FYI, upstream on the the Columbia, the city of Richland owns two parks which cover about 5-6 miles of river front. The bathrooms are closed, the trash cans are overflowing, but people have been paddling here every nice weather day since the pandemic started. Same thing with Columbia park in Kennewick.

This is to Pono, I understand statistics a little, and I think that you could spend every day in the water in Hawaii and Oregon and not get hit. However, the east coast of the U.S. is different. The locals know there are bull sharks in the water and they generally do not wade in very deep. I think if you spent every day swimming for an hour outside of the surf zone in the Carolinas or Georgia you would not last long.

I think if you are ok with that, there is not much left to be afraid of.

Can't help but say something here. Mobile homes, imo, are a bad choice unless you own the land. Land leases will go up every year. Not good if you are on a fixed income. What if they raise the rent so high you can't afford it- you have to move your house! I have fond memories of North County, my daughters were born there in 1991 and 1997. I enjoy going back there for vacations occasionally but no way in hell I would want to live there now. Sorry for the pessimistic opinion but I would choose someplace way cheaper.

As stated by RideTheGlide- "Government is not nearly as oppressive as the overlords of unregulated capitalism."
Victims of Hitler, Stalin, Chairman Mao, Pol Pot, and other similar government leaders would disagree.

Then you have hospitals gouging Medicare because it is obviously very easy. I saw the bills when my dad had cancer and eventually died after a couple of years treatment. Recently saw the bills when my mom fell and broke both arms. F'ing ridiculous. Hospitals charging too much, Medicare paying too much.

Pono, did not know about the 80% rule but I think that insurance has been the main reason why medical costs are so high. It is easy for hospitals to overcharge when the patient does not feel the direct pain of that. All I know is that I (and my employers) have been paying health insurance my whole life and I am 58 and that money has been completely wasted. Luckily, I have only had to use it a few times for my kids for strep throat and stuff like that. I would rather pay reasonable doctor's fees and have them put me on a payment plan if I couldn't pay cash or credit. Maybe have insurance for catastrophic expenses. I would retire right now if it were not for the health care factor, but will probably have to work until I am 65 for medicare. It really sucks.

The total revenue of health insurance companies in the U.S. was about $1 trillion in 2018. The budget for Medicare was a little less than $600 billion in 2018. Think about that for a minute. We could probably afford universal health care if we got rid of the middleman.
As for the federal deficit, it really isn't real money and everyone knows it. With the fractional reserve system, the banks create money and loan it out to be paid back with real money, as long as they have 10% of the money they create in reserves. Some day the whole game will blow up- what happens then is anybody's guess. More taxes for anybody is not the answer to that problem.

SAN DIEGO'S RECORD TEMPERATURES
Two buoys off the coast of San Diego last week recorded what researchers believe could be the highest temperature ever measured in California waters.
A sea-surface temperature of 81.3 degrees was logged Thursday by both the Torrey Pines buoy (7.3 miles offshore) and the neighboring Scripps Nearshore buoy (.7 miles from the coast).
The buoys are two of 25 managed by Scripps Institution of Oceanography in California.

I find it interesting that so many people on the internet are celebrating the death of this hunter, but nobody really seems to be mourning the death of the cow elephant. Did she leave behind a calf? Was she pregnant? None of the articles that I have read have any answers to those questions.
I find it strange that this hunting party unwittingly stumbled into a herd of cow elephants. How does that happen? The guy that died was not even hunting elephants that day.
I think the main thing that this story exposes is that probably 90% of people have no concept of how wildlife management works. Sometimes, in certain areas, some animal species get overpopulated. A number of them have to be culled. So why is it bad that some rich American spends $20,000 to get a trophy? It would have been killed anyway, right? At least someone gets to decide exactly which animal gets killed. IDK, I don't know enough about the issues in Africa to have an educated opinion but I am sorry that the guy died and I feel bad for his family.

If you are going to DC, take a side trip down to the eastern shore of Virginia. Chesapeake Bay on one side, Atlantic barrier islands on the other. Lots of farm land, no crowds. I would live there.
