Fun read, Bob. Many credits given for the effort and beat-down and that it made you happy! Hope you're feeling better today.

Thanks for taking the time to show us the "other side" of those endlessly tiresome "I caught 48 out of 50 overhead bombs and heroically ripped n' shredded the life out of every last one riding my 100 liter 6'2" custom carbon micro-mini O what a great Man I am....." posts.

Just bumping this thread up....

Got an hour of clean waist high at my local (maine) break this AM until the onshores kicked in. Nice to be on the water again.

I'll be in SoCal in two weeks, will be ready to surf. Hope some of you will be around and can point me in the right direction.

Thanks for all the advice.

I lived and worked in LA in the late 90's and have only been back once a few years ago since (for work) and even though I know my way around clearly much has changed since then.

Yes, it will indeed be an adjustment to have to deal with location restrictions, crowds, attitudes and localism though I'm generally pretty easygoing on the water (don't feel like I need a piece of every set wave that comes through) am not a beginner and can "control my board" so hopefully I'll be able to cope well enough.

With regards to boards, I'm leaning towards bringing my own but am very serious about looking specifically for a thinned-out/lower volume performance longboard style in the 10' range while I'm out there.

Will certainly give you all a head's up closer to the date and hopefully can meet up with a few of you.

Hey Bill, Thanks for the advice!

Yes, I've been looking for a new longboard style sup for a while. I will be contacting Dave Daum and will drop in on Wardog in SB to see what he's got as well.

Am used to driving distances and dealing w/traffic. Will be working @ the Getty (in Westwood).

I'll be coming from Maine to work on a job in LA mid-August into September and (of course) the first thing on my mind is surfing....

Going back and forth on whether I should take a sup with me, rent one while I'm out there as needed, get a craigslist board OR just use this trip as a good reason to buy a new one and have it shipped back home end of trip.

And I'm very hopeful I can meet up with a few of you while I'm out there. I'll have weekends and early AM/PM free as far as I can tell.

Oh yes, I am also looking for clean and quiet (mid-priced) accommodations close to surf opportunities.

Thanks in advance for any and all advice!

Classifieds / Re: 9'5" Sunova Speed $1450.00

Hey LW, sounds as if you did the same thing I did and went with the Speeed "one size too big"?!

I was trying to slot the 9'2" Speeed into a performance longboard shape. Even though I had a nice demo on the 8'10" I went with the 9'2" instead figuring I'd benefit from the additional width and length in my typical "less than perfect conditions" and surprisingly found it has way too much volume and length for me (@ 205 lbs 6'4") to get the most out of it. The 9'2" is much closer to the 9'5" than it is to the 8'10".

I do like and believe in this design, and the Sunova build is excellent. I'm thinking of swapping it out for an 8'10". If you like the shape you should try an 8'10" in spite of the 29" width.

Between those step rails and that concave deck there's a lot going on up there. Clearly Bert feels that there needs to be volume out near the rails on this design.

Why not just do a flat deck out to the rails and work in the volume throughout conventionally? I'd imagine that the board with those dims @ 32" wide would still offer plenty of stability without all the bumps n' ridge lines on the deck.

I opted for a stock Speeed after initially considering a custom, mainly b/c of that domed deck, shaky initial stability and my wish to shave off a few liters of what I felt was excess volume. After a couple of fun demos on the Speeed as designed, I ordered a stock 9'2" which is working out fine but I digress....

All that being said Wetstuff, It's a very interesting and nice looking board....very much looking forward to hearing how it works for you.

Maybe consider a Deep or Gulliver custom (Tomo) shape from AUS or contact Tino from Sunova to discuss a custom?

Shipping expense is no big deal from there as you make up the cash difference in a favorable exchange rate.

SUP General / Re: Another check up another melanoma

Glad to hear you got it quickly, DC. I understand the seeds for melanoma were probably sewn years ago but perhaps you should consider embracing your neoprene and spending more time up North  ;) ;D

Thanks for sharing your story and raising awareness here in our most vulnerable community.

Thanks to Lemmy for making or contributing to some of the greatest rock songs ever written. Like Hawkwind's "Silver Machine"
