SUP General / Re: POLL - do you still surf ?
« on: July 26, 2009, 07:00:28 PM »
Aloha,

Surfing was my life for so many years, growing up in California in the seventies it was the deal.  Wind and swell would change and it was over the fence from school. Stayed with it for a long time, moving to Maui in 85 was the dream.  I started to SUP about 2 months ago, this has given me a new hope to be back in the water again.  I still have longboards and they have a fair amount of dust on them but what I have gained from stand up, muscle and a sense of freedom to cruise, I will never give up either sport.

It's weird, I want to be in the water everyday now paddling. Just like surfing as a teen. Now I carry my trusty Ole along.

I can't wait to feel as comfortable catching and working waves on my SUP as I used to do on my short and longboards.  Still feel somewhat lost with the paddle on the waves I have caught.  Now I truly have to say, SUP is way high on the stoke meter.

Aloha,

This is what is so great about this site.  You come home from a long day of the F & B world, have a few cold ones and get into these post.  Born and raised in Southern California, started surfing around 14 and that pretty much was it .  Right out of high school left for El Salvador for 6 months, 1975 was unreal, 55 days straight it was at least head high, went back for years, best wave I have ever surfed. Not so cool anymore.  Moved over from Balboa Ca. to Maui in 1985.  Started seeing stand up a few years ago on the west side.  Maui is home and so stoked to be be into this.

Aloha,

Just found one at boarders in Maui, been waiting for weeks.  I will start subscribing now after seeing this issue.  Great thing was seeing my young neighbor boy featured in the issue.  Everything said about Kai was to the tee, such a good kid. I remember when he was about 5 when we moved in, you could see the fire then and I know he will follow his dreams.  What a great family, good luck Kai.

The Shape Shack / Advice for basic repairs
« on: July 12, 2009, 10:48:14 AM »
Aloha,

Two months into paddling and so hooked, can't believe the addiction.  Couple of questions, first I have a Jimmy Lewis 10'6'' all around board.  My paddling style is not very smooth yet and now the rails are starting to look like a star filled evening on Maui.  Broken chips on the rails, the board is blue so I was wondering if I should use epoxy with blue pigment to fix these.  My younger days were filled with many surfboard repairs but was not sure about the coat on this board, looks like paint chipping, not the normal spider web cracking on surfboards.  It is not leaking, just looks funky.

Second question, sorry hope I am not boring everyone, my QB paddle has a 1 inch slice in the backside, not even sure how it happened???, soft to the push and will leak.  What's the best way to fill this, this is a carbon fiber blade. Use epoxy or even some old surfboard resin I have.  Mahalo for any advice.

Unreal, so rare to see Ma'alaea like this.  Many years on Maui and I tell you it's a gift to see days like this. When it's big, a experience you will never forget.  Went past it everyday on this swell, go by at 5:30 AM, see a few guys out, work 11 hours and go back around 6:00 PM and see fifty out. I bet it's a great feeling knowing nobody is going to drop in on the brother, love it.  So perfect, wonder if my cat would get in to it.

Aloha,

We have just returned from my second attempt this new addiction I have.  Huge difference, balance was much better and paddling went on for minutes instead of seconds.  If a thirteen year old says "dad your not as big of a kook today" something got to feeling right. Thousand Peaks was flat, lucky for me still, but the wind popped up at times, still killer day.

I am still not sure of the paddle size. Local shop loaned me a 84" Werner, very cool, but seemed long.  I am 5'11" at 165ish, any input would be great, trying an 80" Saturday.

Mahalo for any advice.

Aloha,

I found out about this site about 1 month ago, replied with questions about the basics.  Now I am the stoked owner of a used Jimmy lewis AA, 10'4".  I have watched this sport daily driving to Lahaina for years, thinking it looks pretty easy and what a great workout.  Went out the first time with a very experienced waterman, "Kimo",  I have been out of the game for a few years and just on the way to  recovery after surgery.  First time, way harder than it looked.  I loved it, thinking it was going to be way easier than surfing. Granted surfing now is part of me, but still weak.  Paddle boarding gives me a new hooked feeling only after a few hours.

I cannot wait to go this Friday for my second round.. I know I will be paying the dues and being the green one in the water, whatever  to the people who question the stand up style, what a great new vibe to get into, not like I am going to be hanging in the lineup, just feelin it. I know I will totally get into to this quickly. The vibe in the water was cool, people knew you were green, lots of good laughs and praise.

So, from a rookies point of view, first time hard, but so cool.

50 and round two.

Aloha

Mahalo noworrieshawaii,

No Worries, classic my friend.  Yes, the sport seems like a perfect time to be getting into, the boards are so different to me, I check them out and they just seem so massive, very cool.  Looking at them, you know this is going to be a fine time.  I knew this site would be helpful, already you can see all the Aloha in the feedback. Again Mahalo for the info.  Your right about 1000 peaks and Puamana, with the light Konas today it was almost glass this evening.

Mahalo PonoBill,

Just watching this you can see it's going to have a huge impact of the recovery process.   Thanks for the positive feedback on the pain's of shoulders.  I've only seen paddles from a distance, never knew about all of the sizes and flex.

First - Go to Upcountry Fitness in Haiku and ask for Izaak Tyrell. He's a trainer there who specializes in physical rehab, as well as he's done the channel crossing races SUP and loves wave SUP (so he can really help you). I sent my husband, who had had 15 shoulder dislocations over his lifetime, to Upcountry Fitness, and they took him from barely being able to have any shoulder rotation to now he's SUP head high's with NO pain and NO injury. The trainers are truly great there.  :) Deb

MAHALO,

I live upcountry and have heard good things about Upcountry Fitness, cool for your husband, can't wait for the same head highs on a paddle board.

Mahalo Sam,

Yes Lighting Bolt has been around as long as I have been in Maui, over 25 years.  They moved from their last location, need to check them out.  I  remember the first time i saw Gerry out surfing Dumps, huge, he was unreal and so mellow, but don't even think about getting the set wave, he was all over it, I  never forget it.   Mahalo Sam

Aloha,

Here's the story, started surfing at 14, 52 now.  Looking at any information to help me get started.  First issue, have not surfed for many years,  had a bad snowboarding crash at whistler, torn rotor cuff, had surgery 5 months ago, doctor says it's time to get it going.  At 5'11" 165 and fair shape, but week from lack of all things I am into.  I see this sport everyday going to Lahaina and  I am so ready to get into it.  Really want to focus on the health issues and getting back in the water.  Want to cruise and get strong, but also want to surf.  Wave knowledge and skills are still with me, but like I said very week and somewhat lost in the stand up world.  Any info would be great, board size, paddle size, etc. Mahalo for your help, again can't wait to get back out and feel home again.
