Wow... talk about
"Life is what happens, when you are making other plans"

Everyday from here on out is a bonus to be enjoyed....use them well :D
I do enjoy life and play hard as everyone should. Another of my favorite quotes." What doesn't kill you makes you stronger", or words to that effect. I have a belt PFD and didn't want to wear it. I don't know if I would have deployed it anyway.
I WILL ALWAYS KEEP A LEASH ON. I have no doubt it saved my life.

Wow....you were lucky.  Good thing you were in such good condition, otherwise the story might have had a different ending.
Any known cause for the drop in heartrate? The toxins?
Dr. said the electrical connection between the upper and lower parts of the heart were too slow causing a slow down in heart beat.

Came to CA. for the month from Texas and went to Cardiff for a session. I had been stung by something in New Mexico and my rt. thumb was the size of a sausage. I went to the restroom b4 going out and felt weak and dizzy. I thought it was because of toxin (from bite or sting) in my system. Came off a wave and went down, caught my leash, luckily,  and knew something was wrong. I was weak, out of breath and a little dis-oriented. Got to shore and couldn't carry my board up the beach. My buddy, Pat carried it up for me. Stayed in a chair for a couple of hours and decided I'd go out again. Immediately when I started paddling to get a wave, I was out of breath, weak and dis-oriented again. Got to shore and Pat carried my board up again. Sat on the beach for a couple of hours STILL DENYING what could be wrong. Told my wife I was going to paddle the lagoon. I started following her around the shore. I got 50 foot and she looked back at me and I shook my head. I couldn't go on.  I'm 68, 185 lbs. low cholesterol, pickleball 3 hrs. a day. Paddle 20 + mi. a week. etc, etc. etc.  I had to get a pacemaker because my heart rate was dropping to 30 BPM when I was increasing my energy level. The LORD was watching out for me. IF I hadn't been using my leash, I would have drowned. DR. Gimm in Laguna Hills = great Cardiologist AND he is a SUPer. 2 weeks and I'm paddling again.

We do agree. If you do your best "that is all you or anyone can ask of you".
Buddy Ebsen was a good catamaran sailor his quote was " there are two types of catamaran sailors in a race. Good ones and bad ones. The bad ones are ahead of you and you try to make them into good ones".

Great book.

In the summer of '68 Beverly Hillbilly and sailing aficionado Buddy Ebsen skippered his diminutive 35-foot catamaran, the Polynesian Concept (fondly, Polycon), in the third biennial Multihull Transpacific Yacht Race from L.A. to Honolulu, ""one of the world's toughest ocean races."" At the outset Ebsen worries, ""Could I do it? Could I sail this tiny bundle of sticks to victory against such odds? Me, an actor?"" Indeed he could and did, beating seven other entries on corrected time. Along the way Ebsen logs about 2500 miles, a few aphorisms (""every man lights off the fires of his own hell""), two mia tais a day (what else?), occasional challenges to his ""command"" position by an expert crew (up or down the spinnaker?) as well as retrospects on the building and launching of the little ""cat,"" but oddly there is a dearth of giggles: ""The things that people find to laugh at on a small yacht which has been en route for five or six days with seven people aboard might not produce laughter anywhere else."" Breezy, not gusty.

Take a look at your tagline 44. I know, I know, "second place is the first loser".  I race cars to win, but I race SUPs to participate and compete at whatever level my 66 year old body permits on that day. I'm not going to win, but I'm gonna race.
But at the end of the race, you can say you did your best. You didn't start a race with the thought that there was "no way" you could win, did you? I have never entered anything where I had in my mind that I had "given up" before the race started. I'm 69 and love to compete in windsurfing and anything actually.
I just finished 6th out of 25 (TUSC) 4 miles, toughest race I've ever been in 20-25 MPH winds and 2-3 ft. chop. No age classes.  A lot of people dropped out after the first lap. My attitude was from the start to finish 1st. Didn't work out that way but I can say "I left nothing on the course." I know you guys race in the toughest races in the world, with the best in the world, but I can't understand entering "to lose". My .02 Type A, for sure.

I'd think most 'racers' are there to have fun, and realize they don't have much chance of winning.  (If the guy next to me is on a $4,000 board, I'm not going to sweat it too much.)
[/quote]

Why would someone enter a race they thought they had "no chance of winning"? With that attitude you've lost before you start the race. I'm there to win or not at all. My .02

I have a 2010 Starboard Silver Blend which is the windsurf option. I'm selling it and the OAM bag for $1000.00 both garaged and like new.
I also am a windsurfer and have about 8 boards, 6 masts, 3 booms and 10-12 sails.  I NOW have 6 SUPs . Two race, 2 surf style and 2 ISUPs.

Not trying to hijack this thread but all this rack talk got me thinking... I have a Thule rack on my Escape, 70" wide bars.  I have 4 Dakine pads, each is about 28" wide.  I have 2 side by side on each bar.  I also have a rope system tied off that I leave on the racks.  The ropes lay taught against the pads when not in use.  Am I killing my gas mileage by leaving the pads and ropes on or is it such a small difference that I shouldn't worry?  I feel the wind move the car on windy days and sometimes it seems slower to accelerate...am I crazy?

The amount the pads contribute to lower gas mileage is probably negligible compared to what the racks by themselves are causing is my guess.  Only way to find out is to track your mileage with and without.

I know having racks on my Prius kills the mileage.  Been thinking about removing them and using soft racks when needed.

We are losing about 5 MPG on our 2013 Honda Odyssey by leaving the Yakima Rail Grab W\66" bars on it. I was very surprised. I had been watching the mileage because it is a new car and noticed the difference.

Gear Talk / Board covers, adequate protection
« on: April 03, 2013, 09:30:19 AM »
We're planning some trips to FL and CA. this year. We will have a carbon MHL and Bark on top of our Honda Odyssey W\ Rail Grab. I have an OAM bag for the MHL but not for the Bark 12'6". After reading some info about losing a board on the freeway, I'm concerned about using a board bag. I do use two SS inserted tie down straps. Are the board covers such as Victory adequate to keep the carbon reaction to heat from warping, or should I just get another OAM day bag?

Anyone ever try this? I have a paddle grip made out of it.

It's not just you. I have just emailed them to find out the meaning of color/graphics. There is a VGT Surf Commercial on Youtube that they say the riders have no wax on their boards just the VGT traction pads
