Need some help. I’m down sizing from a 7’3 JL hover board, and having a hard time deciding what to go with. I’ve narrowed my options to a JL 6’5 Flying V @ 115l and the current 6’7 Fanatic Sky SUP 125l I’m 185lbs/83kg

From what I gather the Fanatic is 3lbs heavier. Looking to use this board as a stepping stone into wing foiling too. Looking for some opinions on both

I'm not saying power to weight ratio isn't a factor. but your missing the point of this post. I'm not saying the larger guy has an advantage in the wind at all.  This is about an event that already happened. And this isn't about conner or kai racing against heavier people

I agree a sumo wrestler isn't going to beat conner or kai, everyone knows this... no need to break out the calculator to figure out this one. But what transpired here wasn't a race among pro's. If the heavier paddler won... the heavier paddler won, you need to give credit where credit is due. and in the case of "floridewindsup" I dont think weight was the deciding factor here

I think in heavy upwind conditions it comes down to pure strength and endurance, so a stronger fitter person will win. Technique also has a lot to do with it (using your core + body-weight particularly)...

I agree. paddling up wind on a SUP is totally different from a cyclist. I think your all thinking too hard. It's probably something as simple as this other paddler simply had better technique. your also not condisdering brute strength, he could have just powered through. I see it all the time. Here locally I never count out the larger guys, they are a lot stronger then I am, and Im not gonna lie, I've had 200lb + guys beat me. next tiem dont let em brainwash you.

look at guys like Thomas Maximus, you think you can beat him? dont count em out

I also wanted to add. every so often I'll spray some corrosion block or any type of rust inhibitor down my cable chases when my board is sitting for a while. You can never tell the conditions of the cables without a visual inspection. You should also make it good practice to replace your cables once a year... I always do. I'm not gonna let lack of maintenance ruin my day in the wind!!

 :osorry to hear that. But, it's probably better you found out now then on the water. By the looks of things it seems that there has been corrosion for quite some time.

throughout the generations of production and customs, I've also noticed some inconsistency with the threaded rod/adjustment nuts used for the steering system. I have been lucky enough to have good beefy threaded rods with metal adjustment nuts. While others I've seen with thinner cheaper looking rods and plastic adjustment nuts.  I did notice that there was a batch of production boards that came with really thin threaded rods, so thing you can easily bend them with your bare hands.  Your right though the customs do come with larger diameter holes in the threaded rods, I know this because I can fit larger diameter steering cables through them vs the production versions. But not all production boards come with less then ideal hardware, it seems to be random.  I've also had friends who have threaded rods breaking with very little time on the water, just poor quality hardware. Again this seems to be super random.

this is an old video of molokai hoe.  yes, those boats are near 40'+  Those fast moving swells are hard to get on, especially on OC6, more often then non it's not a top to bottom drop, your riding on the tops of these swells for the most part.  It's also hard because kaiwi isn't an at your back kinda run, you need to have a damn good steerman to paddle that channel in those conditions. Kaiwi is really about making the crossing, the water is so... all over the place.

Mark had one of the 14's with the new push rod steering out for a Maliko about a month or so ago. I got to at least look at it and it is very slick and refined. I'm not a Luddite but I'm comfortable enough with the cable system that I wouldn't change out just to get the steering. But it's a nice side benefit if you were changing up to a new board. If you pay attention to the cable system and understand it's design, it is reliable and easy to service. I still always carry a length of bicycle inner tube to jam the rudder in neutral position if something fails unexpectedly.

The V1 Bullet 17 4 is an amazingly good shape for downwind and open ocean. Super confidence inspiring and capable of very fast runs. I've only had my used 17 4 for about 5 or 6 weeks now but it is really changing my downwind experiences for the better and the speed potential is amazing. SIC has really got a winner with the V1 Bullet shape, especially when you couple it with a light layup, hollow board. Took away all my board lust for something else. I can even look at the V3 and not feel even the slightest twinge of 'gotta have someday'.

100% agree. Innovation is always good, cables work fine for me. easy to replace etc. I've had OC1's before this so it's cable steering is nothing new to me. all kinds of tricks to get you up and running when you snap a cable on the ocean, if you been around the guys that know, it's not a big deal.  cable maintenance is the root of steering problems on the ocean.

The v1 is a GREAT board, I always like to try the new stuff too, but so far the V1 is still my DW goto beast. I have a V3 being built right now, not as a replacement for my V1 but a board for different conditions.

lily is not available yet... early 2016. I'm pre ordered mine. 20 minute battery really isn't bad at all. it doesn't have all the goodies that some of the other follow drones have, but it's nearly half the cost right now. if you preordered a few months ago they were going for $499  ;) cant complain for the price
