SUP General / ...leash positioning...
« on: January 12, 2019, 04:33:40 AM »
Greetings- haven't posted here in 5 years :o

Been out of the sup game for over 2 years mostly due to injury (hip)

Finally, had hip replacement surgery 1/4. Looking to get back on the water in spring.

Being away so long I noticed folks are wearing (flat water) leashes now on upper calf and waist. When I stopped paddling I remember everyone wore leash on ankle.

What gives?

Gear Talk / Re: Scuba suit for SUS
« on: September 19, 2016, 04:51:54 PM »
Thanks for all the responses gents- insightful feedback.....I've got a ton of winter wear when I'm flatwater, I come from years of surfski training year round so I have options; 2mil farmer to pair with fleece or semi dry top, 3/2 for colder days, neo pants matched to fleece on mild winter days....had a kokatat semi drysuit for a few years when surfski paddling, never really liked it, just me I guess...

I'm looking to surf more than ever this winter.

Glad to hear supthecreek is in my boat...I also like the options of swapping different mil sizes with two piece sets...

Gear Talk / Scuba suit for SUS
« on: September 18, 2016, 04:50:42 AM »
So, back story: 55yo with bad flexiblity all over, have an increditably difficult time getting in and (especially) out of my 6/5/4 front zip suit. Love the warmth of the suit even in January, toasty as can be (and I run cold).

Has anyone ever SUS in two piece diver style suit? In small conditions would one expect too much flush? Seeing as how I have descent balance I spend little time in prone position so front zip shouldn't be an issue.

I SUS only in small Jersey conditions, I am acutely aware of my limitations and choose my days accordingly.

Found a 3mil john/jacket on CL for only $40, if it was closer I'd buy it in a second to try myself....but not sure I want to travel hundred miles for it.

Any feedback would be grand.....!

In the past I have paddled hundreds of times out of forge pond down the mantoloking river- in fact we chose to paddle Sunday late afternoon to train in heavy boat chop! We were a group of 5 to 10 surfskis, very low profile view for boaters...

That said, we would paddle just outside channel markers, then more towards the sides of main river- it was a rare instance that any conflicts arose, boats stay pretty much in the center of the river....

I mainly paddle the ocean this time of year- I guess if I were to paddle in a boating envioment I would where a bright rash guard just to be on the safe side!

Good luck with your journey

Scott

Great handy work there.... I built a kayak erg from a nordictrac that performs as good as a kayakpro erg....I love homemade projects like this!

Can you post pics of the top and other side (where the chain is), close up pics so I can see your construction?

Thanks, Scott

Hey bluecoast- was gonna call you Saturday, but our road trip was last minute thing.... my buddy and I loaded the boards up and drove around to see if there were any launch spots. didn't think there was any access down by you so we headed up toward Bayville. Got to one roadblock and asked the police if we could park over by Berkeley park to launch. He looked at us kinda like we were nuts but I guess we didn't fit a looter profile..!

Berkeley island park got hit hard, amazing how much of our bay sand and mud is every where. Did a quick 4 miler up cedar creek- not too much damage, a few boats sunk, some docks crumbled but homes seem to fair well.Very humbling seeing the folks cleaning up-  after asking if they needed a hand, gave them the thumbs up , they smiled as we paddled along...

Returning to the park we were approached by the police again- after he checked us out (hard to loot plasma tvs on the deck of a sup) he asked how things looked from our vantage point...

This storm changed the face of our iconic jersey shore- but we are JERSEYSTRONG- we will rebuild...better than ever and the beauty of our shores will shine again..

Gary, we are mintues from each other- if there is no surf me and my bud launch form berkeley island park after work. Usually paddle into wind for 1/2 hour then turn and DW.

We have been meaning to do a point to point DW but lately works been getting in the way. There is a park at the end of beach blvd in forked river that's 5 miles to Berkeley park.

We have 14' boards for the bay. Watcha paddling?

Scott

Live in the pine barrens(Forked River) of NJ- but can have my feet in the Atlantic in 26 minutes (if I catch the lights green on rt 37)

90% surf or cruise seaside park area

10% flatwater/downwind Barneget Bay

Any Ocean County paddlers looking for downwind runs on the Bay we have a trailer setup to handle at least eight boards.

Hey Jerseypaddler...I'm Gary from Waretown. I'd love to meet up for a downwinder one day. I'm always looking for someone to paddle Barnegat with, I don't see too many people down my way.

supguy35 (Keith) is a good guy, definitely hit him up for demos if you're in the Jersey area.

Doing my first race (6miler) on Sunday....I'm pretty sure my nsp14 will up to the task- question is if the engine will be ready???

Spent many years racing kayaks, then surfskis...did the Mayors Cup and all the regional NorthEast races..but,  I am really anxouis and excited to start this new chapter of SUP racing....I am digging the simplicity of sup...paddle?check, board?check, leash?check..... Go paddle!!!

Gear Talk / Re: Fin suggestion for 14 NSP Coco Mat
« on: August 20, 2012, 04:13:51 AM »
I am wondering the function of the stock fin in that nsp 14?

It appears very few boards (or aftermarket fins) use that style fin.

Coming from surfski boats, we do see that style rudder for big downwind days so does that hold true for sup?

Greetings,

I used to do this race on a surfski- now I'm digging the sup thing and am considering making this my first sup race!!!  www.lighthousetolighthouserace.com

Anyone around the northeast plan on attending? I appears last year there were a handfull of sup in the 7 mile race and a couple in the 14 miler...

I'm heading up from jersey and hope its not a bust...
