Shimming the rear wing (with the triangle shim) does seem to make a huge difference.  No sudden drops, gives plenty of warning, and only once going very slowly. I'm on a 420 rear.

Also felt the extra drag though, so doesn't come for free.

I don't trust my head for this, I know I can bullshit myself.  if you've got both tails, please try them and let me know what you think. Could the tail change this thing so radically??

I'd also love to hear the answer to this.
I was reading your original messages about it not stalling for anything and thinking that just didn't correspond with my experience. And I'm quite a bit lighter 

I am also finding that if you get too slow it can suddenly drop out on you. This make things like tacks more challenging - if you lose speed you go down, really got to drive through it.
I'm riding with a 420, but also rode it with a 400 and from that point of view felt similar.

I'm amazed that a tail wing could make such a difference to this.

You want to size down everything for big wind.
Most important is the right size wing (hand wing).
A BRM cloud 2.2 is perfect. Maybe one of the smaller mantises.
Then  If there's any fetch, the swell is going to start getting really solid. You want a wing that's fast enough to ride it without blowing out. Maybe one of the new high aspect wings or a fast surf wing. Something like the axis 830.
Then for boards you don't need much, but whatever you're on your need decent starting technique.
Having the right gear is the difference between an epic session and taking a beating. For me with the gear mentioned above, 35 knots is comfortable, 40 is manageable, above that is starting to be just holding on.
It also depends on the location, some places are going to be a washing machine in those kind of winds, and then you really have to be on your A game. Danger levels go up when there's a lot of white water about. From what I've seen of gorge footage it seems ok in that way.

The mast ventilation issue reported here has nothing to do with the wing - and it's not an axis only thing, except indirectly with the HA foils by being faster and more efficient.

It's a result of 3 factors, the upward angle, the speed, and the mast section, and in particular the thickness of the mast relative to its chord.

It is caused by the water flow around the mast switching from laminar to turbulent flow. I'd imagine this creates an area of lower pressure around the mast, sucking in air, causing it to ventilate.

I'd imagine a longer mast gives more time to react before the air makes it down to the wing, which I think is the point when it it becomes unrecoverable.

I've never heard of it for masts with a thickness of less than 14mm, and I'd be very surprised to hear any reports of it for the axis carbon mast in any situation. However for the 19mm axis aluminium mast this effect is likely to come into play.

In the case of the HA axis wings such as the 980, you are able to go faster and at a great angle upwind than on other surf foils. Probably why nobody has reported it on any of the slower wings.

It was an often reported problem with the original liquid force kitefoil mast that had quite a narrow chord, but was quite wide at 20mm. I experienced it using the project cedrus mast (also 20mm thick) with various kitefoils when I cranked it hard upwind, more so with faster foils. I've never experienced it with the cedrus mast with any surf or wing foil, including the axis 980 v1, which is what I'm currently riding. I generally don't ride highly powered though, not by choice at least.

Close to VB_Foil above. In knots:
5m - 12 - 15.
4m - 16 - 20
3m - 20 - 25
Once it gets much above 25 knots, the 3m feels a bit much. I think a 2m would be perfect. As I don't have one, I prefer to kite in this range, as well in the sub 12 knots range, though I hardly do this.
As with kite foiling, there's a large range you could ride, depending on your style and how powered up you like to be.
For me, I prefer strapless low powered, just enough wing to get me up and riding and onto the next swell.
