Gear Talk / Re: 14' board for fitness and touring?

Thank you all again for your input!

I ended up getting a well discounted 2017 14' TRX, and finally got a chance to give it a go in the local waters around Deep Cove.

Coming from a Red Paddle Race 12'6" x 30", this board just flies, and despite it's length feels much more lively, and with that also a bit less stable. Can't wait to spend more time with it.

Do yourself a favor, and just get a 14' race board in the 26"-28" range.  I first got into SUP just to tour around and get some exercise, but now I joined a race league, and enjoy it much more.  I even use the race board for touring.  My touring board has yet to see the water since I got the race board.  If money is an issue, look for discounts on previous year's models or look for used boards.

Ditto - I've done the same thing. I figured even if I never raced it, I would mostly use it in flatwater when there's no surf, and I wanted something with easy glide. I ended up with a BIC WS Tracer from one of their riders who's swapping gear to SIC. It's definitely a great workout, and gets you out on the water when there's no surf.

I am leaning very much towards a discounted 2017 14' TRX for fitness and distance paddling, and keeping my 12'6" Astro Touring for family outings.
Racing is unfortunately off the table for me at the moment and for the foreseeable future, but going fast while remaining within a certain limit is fine.
I will hopefully get the chance to demo some boards next week at a local shop, and I hoping there will be a TRX available.

Thank you guys for all those suggestions and ideas!
I should have probably specified that the passenger is a tiny human, which is going to be just sitting there behind me.
My pug used to run around on the board, which threw me off balance numerous times.

I am actually playing with the idea to keep my 12'6" Astro Touring for when bigger trips with the little human are planned in the future.

I had looked at Sunova's website, and I can't wait to see more of these boards up here. I will keep my eyes open for any deals on the Sunova boards.

And yes, I have been/am looking at Craigslist, from Whistler down to Washington and Oregon. I am totally down to go on a road trip to get a board, especially when Portland is one of the stops.

Recently acquired *Dad car*. This fits the kayak as well as two boards, and still fits into our parkade.

Gear Talk / 14' board for fitness and touring?
« on: June 11, 2018, 12:49:57 AM »
Hi All,

I have been pondering about upgrading my paddling experience, coming from a 2014 12'6" x 30" Red Race. Storage space won't be an issue, so I can go for a hardboard this time.
I am not looking into racing, but will paddle for fitness, as well as the occasional lake paddle, and eventually some day-long coastal tours.
We have somewhat mixed water conditions up here around Vancouver and the coastal areas, and I (170lb, 5'9") would judge my balance at about intermediate on most days.
I might occasionally have a 25-30 lb passenger on short and flat lake paddles.

Currently there are two 2017 boards on sale at a local shop that caught my eye:
- SIC X 14.0 TWC  (28.5" wide)
- Amundsen 14’0” TR-X  (27" wide)

I have demoed the 14' TR-X in 2013, in flat water conditions, and found it to be fast and very stable, and I believe the 2017+ shape improves upon that a bit, but have no experience with the X 14.0.

Most 14' Touring boards are 30"+ wide, and seeing that I probably won't be hauling a lot of gear around, they might be a bit too wide, but again, I haven't had a chance to test any yet.

Is there any other board I should be looking at, or does anyone have experience with the somewhat wider 14' tourers in mixed water conditions, or will they just be too much volume for what I am planning to do?

This question has been on my mind for a while now, too.

I just ordered the Vaikobi vest to use with my 2 liter bladder.

Thank you for the pointer!

Of the two 12'6" iSups (both established brands) I have, neither has a perfect shape.
The first one, an 2013 Astro developed quite a rocker line with a pronounced upward bent just in front of the handle, and it's replacement only ended up lifting a bit at the tail.
The 2nd board, a Red Race 2014 board developed a slight twist throughout it's length that is visible when out of the water, but seems to have no effect on board performance that I can tell.
This doesn't bother me or my GF (who's using the Astro) much since we aren't racing, but I sure hope that these types of issues will be resolved in future generations.

This one goes back and forth between Sechelt and Vancouver. We watched it play at Davis Bay a few weeks back. What a beautiful creature.
Let's hope it sticks around for a bit longer.

This Is a German Page but technical specifications should be underdtandable.
They Seen to be connected to mistral somehow.
Read about it in a german sup mag - no personal experience.
Greetings from Austria Bernhard

Interesting. It looks like Mistral already offers the new 22PSI Bravo pump. Maybe by end of the year, we in North America will be able to get our hands on them as well.

Currently I am using the 14.5PSI version and then top the boards of with the supplied hand pumps.

Klitschko needs to work on his balance. ;)

Publicity stunt or not, the English language got severely abused in this clip.

I can 2nd the Amundson 14" TRX recommendation. It's fast but stable, a very good all around board. You can find them for $2000.
This summer I demoed this beast and if I had a proper storage solution for it, I would have made the purchase.

For touring and cruising, I am using this http://www.mec.ca/product/5024-396/mec-aegir-20-pack/?h=10+50004+50042+50587&f=10+50004+50587 and in that 2 aquapac electronics cases for keys, wallet and phone.

For exercising, I just take along one of the Aquapacs with phone, a credit card, ID and car key in it. This gets tied to the d-rings up front.

If you can get your hands on a Kialoa Pupu (the green blade). You get a slightly heavier paddle than the Insanity, but due to this paddle not being continued, it's being sold for dirt cheap in many places.

But I want to get all of it in! Until we get Google "Waterview" mapping, the fisheye is the best way.

The next two are a secret put-in that I found that avoid the parking hassles in Deep Cove.

This will come in handy next week.
Thank you! I won't tell anyone, promise! ;)
