the only reason elliptical wings were efficient is because of the era of when they were used ... back then carbon fiber was a dream

your foil is powered by the elements and a bit of muscle power :-) no space for merlin engines , id look more to soaring type birds/aircraft for inspiration

you cant beat high aspect in terms of efficiency , and thats what makes a foil perform or not

changing the incidence angle of the foil shifts the CG of the foil , when your CG is in front of your lift you have a stable foil but may have to have a heavy front leg to keep the nose down

and visa versa ....

if you have too much back foot pressure then your become unstable and the foil will feel squirrely and a difficult foil to ride

The Signature Albatross Downwind foils have a very narrow chord...... but I found it has a pretty small seeet spot balance wise.
This foil has a very small wingtip so it’s exactly as Piros said that it has a small sweet spot because there’s not a lot of lift out on the wingtip.

not quite , this foil is a race foil and thats why it has a small sweet spot , in the horizontal position the wing is sensitive (without banking), just about any high performance machine is tuned and becomes sensitive .... climb onto a small high performance board and it feels sensitive

The close coupled front and rear wing with very short chord's on both wings makes it sensitive however it also make highly efficient , a bigger (longer chord) rear stab will tame the beast at a cost of drag

i presume you mean the double concave on the bottom of the wing ? the MFC also has it

not recommended for pump foils , it does work okay but you get lateral flow which ends up in vortexs off the tips which is wasted energy, but the positive side is a foil that has a very locked in feel (but isnt always wanted on a wave as it feels like its on rails)

imo ofcourse ;-)

Nice !!

Did you do a build thread on your Cnc on the zone ? It looks familiar ?
Is that eps or xps you using ?

Haha now that's a wierd coincidence , I live in Jbay :-)

But yea , IMO that's the perfect platform to start developing either a DW or surf kayak for foiling

Awesome thread

If I may add my 2c :-)

I'd recommend keeping the wing flat with no dihedral , firstly as it's a more stable platform and secondly it's much easier to keep your profile shape consistent along the span

Id also use a profile with a small amount of camber this is great for low speed
A profile with about 13% max thickness will be great

Foil SUP / Re: What size boards are people foiling in the surf?

and ... I just don't see this as being all that fun.

Foiling isn't for everyone , but it seems like the guys who get into it absolutely love it. I come from a kite foiling background and to me surfing is a bit too slow ... Sitting waiting for a set and then missing the wave , baa

Here in Jeffrey's bay surfing is huge ! They hold the billabong surf competition here ... The only reason I'm getting into sup/surf foiling is for when the wind is poor :-)
My surf foil moulds arrive this week !

I've just ordered a blank at 7'8" 130l , its my first foil Sup and I hope it's not too small :-/ I'm 97 pies

Foil position is hugely dependant on foil and board shape
Generally your back foot tends to sit on top of the mast on most foils
So where you stand on the board in surf position , move the box 50mm forwards IMO

The Shape Shack / Fabric on the bias
« on: April 03, 2017, 04:00:12 AM »
Hey all

I never read of layups where one layer is on the bias

With both or more fabrics layed 0-90 surely there is extra weight for hoop strength that isn't required ?

Ciao
