@Caribsurf - thanks, thats close to Space Center, may check that out too

@PonoBill - Walter's intentions were always not to get caught.

@lisabearsitall - Great idea, I've never jumped. May give it a go.

Should be safe this time of year driving down without reservations? May have to play it by ear here and there.

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Looking for FL east coast native advice
« on: April 06, 2017, 04:31:27 PM »

If you had to plan a 5 day surf trip down the east coast, how'd you do it?

Daddy here is getting the rare opportunity to get away by himself for a week.

My idea is to plan a little two or three stop surf trip down the east coast, and check out any cool towns/cities. I'll be bringing my 6'8 shorty and 8x30 assassin.

So far, I have only visited Jacksonville and St. Augustine. But I'm open to anything. Surf camps, yoga, culture, shows, night life. Anything that won't get me arrested.

Thanks!

Awesome Bill thank you. And yes, that it's just cracked part way.

So I swapped my Maliko blade for the 85 Konihi (hot glue). During that process the foam expanded and it cracked (the Maliko). The crack is 1/8" x 2" on opposing sides. I can push the plug about half way before I feel it may require too much force. Is there a standard way to repair? I have a vice I could put it in overnight. Or spade/drill bits to dig out the foam if needed.

Started using hot glue this spring and had one of my handles slowly start twisting loose. Probably due to the facts that I used the clear stuff from lowes and left it out in the heat frequently. The paddle was still useable, re-glued it after the race, no sweat. Going to get the high strength stuff and try fileing the flats like Bill stated. Great tips  thanks.

Right on! But I still like the coconut tree stat. Some more good ones: Vending Machines, Hot Tap Water, Autoerotic Asphyxiation, Champagne Corks

Gear Talk / what is your race fin quiver looking like after this year?
« on: September 07, 2015, 08:47:53 AM »
This is more a less a poll. I raced with one fin all year, and think I could benefit from having a couple options next year. I'm also moving to a narrower board (27 to 25). So I am curious:

How much do you weigh? What is your paddle technique skill level? What fins do you use and how did they perform?

Example for my board:
Board Dimensions: 14x25.5
Weight: 185lbs / 85kg
Skill (technique / balance): Intermediate
Flat Water Fin: ??
Open Ocean Fin: ??
BOP Style Fin: ??
Jousting Fin: ??
Stand Up BBQ'n Fin: ??

Thanks!

I had an axe paddle, snapped on the shoulder like a cracker just paddling normally. May have dinged it prior.

I tried a 14x25.5 today briefly which was 239L, probably weighed 26-28 lbs, epoxy / vector. Had a square tail, some extra volume in the nose with slight displacement hull underneath. No cockpit but a flat recessed deck which I actually really liked. I managed just fine in calm waters and some boat wake. I can imagine that I would do ok in rougher waters, but there will be another learning curve to tackle - but that is what I'm wanting.

I was questioning the glide however. This may only be something I can verify over a 3 mile run. It may have been in my head because of the lower volume, but I felt it wasn't gliding as well as my 27" which is very similar shape and only 15L more. Last year I remember trying a 14x24 that was about 240L and felt like one pull would rocket me 100 yards, but it was pure flat water board. I think I'm starting to 'feel' the give and take with the shape and volume. Or maybe trying a board should be taking it 3 miles with a gps, like the owner recommended.

I can comment since with my camelbak on board and pfd I am 185- 190 lbs.
I have a 2013 14x25 starboard ace and a 2014 14x 25.5 Starboard Allstar. I am an experienced paddler and SUP racer.

The allstar is faster overall and seems to be a better all conditions board, especially for boat wake and side chop. it's easy to get back on if you fall out, but most importantly it's significantly more stable than the Ace and does not roll and flip over with the side chop and boat wake.

The volume on the ace is 299 L, The allstar is closer to the 260s or lower I believe. The allstar is 6 pounds lighter also.

I don't know if volume is a big factor in stability compared with other factors such as board width and shape.

I think you would be comfortable on at least a 25" board. Best to try before buying because I have tried some really tippy 24" boards and 23" boards.

Thanks, great insight since I've always wanted to try the Allstar. The 2015 14x25 is listed at 269L, maybe the 2014 is similar.

I am still curious if any riders my weight or heavier have found narrower high volume boards to be surprisingly stable.

Gear Talk / At 185 lbs, how narrow can I go on a 14?
« on: August 27, 2015, 06:34:13 PM »
So my current race board is a 14x27 around 250L. It's stable. I'm comfortable on it. Buoy turns, surfing, no problem. I've won one and placed in a hand full of the recreational 3 mile races, and one race I even lead the first mile with the 'elite' guys before I started gassing.

At a recent event I saw a guy on a custom carbon and asked to try it, I knew it was narrower than mine. It was a bit tippy, but I paddled out in some light chop, made a wobbly buoy turn, and paddled back. Come to find out, it was 23! But thick, at 270L. The fin was comparable if not smaller to mine.

I could see myself easily doing a 3 mile in flat conditions with it, which made me wonder if I drop down, what would be I be comfortable with in some more serious conditions? 26? 25? 24? Does that extra volume help? I gotten advice on here that people my weight (185lbs) should have around or at least 270L. I tried a 14x24 @ 250L and it was very unstable for me. Maybe I'm ready for a 14x25 with some more volume. Too bad there are no boards around here like that I can try. My next purchase may be on faith.
