SUP General / Re: Home Insurance for SUP gear

Thanks for all the replies but I'm not sure what you mean by adding a rider?

I'm in England so may just be our insurance companies being difficult and not very bespoke.

When I spoke to them, I asked if they had anything to cover it but nothing was offered

I thought it was something worth raising to the UK crowd so they don't get stung like my dad did.

Cheers

SUP General / Home Insurance for SUP gear
« on: September 12, 2019, 06:24:18 AM »
Hi all,

My dad's garage was recently burgled and they stole his paddle and board among other things. He tried to claim for these on his home insurance but was told that watersports equipment like surfboards, windsurfers, SUP's and boats were not normally covered.

I have spoken to my insurer as well and they do not cover them either allthough they do cover surfboards which is weird!!

I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on insurance for my gear at home please? I've tried to google it and all it comes up with is watersports travel insurance.

Thanks in advance
James

No, they are all fine boards that each have their pros and cons, like any other board. None of them is likely to be a mistake. In time your needs will evolve and you will start to develop preferences for particular sizes and designs. This is a process we all go through. But many of us have not started out on boards are respectable as these (and which should have relatively decent resale value). So you are making a good start.

Resale value, in the UK at least, is pretty poor IME.

A £1400 larger board may be worth 50% on resale. Hard to value as the bigger boards are more desirable of course- try selling a 8' 90L sup after a year or two- £1500 drops down to £400-500.

I would always buy second hand if I could- knowing after 6 months I may lose £100-200 in depreciation.

Not to worry, I will only be able to afford second hand plus as it'll be a steep learning curve I might give it the odd bump as I fall off :-)

haha not so sure about Nazere!!

When I say I'm comfortable on my 30 wide Naish One I mean comfy when stood and racing not so much with the moving my feet, surf stance or pivot turn :-/ I'm working on it but not there yet!

Thank you everyone for the advice, it has really helped narrow the search down to the following:

8'6" - 9'6" 140l-165l 30-33 wide

I've been looking at the main brands we have in the UK and have come up with a list that approx. meet this spec -

Naish Mana 9'5'
Naish Quest 9'6'
Starboard Widepoint 8'10 and 9'5'
Starboard Hypernut 9'0' and 9'6
Fanatic Allwave 8'9 to 9'4'
JP Fusion 9'2' and 9'8'

Any of these to really avoid?

Thank you all for your really helpful and detailed replies. It's really given me some good ideas of what to look for.

Just to add some more background in case it helps… I am 34yo and reasonably fit/able.
I have been SUPing for 5 or so years now on all round boards to start with then moved onto some N1SCO racing on the Naish One. Through this I’ve become quite comfortable on 30” wide. I have not surfed shortboards and have only tried with my 10’6 inflatable SUP about 4 or 5 times. On my latest outing last week I actually caught my first 4 waves which really motivated me!

I would really like to have a board that challenges me to improve as that is what I have enjoyed with the Naish One. I think I’d like to try a board that is shorter than my inflatable to give me a different experience so think the 9’6 and under range with 145-165 in volume. I spoke to a guy that has a shop over the weekend and he suggested the same kind of volume. He suggested the Starboard Widepoint, JP Fusion, Naish Mana and Quest all 9’5 and the BIC Performer 9’1

Thanks again for the advice!

Thank you for the advice JimK.

Funnily enough one of my friends has a 9'4 AllWave Pure that he offered to let me try so will definitely take him up on that.

Gear Talk / Beginner Surf SUP Board Help

Hi all,

I have just started trying my hand at SUP Surfing using my 10'4 RRD inflatable and am after some advice on a first hard board?

I am wondering what kind of volume I need to be looking at? I am 5'11 and around 90kg/200lbs

I live in the south east of England where we don't get massive swell and it can often be quite mushy.

Any advice on size, volume and design would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
James

Going blue this year, sounds like it was a good choice!

I tried some all stars at bray lake recently, found them a bit tippy for me but I'm not quite at your level :-) Haven't managed to try the maliko yet!

What races are on your list for next year? I really want to get back into it and be a bit more competitive if I can lol

If you want a really stable platform and a board that can handle a bit of mess I can honestly say the maliko was the most stable 26 inch wide board I'd ever used. I dropped the fin size down in the end to get more speed out of it as stability was never an issue.

I'm having to wrap my SUP season around my bike races and some quadrathlon so I'll likely race through the winter (possibly doing the odd race up where you are) and then I'll aim for a top result at Head of the Dart in April. Thats the biggest event in the UK and is a defacto national distance champs in my view as everyone is there. After that I'll still be paddling but my race season emphasis will shift to my other sports until August.

Cheers for advice, def need to demo one somewhere. Don't think Alex has any more demo days planned on website. I really want a hard board but keep talking myself in/out of it as I'm not sure I'd race in the 14ft class as I'd get crushed lol I think I'd choose to race the N1SCO not that I'm in the lead pack there either :-)

Wow quite a busy year for you then?! The Head of the Dart is on my list as ones I want to do eventually along with the round Hayling Island one. I think I might try to do the UK SUP races as well this year in the N1SCO fleet

Come and race at Brays winter series. It's a great race series with a broad range of paddler ability and would let you try tactics and build confidence. Plenty of hard boards to try. Nisco is good but it's a very different style of racing to hardboard stuff.

I'm tempted... I'll look into the details and dates.

Tactics... what are those? I just paddle my butt off and come last lol

Do you think they'd let me race on one of their hire boards?

Training, Diet, and Fitness / Re: Yoga for Back Pain / Strength
« on: May 19, 2017, 01:00:44 AM »
Two things helped resolve my lower back pain:
  • Getting in the habit of tightening my abdominal muscles anytime I bent forward.
  • Deadlifts

I used to occasionally tweak my lower back, and it would get really stiff and sore for a week or so each time, limiting my mobility and activity. Stretching or chiropractic adjustments would help accelerate recovery each time, but weren't preventing recurrence when it was happening quite frequently for a year or so, when doing something as simple as bending forward to tie my shoes or put on my pants.

I think strengthening my back muscles with the deadlifts helped make them less susceptible to injury under heavy exertion, but learning to reflexively clench my core muscles during any forward bending motion probably did more to prevent the stupid shoe tying back injuries!  :)

Thanks for the reply, I do try to "engage the core" especially when lifting anything heavy but definitely need to get into the practice of doing it all the time.

I've not tried deadlifts before so will have to give that a try... what kind of weight should I use to start with?

Thank you all very much for your replies.

Thank you for sharing your experiences and knowledge with me... sounds like I really need to give this a go!

Thanks for the info on acupuncture hbsteve - the guy that talked to me about yoga said he could do acupuncture if I ever needed it as he works in sports massage but I was a bit sceptical to be honest especially as we were at a lake at the time and he said he had some in his van!! :-)

Training, Diet, and Fitness / Yoga for Back Pain / Strength
« on: May 16, 2017, 01:32:47 AM »
Hi all,

I have long suffered with back issues and generally keep it "under control" with trips to the osteopath but it's been suggested to me by a fellow SUPer that I should try Yoga. He also said that I have tight hamstrings which impacts my lower back as well.

Does anyone have any good advice for me on how to get started and if it can really help?

Is it worth trying it at home before paying out for a class? Any particularly good moves to do for the back?

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the replies PonoBill, clinto and burchas... only recently got a new phone and not sure I can afford the iphone 7 :-)

I'll have a look into the Barnacle speaker too

I also saw a Ultimate Ears Boom 2 speaker in a shop on the weekend which looked pretty good... the sound quality was amazing!
