Classifieds / 2014 Starboard Allstar Carbon 12'6" x 25.5"
« on: June 11, 2016, 08:09:39 AM »
Ok, for everyone upset with the PPG decision to go back to 12'6" boards, I have the board for you.

2014 Starboard Allstar Carbon 12'6" x 25.5".  Perfect condition, no repairs or damage.  Purchased summer of 2015 brand new. Actually preferred the sunken deck of the 2014 way more than the thick deck on the 2015.  An amazing open ocean board but still fast in the flats.  Always rinsed and stored in the garage on a rack.

Asking $1200 and located in Irvine/Newport, California

Very sad news.  About people not jumping in to help, reminds me of a bad situation at Dana Point last year.  On a busy summer Sunday I was there paddling with my grandson.  A couple of ladies had rented boards from Westwind and were just down the first channel.  One lady had fallen off and was having trouble getting back up on her board.  The PFD was keeping her afloat but making it hard for her to get back on.  She started having a panic attack.  There were people all around, but no one seemed to care.  I paddled over and got her to hold onto the straps on my board.  I just got her to calm down and let her know it was going to be OK.  Now I have my 4 year grandson on the board and a larger lady who is very nervous hanging on and I am trying to paddle back to the dock.  A small boat is cruising by and I ask them to radio the harbor patrol that the woman is in distress (harbor patrol is just down the channel).  They start asking me all kinds of questions and say she looks OK and they speed off.  I am shocked and just put my head down and do the best I can.  We make it to the end of the dock and a Westwind girl is there and I ask her for help.  She has no clue what to do (they rented the boards and apparently have absolutely no safety devices). Tells me to paddle into shore.  Well we make it in and everyone was OK but I left there really kind of shaken up by how people behaved.  People really have this idea that you have a long time once someone starts drowning.

Be safe, have fun  Jill

I would look at the Lahui Kai 11' x 29". I think this is Annabels touring board. Nicest board in their line up for women. Much less volume than the race boards. Check it out on their web page. They will ship for free.

If all else fails drive to So Cal and pick up a used board down here cheap. So many Sup boards on Craigslist at way less than half price.

Have fun. Jill

I have bought at least 5 ULI boards used, never any problem with them. Boards all continue to hold up great year after year. I do store the boards inside inflated at 10 psi.

When looking for a ULI I search all of Craigslist. You can always have it shipped to you.

Have fun. Get something and get on the water

No PFD required. Sheriff at Newport are super friendly to SUP, only nice things to say about them. Have fun

Bark Contender. Low volume for her lightweight and plenty wide. At her weight extra volume can make a board unstable, get h r on a low volume race board and she should feel the difference.

She could look at the new Bark Vapor but for flat water I like how quite the Contender paddles

Yep they have been doing this for the past month. Really strange the difference between the sheriff at Dana and Newport. The sheriff at Newport have always been very friendly and never mention anything about PDFs. And Dana harbor could fit in the turning basin at Newport.

Thanks for the reminder. Jill

Did I this is really happen this weekend?  If so I cannot imagine any place in So Cal that was 75. Almost 100 in Newport Beach all weekend.

I remember talking with Joe about carbon boards and he hates the black bottoms. Some guys just wanted it because less paint and weight. He especially had trouble with team riders leaving boards out in Hawaii sun, they would melt just like yours.

Might just be time for a new board. You made a mistake, learn from it and move on. Just like driving into the garage with your $8000 bike on the roof of your new BMW.

Have fun. And don't leave any boards in the sun, white black pink whatever

My Uli weighs about 24 lbs but it seems like the lighest board I have because I do not have to be careful with it.  I can always just drop it.  I always leave it blown up to 15 for storage and pump it up to 20 to paddle.  This is only because I am not using it frequently.  It should be just fine to leave at 20 for extended times, I would double check with ULI but when ever we do a camping trip on the ULI it is at 20 psi the entire week.

You can see my ULI in these pictures from one of our trips.

Another board you may consider is the Lahui Kai 11'6" x 29" board.  This is a really nice cruising board.  The 12'6" boards by Lahui Kai are all too thick for a rider of your size but the 11'6" is thinner in the standing area and would work nice.

But really if you have back problems and think loading and unloading will be a problem, get a custom ULI inflatable made.  I have a custom ULI that is 12'6" x 26" x 4" pintail that I love.  If I had one board that would be it.  Go anywhere do anything board, and you do not have to worry about banging it.

Yep I started out on the Bliss and still love that board. I never had any real durability issues and my board looked brand new when I sold it. Only reason I sold it was to get a narrower board. But if I was in the market for a nice cruising board I would seriously consider the Bliss.

When you go look at the Bliss take a home scale and weigh it. I do this with every used board just to make sure they are near what the person says.

Post pictures if you get it. Is it pink or teal?  Nothing like paddling a nice looking board. Have fun out there.

Cheers Jill

Hi,

I would recommend the ULI boards.  They make them right here  in Cali and can get you a custom for no extra cost in about 1 week.  Sometimes they have demos in stock that they offer at a discount.  They are a small company so just give them a call and talk with Meg in the office.  A lot of companies are just concerned with making their boards thicker so that adds stiffness, but the material is so thin for weight savings that the board gets its own wave going.  The ULI boards are made with 2 skins, outer is now thinner than inner to save weight, and the second layer is put on slightly deflated so that when inflated the outer layer helps stiffen up the board.  Also the Kevlar strips on the board and sides really help stiffen the board, with a custom they could increase the width of this kevlar strip.  For lake paddling I really love the 3 small fins so I can get in the weeds and near the shore. If you want a 12'6" x 34" x 5" just ask for that and they will make it. Their phone is 760-639-1844

I am not associated with ULI in any way other than being a happy customer.  At your budget you can easily get one.  What you really want to consider is getting one for both you and your wife.  You will love paddling together.

Cheers, Jill

Gear Talk / Re: 11'6" or 12'6" for light paddler?
« on: June 28, 2015, 07:58:54 AM »
Hi,

I am about her size but probably older (much older), but have no problem at all with a 12'6".  A proper sized 12'6" is actually easier for me to handle than a big wide board like the steamroller.  I really like a board with a sunken deck because it takes volume out of the board.  This is one reason I have never been a fan of the Hobie boards as they feel very corky to me.  I feel like I am paddling 6" above water line.  But if she likes it the Apex will be fine.  The two companies I stick with are Starboard (2013 and 2014) and Infinity.  Both of these have nice sunken decks and work well for smaller riders. I currently ride a 12'6" x 25.5 Allstar and a  12'6" x 25.5 Sprint, and I sure would love to pick up one of thos 12'6" x 24 Allstars.

If she want to go, get her on the narrowest 12'6" board she feels comfortable on right now.  She will get better and want an even narrower board, not just because it is faster but it will be easier for her to track straight.  I find that when you are light weight a big wide board requires a lot of work to control, where a smaller board moves with your weight.  I hope this helps.

Cheers, JIll
