Thanks for the idea - we thought a long time about that one. But there's no cell coverage out there and the Lake is too big. We've done the crossing a few times now, and you're invisible in no time.

Hi everyone, the first ever 32-mile paddleboard race across Lake Ontario this set for this year, and paddlers have started looking for escort boats. Some details: Date: September 10th or 11th Location: Crossing from NOTL or Fifty Point Beach, to Cherry Beach in Toronto (depending on wind). Time: 7 am. Paddlers will be on the water anywhere from 5 to 8 hrs. Boats: VHF radio; big enough to carry a 14' board (if necessary). Each boat will follow a paddler across the lake (think M20 or Catalina). A field of 35 paddlers is set, and it should be an amazing and widely-followed community event with people coming in from 3 provinces and 5 states. Compensation will be agreed on by each boat/paddler, but drivers can expect to have all of their gas/travel costs covered, at minimum, plus some extra for their time. If anyone has any contacts on Lake Ontario, please let us know. Thanks! More race info is here: www.niagara2toronto.ca

Just an addendum to this thread, this will be a race next year. (2016). Props to SpecialK for taking the initiative to get this off the ground.. http://niagara2toronto.ca
Hey, thanks Muskoka - we are stoked about next year. The crossing is such a unique experience and we really want to share it with others. And we definitely need something of this magnitude in the northeast...

Checking back here a year later, with one more crossing in the books. This year was a bit slower but a lot more interesting with a building SE swell. Here's a quick report: https://lakeontariocrossing.wordpress.com/2015/09/27/16/You never know what you're going to get out there on the lake! And it's getting more interesting now too given that we have a benchmark time to chase.

Great, thanks for the reply... a pretty important feature I'd say.

Does anyone know if the rudder can be locked in on the Bullet 14 V2?
i.e., fixed fin/rudder on the days you don't need the A.S.S.
Thanks

Really funny that you should post here today.....I am pretty sure I questioned you last night on a Standup Journal FB post
I looked it up and it wasn't me - but glad to see I'm not alone! The axe had a leash on it, but you're right - no direct way out without it.

I'm realizing that the non-paddling/surfing shots are almost as important - here's some action from Lake Ontario this weekend. We've got a 10 foot ice wall 100 yards out from what is our sandy beach in the summer. No lack of variety here! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXkiyDvQG7cPS: Clamp mount is very useful (though not on the water). Just grab a 2" spring clamp at a hardware store and put a sticky mount on it. It will cost like 5 bucks and you can stick it on anything - tree branches, fence posts, tables, icicles, etc.

For your interest... most likely the first prone crossing of Lake Ontario, and 3rd SUP crossing. At minimum, we're setting the bar at sub-6 hrs for others to beat. The route is just under 50 km (31 miles). Go ahead and call it the Canadian equivalent of M20 (with less swell), Chattajack (less scenery) and Catalina (less history). Joking aside, this is a big and exposed paddle, and Great Lakes have been known to sink ships... https://showerboyproductions.wordpress.com/2014/09/17/lake-ontario-suppaddleboard-crossing/

Would moving up to a longer 18' unlimited board from a 14' board warrant a smaller blade?
I notice after moving to the 18' board a much heavier load on the shoulders and lower cadence. I'm thinking a smaller blade for the longer board would bring the cadence (and speed) up.
Any thoughts on this?

Pocket Fuel sounds good - but maybe a bit hard to deal with? For the record, Hammer bars are also basically almond butter with some extra stuff added. A lot of calories in a condensed package that you can take 1 bite at a time.

I hear ya... maltodextrin? All i know is Gatorade makes me hurl, but I can go hard with HEED. The calories in the other stuff comes from simple sugar - I'm sure that's why.

I'm in the middle of dialing this in right now... here is what I've learned so far:
-Sugar kills. Avoid Gatorade, etc. Use HEED or something similar instead. -You need to watch your calories, not just hydration. -So far I've been good with 200-250 calories/hour (I'm about 185 lbs).
Basic recipe for 4 hours of paddling:
-3L of fluid (camelbak), with 5 scoops of HEED. This hydrates and gives you about 150 cal/hr). Drink every 10-15 minutes, starting right away. -Mix and match gels/shot blocks/nutrition bars to get another 100 cal/hr. Eat something every half hour. I find I need a combination of both gels and bars. Gels alone leave me hungry, but bars alone fill my stomach too much. -The goal is to keep the calories coming in steadily, starting right away. For example, I'll bite off a third of a bar at 30 mins, a gel at an hour, some more bar at 90 mins, etc... All the while, drinking.
That's a rough sketch. The exact formula depends on what you like, how many calories you need and takes practice to dial in.
But no question, eat/drink early and often... if you let yourself get hungry, you're done.

Haha the pine trees totally ruin it. Looks more like Vancouver Island than Bells...
