Classifieds / ISO Kenalu Paddle Blades
« on: January 15, 2024, 09:56:34 AM »
Hi Guys,

My Kenalu paddle blade is starting to wiggle and needs to be reglued.  So before I do that, I thought I would reach out and see if anyone has any old Kenalu Blades they want to unload.

Specifically, I'm looking for a Ho'oloa 84 or a Mana 82 if you got one.

I currently have a Wiki 84 and a Konihi 84 both on the Xtra Tuf shafts which I love both, but seeing if anyone wants to clear out some gear.

I am willing to pay, so not looking for handouts.

Thanks!

(p.s. ISO = In Search Of)

Okay, here are some pics of the paddle.

SUPlakes, I'll send you a message with my email, so you can contact me directly.  It will be faster and easier that way.

Happy 4th!

Reading this a little late, so I'll get some pics up tomorrow.

The blade and the paddle have no flex whatsoever.  It's a solid aluminum shaft.  But, SUPlakes, it should be perfect for what you are looking for.

I've gotten a few good deals lately on gear, so it's time to pay it forward with some of my old gear.

I have an old Kialoa you can have for $50.00.  I haven't used it in a while, and it is still in good condition.  My son used it when he was younger and the adjustability was great.  It's heavier than carbon fiber paddles, but you don't have to worry about damaging it.  I think I paid around $200 for it back then.  I can post or send you actual pics if you are interested.

Here's some info about the paddle:

The Sage words of Gerry Lopez, "Don't forget the beginners," are the inspiration for KIALOA's stand up paddle Hinalea. Featuring a foam-core blade and edged in Dynel, the Hinalea is tough enough to stand up to years of use. Add a bomber shaft of anodized seamless 6061-T6 aluminum and you have the perfect blend of lightness and durability. But the most exciting feature of the Hinalea is its 19 inches of adjustability from 67-86 inches. Lengthen or shorten the paddle to fit your entire family or let it grow with your young stand-up paddler. We highly reccommend thoroughly rinsing your Hinalea off with fresh water, inside and out, after each use.

• Blade length 16 1/2
• Surface area: 100 sq inches

Gear Talk / Re: Recommendation for High Visibility Rashguards
« on: April 18, 2019, 08:59:11 PM »
I use regular quick-dry shirts when I paddle out in the ocean for safety and visibility.  Most of them are made of the same material as rash guards and usually less expensive.  They also have more color choices and styles. (loose fit, tight fit, long sleeve, short sleeve, etc.)

Fish Tales, Stand Up style / Monster Snapper SUP fishing
« on: September 23, 2018, 03:15:48 PM »
Sharing this great catch (mutton snapper) that I had a couple of weeks ago. I was out trolling a lure about a mile offshore here off Fort Lauderdale beach.
I like to grab a rod and a net when the ocean is flat and paddle for a couple miles.  This is my first substantial catch. as I have been catching alot of smaller fish.
For reference, my board is 29" wide and the fish weighed just over 5 lbs. after scaling and gutting.

All this talk about the Mana has me thinking about upgrading from my old Wiki.

I found a good review comparing the Mana to the Konihi with good pics of the winglets also.

Check it out here:

Good question.  I'd like to see what's out there as well.

I use the Runkeeper app on my iPhone.  I track my paddle sessions with the "rowing" mode, as it also has cycling, running, walking, etc.  It also keeps distance, speed, times and calories burned for each workout.  I have it paired with a few friends, so I can see their workouts as well.

I just keep my iPhone in a waterproof case in my pocket and off I go.

SUP General / Re: Lookers versus Posters.

Maybe we need a “Beginners” category? That might help. This could be a place where anybody could post about anything. No question too basic!

I think that's a great idea to attract more members and posters.

I am a member of a Ukulele Forum and they have a Category just for beginners.  It's called "UKULELE BEGINNERS  If you are a beginner here's your board.  Ask your questions here."  You get a lot of newbies posting, with a lot of helpful answers.

They also have a board for new members called "NEW MEMBER INTRODUCTIONS If you are new to UU, introduce yourself here."  New members get a chance to learn how to post and a lot of the moderators will then welcome them and this seems like it opens up new members to post more.

Nice, but bad time for me.  Can you watch a replay after?

I thought I tore some tendons a few years ago from over paddling.  I went and saw an orthopedic surgeon and after an xray and physical tests he said it was shoulder bursitis.  He sent me to therapy with some anti-inflamitories and after 6 weeks it wasn't much better.  Went back to the orthopedic and he gave me a shot of cortisone and told me to let it rest for a few months to reduce the swelling.   At that point, just reaching over head caused a lot of pain as well as reaching over the car seat to go in reverse.  Not much fun.

It took just about a year of nothing to get back normal range of motion with no pain.  No paddling, no workouts.  Then slowly getting back into things, and now a few years later everything is back to normal.  Paddling and working out regularly.

The exercises in the videos are some of the same ones I did in physical therapy, so I still keep doing those.  And I also ended up getting a Kenalu xTuf shaft with the small Wiki Blade which really is easier on the shoulders.

SUP General / Re: Waterproof Phone Case
« on: August 26, 2016, 09:55:30 AM »
This spring I bought a waterproof Punk Case for my IPhone 5s and chipped one of the edges within 2 months.  The case was nice and watertight when I took it in the ocean a few times.  I would recommend this case for light duty water use, and it is a good value.  Very lightweight and slim, but not heavy duty.

I replaced that with an Otterbox waterproof case and it felt a little bit sturdier and has been watertight when taken in the ocean.  This one feels a little sturdier than the Punk Case and more durable, and recommended.

Both of these cases were good values because my phone is now an older model.  I got both of them for $20-$25 each, marked down from around $60-$80.

I always worry about the seals though, because I open them everyday to charge the phone.  So I like the idea of adding a waterproof bag on top for serious water days.  Light paddling days, I feel worry free for a quick dunk with my current Otterbox case.

I really wanted to like this movie, but it was a let down.  I got pumped up by seeing all the previews and the behind the scenes footage, but that ended up being better than the actual movie.
