How do you even think about going into the water when you can't swim?

Leash snaps sometimes and it is a far swim back to the shore.

SUP General / Pros and Cons of each type of water craft, IMO.
« on: July 04, 2016, 06:17:40 AM »
I'll start with a SUP.

SUP
Pros: Easy to watch the set coming, easy to spot the take off zone, much easier to turn than a longboard. Somewhat less tiring/exhausting.
Cons: Nightmare to get caught inside, heaviest equipment out of all surf boards, once your leg gets tired you are useless.

Longboard
Pros: Catches very mushy and small wave, very stable while pop up, paddle like a champ. Least tiring/exhausting. Can be surfed all day.
Cons: Hard to maneuver once on the wave, hard to swing it around and go, hard to make late and pitchy take off.

Shortboard
Pros: Very easy to maneuver on the wave, duckdiveable, light, simple, super easy to swing it around, easy late take off.
Cons: Little less stable while poping up, requires the waves to have some size, most tiring/exhausting.

I think the easiest surfboard is whatever you spend the most time on. I think it is a complete myth that one type of surfing is easier or certain types are harder than the other.

Man, Doheny, what a place.

Full of people, felt like one of the most commercialized beach I've been to in years.

I could only stand up surf for two hour since my sea legs where nowhere to be found. I had a very difficult time SUP surfing. I've gotten so used to shortboard that I've wasted at least three, four waves trying to bottom turn by leaning only, and ended up going face first.

Did longboarding for the first time as well. That stuff isn't easy at all. I think it is a complete myth that beginners learn on a longboard. I think the beginners should start out on a funboard. It is not natural to walk back to turn. It is more natural for the people to lean to turn, and funboard will allow the beginners to do so.

anyways, over 6 hours of surfing, got my 15 dollar worth out from the parking pass. Good times.

Thanks for your insight.

I figured between 9 and 10 am would be the time when the morning surf crew leaves, and we will be able to find parking.

Shade and trees around that picnic table area? or should I bring EZ up?

I switch from 8'4" x 32 to 6'2" x 19.

First day of switch is horrible and I tend to regret doing SUPing as it kinda ruins half of the day.

I haven't been on a SUP over a year now. I'm about to get on it this weekend.  :-[ :-[ :-[

SoCal / Doheny locals I need help !!!

Hey guys,

I'm trying to figure out if it is easy or at least doable to find a parking spot at Doheny between 9-10 AM on coming Sunday. Bunch of non-surfing friends wants to have BBQ and beach day and I sucker them into going to Doheny. We are looking at about 5 separate cars.

If you see really tall dude with a yellow Simsup that is me. I haven't surf Doheny and haven't been on a SUP for over a year now. I'll probably be falling all over the place.

backwards or not, the guy is winning.

He should have no problem cruising around at any line up.

SUP General / Re: How do you handle proners blocking you?
« on: April 26, 2016, 06:28:30 PM »
There is this guy at one of my favorite breaks that paddles right in front of me as I'm going for a wave and then stops.  It's obvious that he is trying to mess me up, happens too many times to be an accident.  He does a lot of other annoying things and I just let them go, but the blocking is driving me nuts.  I am a very courteous SUP surfer and never hog, try to stay out of the way of others, but I do take my equal share of the waves.  I generally let him win and try to stay away from him by 50 yards or so, except when it's only breaking at the main takeoff spot, then I get in with him but only take an equal share with everyone else.   No matter how courteous I try to be, the guy behaves the same.

What would you do with this guy?

I might head down there just to fuck with him. The whale beached at Lowers and I'm kinda in a shitty mood knowing that I won't be able to go anywhere near Lowers for a while.

This is so retarded. The douchbag is acting like he is at some premier surf break, no need to cause the stress over 2-3 foot wave. If anyone is "local" that is you Zoo. Let him know the fact that the guy drove over there in a car, and you live there. (I'm just guessing that the guy drove over)

If you guys wanna surf Lowers, this is it. Sounds like the whale aren't going to be move for a while. They are thinking about cutting it to pieces and move them out somewhere inland.

I've tried my buddies one wheel, and the learning curve seemed fairly steep. I thought it was gonna be super easy but not at all.

I've also tried this one. Equally as hard. They both go about the equal speed, airwheel seemed more agile, being able to turn in tight spots.

and we also have Lunada bay where no one surfs but the gang.

Lunada Bay, that's a proper SUP wave in the winter.

SUP General / Re: How Fast is Your Board?
« on: January 22, 2016, 08:38:43 PM »
My friend has a Ripcurl GPS watch and he says that the speed really depends on the type of the wave not the board.

You might "feel" faster using certain boards due to the bottom shape/fin set up/ect but the real speed of the board is determined by the wave.

I don't have any fancy GPS stuff, so I'll take his word for it.

Sunova SUP / Re: Volume of Flow 8'7
« on: January 19, 2016, 10:24:59 PM »
I've got a question for the Sunova.

How do you guys measure its volume? Do you put sample block of foam in the water and see how much it pushes out and figure out from there? I'm sure that you guys aren't submerging the whole board in a gigantic tub.
