Sad to see PSH closing, the girls that worked there were the best employees of any SUP shop on Oahu.  Always friendly and knowledgeable, they're the ones that helped me when I first started stand up. I wish them and Blane the best in the future.  Got some great deals going on during the closeout and was able to get my brother-in-law a new board and taking him out(first timer) this week.

Nice foot work DJ and it looks like you were getting some good speed on your new glide!

Sorry TEX_SUP, didn't mean to offend your love of NASCAR. What I mean to say is that in SUP if you want the board to move you have to paddle, you are the motor.  I just don't want to see anyone(elite class or open) hindered by a one-design board. We are all different heights, weights and abilities.

If you has a chance to watch this past weekends Stand Up World Series Final at Turtle Bay during the  sprint race you would never see that kind of speed on inflatables. Four guys on three different brand boards rippin it to the finish line with Kai Lenny wining by a nose. What an exciting race!

I like watching NASCAR too but I wouldn't want to see it turned into and IROC series.

And for any America's Cup fans out there, don't be offended either.

As others have said - doesn't making it "fair" with a one design class take all the fun out of racing?
Racing (anything) is supposed to be about who / what is the best.
As long as there are both serious competitions and fun events (elite class AND age group races) there will be a place for everyone.

From talking to Naish about the One Series - a big portion of deciding to do the series is that the boards are inflatable. This way if someone wants to take their holiday to some other part of the world to take in a SUP race - they can easily bring their own board. It is not intended to be an elite level race series - but more of a fun series.
I agree with you and I think your the only one that mentioned the "age " thing. One thing I loved about SUP is that most of the races I've entered have age brackets, which is cool compared to some other sports. Adding more and more rules, just takes the fun out of racing, lets not limit the board shapers from what they do best.  I like seeing how this sport gets faster and faster every year. I don't think we should compare our sport to sailing, NASCAR or any sport where the the machine or craft mean more than the user. A narrow, light and expensive board doesn't mean you'll go fast if you can't stand on it. The paddler is the motor, so if you want to go faster, paddle more strokes per minute, if you want to go faster work on technique to make every stroke count. That's how you make things "fair".
Not trying to PO anyone, this is just my opinion. Aloha

Great job SEA! I don't think enough credit is given to the escort crews, especially good ones like yours.

Demo as many boards as you can from friends and dealers.  IMO if you choose a 14' I like and just got the new 2012 Naish Glide, with the lower rocker and recessed deck it paddles good into the wind and your gonna love going back downwind.  If you decide on a 12'6 I would recommend the Bark Competitor, I have the tuf-lite construction so its a little heavy at just over 30lbs. but very durable and super stable.  It has great glide in flat water with the displacement nose but I also use it in open ocean races with chop and small swells.

Gear Talk / Re: Question for DJ and other Naish Glide experts
« on: March 04, 2012, 12:56:49 AM »
I got my 2012 14' glide this week and took it on a Hawaii Kai downwind today.  The conditions weren't that good with light winds and choppy water, but the board was stable, caught even the small bumps well and I was very impressed with how well it did in cross chop (like DJ said ).  The boards construction is very tough and IMO its a very good board for the price.

SUP General / Re: Is it too much $?

At what point is it too much $?

Does anyone need another T-shirt, flip-flop, hat or for that fact another boring lunch? The price to race is going overboard. The fun parts are the many fun raffles, the exciting courses, and the outstanding friends and competitors. Spending $110 for a six mile race does not cut it. $70 for a four mile race is ridiculous, and the travel to get there just adds to the misery. Sure, limiting the board size, adding a big-guy class, a surfboard class has its merits, but why sooooo much money? OK, I'll take any kind of cheese with my whine, but I thinking the season has ended already, and this one is going to have one less paddler.
I have to agree teamalty, that's too much for a t-shirt and lunch race.  Which race is this that cost so much?  I live on Oahu, and except for The BOP most races cost $30 - $40 bucks.  I like racing because you get to meet other people that love SUP and I like the challenge of the different courses.  Each year more and more people enter the races so you have to wonder where all the money is going?  :(
