopped participating.

The elite athletes soon realized there was no money to be made being elite. So they start dropping off too.

Might be a different story outside the US. Seems like the race scene in Europe has not reached a plateau.

Gear Talk / Re: Sunova Allwater vs Ocean
« on: May 01, 2018, 08:07:51 AM »
I asked Sunova riders James Casey and Kelly Margetts. Great guys indeed. They answered all my questions. Allwater is my choice at the moment because with that board I can paddle in flat, mild and small downwind. Most of our conditions are like that. I will order a 14x25’5. If I need a board for bigger downwind days then I will choose between Ocean or Unlimited.

What is your weight?

I just got my Allwater board a week and a half ago.  I've not tried the Ocean, so I cannot compare.  They do look so close it's hard to tell them apart except for color.  But if your intention is to just do a lot of downwinding, then I'd say go with the board that the manufacturer intended for that, the Ocean.  They cost the same, so I'd say that's the best bet for you.  The reason I got the Allwater is because I wanted a board that could handle open water conditions, but also didn't make me lose too much in the flats.

The only other suggestion I'd make is don't buy the board based on width.  Instead buy the one that has the right volume for you.  I got the 27" thinking the wider would be better for stability (my balance stinks), but now I think it might be more volume than I'd rather have for my weight.  I probably could have gotten the 25" and had the same stability.  I currently feel like I'm not even taking advantage for the board being a dugout, i.e. I'm riding higher than I thought I would.  But since I had to order it online, I couldn't try out the different widths before buying.  Sounds like you have the same problem.  Maybe talk with the Sunova people, or with whatever shop you are thinking of buying it from, and try to get their recommendations for which one will fit you better, based on your stats and experience/skills.

I have a 9’6 Style and use FCS II Connect Longboard Fin size 9’’ as single fin. Works perfect.

Gear Talk / Sunova Allwater vs Ocean
« on: April 29, 2018, 09:32:51 AM »
I am considering of ordering a Sunova Ocean Pro or Allwater Pro. Is the Ocean model significantly better than the Allwater Pro in downwinds? We don't have these boards in Spain yet so no possibility to test. Is Ocean Pro significantly slower in choppy or flatter conditions then Allwater? I guess what I am trying to understand is will I lose more in downwind with Allwater then I would lose in general flattish, choppy waters and upwind with the Ocean? I want to paddle mostly in downwind conditions but here in Mallorca we have typical Mediterranean winds and swells so mostly 15-20 knots and the swell period is shorter than the Oceans like 5-8 seconds max.

Sorry to say that but I am not surprised that a French rider was given a better position by French organizers. They are good at that.
