The Shape Shack / Repairing clear finished carbon SIC sup
« on: August 03, 2020, 07:13:26 PM »
Hey Friends,

I'm looking for advice here on repairing my 14' SIC Bullet. It's a custom board that was made as the prototype for the original V2 later produced in Taiwan. It has a number of dings taped up, but got a bigger one recently that deserves a more robust repair. I've done fiberglass repairs before and painted over them. On this board though the finish is clear, see attached photos. I'm seeking to source carbon fiber mat from Gorge Performance. I'd like to maintain the same or similar clear finish if not too difficult.

My questions:
1) What is the appropriate clear epoxy to use?
2) What is the appropriate finish to apply over the epoxied carbon?
3) Does the board being "clear" suffer from UV degradation? The ding in the photo was from a minor fall in the water and my knee hit the rail (pretty light) and caused that. No scrape or bruise on my knee. Seemed to me as if the board had become more fragile possibly due to years of wear and tear from use I suppose.

Thanks for any help or advice.

Sorry for delayed response here.

I've decided that I'd like to sell the whole paddle (blade, shaft, and handle) for $250. The paddle measures 79" from top of handle to bottom of blade. Shaft is 100 flex. Handle is a palm grip.

I'm in Hood River and Tacoma areas but travelling a bit too this summer, would prefer not to ship but would consider it. Thanks!

I have a Ke Nalu Mana 90 blade that I might want to get rid of. This post is a feeler to see if anyone might be interested. I'd trade for a Mana 82, or possibly sell it to help buy a Mana 82.

The blade was bought new in August 2017 and is in great condition.

I have done this with others. We have camped off our SUPs for 10 nights in the San Juans. 5 nights consecutive.

Wind is the biggest factor that can slow your pace.

I usually plan 4 hour stretches of paddle time to best use currents. In San Juans the currents are less intuitive with lots of eddies and swirls.

We can usually go 18-20 miles in 4.5 hours with our overnight gear and up to 8-10 liters of water when winds are not present and currents are not against. If windy, and especially headwinds, pace will slow dramatically.

Get the WWTA book (join them or donate to them, or find online version) that has all the paddle camps detailed as well which have water and which don't.

Send me a PM if you want to connect about more specifics.

Thanks everyone for the comments and ideas.

PonoBill: I think we may have met last summer, Rod introduced me to you down at the park, I recall we were loading up. But I'll look forward to seeing you again.

Aloha Ananda,
Welcome to the forum...

Check out the Thule Hullivator...the best engineered solution to this problem...

Thanks for welcome. I'm a longer time lurker here. We have four 14-ft boards. Paddle mostly in Puget Sound (live on the water) but also love the downwinders in Hood River.

Also, thanks for the great photos and info. I've heard good things about that Hullivator. I forgot to mention that the top of the Promaster will only clear the entrance to my garage door by about 5 inches and so a lower profile custom rack (less than 5" tall) has that benefit for me. Also, that Hullivator add-on, appears that it must be connected to a separate roof rack already in place. So I get back to my original ladder question...side, back or detached and moveable? I suppose each has pros and cons to consider but wanted to hear from experience if possible.

Are you thinking of roof loading for everyday use or just long trips? The Thule looks nice but not sure I want to know the price.

Long trips for sure. Everyday, not sure. For shuttles boards can go inside. I rode in my buddy's 144" wheel base sprinter with 5 people and 5 14-ft boards all squeezed inside.

We are about to become owners of a 159" wheelbase (not extended) Ram Promaster high roof cargo van (similar to Sprinter or Ford Transit high roof cargo van). The roof is 99" above ground.

I know the Sprinter can fit 14-ft long SUP inside with nose portion in the front cab area, and I assume the Promaster will be similar. However, it would be nice to also have ability to load, unload and strap 14-ft SUPs (two of them at least) up on roof rack on the top of the van. I'm contemplating design of a custom rack and ladder set up. The rack set up would be designed in a manner to support my weight (160 lb) and not dent or deform the thin panel roof.

My questions to the forum are these, for anyone who may have attempted similar:

1) For SUP loading and unloading, is a moveable extension ladder "better" or easier than a fixed ladder either on the side or back?
2) For SUP loading unloading, Is a fixed ladder better on the side or back?
3) Anyone general advice or opinions to share for what makes a good design to load and unload 14-ft SUPs from a high roof van?

Thanks in advance!
