Zoners -

It has been a while since I have posted on the site.  I hope everyone is happy and healthy in this interesting situation we all find ourselves in.

As most of you know the Cape Cod Bay Challenge (CCBC) event has been around for a long time.....2020 was set to be our 13th year for the event.  We have been struggling with not running the event as we have for the past 12 years but like other events have come up with a compromise....a "virtual" charity paddle.

Any time during the week of Saturday, August 1 to Saturday, August 8th, participants will be required to complete a 15-mile route of their choice (in any location around the world!). There will be strict safety provisions paddlers must abide by and participants will be required to raise money for Christopher’s Haven as a part of their commitment to the event.

Since this has always been more of an East Coast event (more specifically Northeast), we would love to have any Zoners from around the world who are interested in joining the CCBC family join us for the virtual paddle.

For those of you aren't familiar with the CCBC, our event raises money for a wonderful non-profit in Boston called Christopher's Haven (www.christophershaven.org).  Christopher’s Haven provides housing to children (and their families) who come to Boston for pediatric cancer treatment.

While Christopher's Haven may be located in Boston it is not a "local" non-profit.  Children and families from all over the world come to Boston for its world class medical facilities and innovative pediatric cancer treatments. Christopher’s Haven not only provides housing for families who have a child going through cancer treatment but it is a support system to help with things large and small, and a community where families can be together, share a laugh, be comforted, and comfort others. Christopher’s Haven allows kids and families to focus their energies on the challenge of beating cancer. It is an amazing place.

More information on the event can be found on our Eventbrite page:

Registration is OPEN for the July 27, 2019 Cape Cod Bay Challenge!

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2019-cape-cod-bay-challenge-registration-59661727834

A few things you need to know:

   -   The route will once again be coastal along the south shore of Massachusetts and will end at Duxbury Beach. The start will either be
Nantasket Beach or Scusset Beach and the choice of which one will be made the week before the event based on wind and weather
       forecast.

   -   The Board Length Requirement has been dropped to 11’+. The hope is that this will attract more paddlers. More paddlers = more
money for Christopher’s Haven. Please understand that if you decide to use a shorter board, you are still expected to be able to keep a
3.5 mph pace throughout the event. Training is key.

   -   The event is open to two person relay teams (not more than 2 people). If you don’t feel comfortable paddling the entire 22 miles but
still want to participate, find a friend and do it together as a team.

We are extremely excited about the 2019 CCBC. We have The Elovators back at the fundraiser to entertain us with their sweet reggae sounds.

Long time sponsors Wachusett, Nauti Seltzer, Polar, Essentia, Levitate, BDE & Kialoa continue to support our cause and we are excited to introduce Archer Roose as our new wine sponsor and Sunova as our new board sponsor.

Register now!!!

Here is a great pic from the start at Scusset Beach and a cool one showing the finish area and venue (white tent).  22.4 miles in 7.5-hours.  Wind at our backs the whole time.  We could have done it in 6 hours (or better) but we needed to make sure family & friends could see us land in Duxbury so we took some extended breaks and had a really nice day on the water.

The hope is Duxbury Beach Reservation and Blakemans will have us back next year as it is an A+ venue.

Don -

All the details have not been ironed out but we should have everything ready to go by May 1.

The plan is to stay relatively close (within a quarter mile) of shore at all times...probably closer for a majority of the paddle.  I have paddled the Nantasket to Duxbury course in parts and both ways several times.  There are certain sections (along Humarock Beach) where side chop will be prevalent and then certain sections where it is generally protected and calm-ish (obviously depend on weather, wind and swell).  It is a pretty cool paddle with lots of massive house gazing along the way.  Nantasket is one of the local surf spots and could have some swell to paddle out through at the beginning but that time of year is generally flat.

If the forecast is for a stiff wind coming from the south, the plan is to change to start to Scusset Beach (where we launched last year) and paddle north with the wind to Dux Beach (also about 22 miles).

The addition of the relay teams does not make this a race.  I know there are a bunch of people that really want a race component to the CCBC but it adds some serious logistical issues and isn't really what the CCBC is all about.  There are plenty of other race events out there that paddlers can participate in to satisfy their competitive spirit.  The thought of adding the relay teams is that it opens the event up to people who might not be interested in paddling the entire 22 miles and brings in more $$$s for Christopher's Haven.  We will limit the number of teams to 15-20 or something like that and our hope is that we will have more people interested in paddling the 22 miles solo.  Non-paddling team members will be on the support boats and teams can change paddlers only during on of the breaks.

Thinking that we will kick things off around 7am this year but need to confirm that with the authorities at the launch locations.

Hope you guys can make it!!!!

Update.....

Not sure the Nicaraguan resorts below fit the bill for our long weekend getaway because they are difficult to get to but I plan on checking one or both out for a week long family vacation some time......hopefully soon.

1) Rancho Santana - https://ranchosantana.com/ - No golf and not sure about SUS rentals but looks to be pretty sweet

2) Mukul - http://www.mukulresort.com/ - Just south of Rancho Santana - Seems to have it all.  Not sure about SUS rentals.

Still searching for the perfect option for our group.....Costa Rica seems to be high on the list with all involved

Ok.  So I am more of a lurker than a poster here on the Zone (except during CCBC season), but I know the vast knowledge that exists within the Zone will point me in the right direction.

Contemplating a trip with a group of friends (couples) within the next year to celebrate some milestone birthdays & anniversaries and I want to steer the group to a location where I can surf/SUP daily with ease.

We are looking at 3-4 nights and are all east coasters (Boston)

The perfect situation would be:
-   2-4 hour flight from Boston (ideally direct options)
-   Relatively upscale accommodations with golf & spa for the non-surf crew
-   Good restaurants close by
-   Breaks at or near the resort
-   Decent SUP rental options nearby

Any recommendations/help would be much appreciated. Thanks!!!

Figured we needed a little Zep in this thread

My favorite distance paddle tune is The Rain Song.....here is a cool acoustic version with Page, Plant & the London Metropolitan Orchestra

A great article by one of our most dedicated paddlers and an all around great person.  I couldn't paddle this one due to injury but I was on a support boat all day and I think Michelle captured the day perfectly in her article.  Take a read if you have a few minutes.

Appreciate the kind words and support guys. Deciding not to have those events put my stomach in knots but it is the right call for a bunch of reasons. We are determined to bring them back next year with the stoke cranked up!
