Technique / Re: How to end ride on wave?
« on: November 02, 2017, 10:38:26 AM »
Bean--#2 is what I'd call a "chicken Island Turn", that is, I do a 180 like an island turn, but only after the wave is past. It's really pretty easy. I nailed the first one I did after only four or five practice tries--and then blew a few hundred before I got my second one. The trick is to start the turn on the back of the wave while the board still has a little forward motion, and finish it in the trough, when it's stopped dead. And then don't stand there celebrating, because you need to get back to the middle and start paddling. Actually I paddle as I'm stepping back which aids stability or at least gives me something else to think about other than falling.

This!

Has anyone used the FCS II C-4 Spitfire?
Will the tool-less fins fit in any board?

Tool-less Spitfire has excellent FW straight-line tracking on my Bark Laird 12'6, but tends to catch a lot of weeds/vegetation in lower water areas.

It would be nice if they're was similar services like consumer reports that had post/present analysis info on all major SUP brands boards along with manufacturing info...something like the used car market analysis. I would think it would stabilize all the pricing on new/used boards along with holding the companies responsible for their defects.

Hello!
I have a friend here in Sweden who repairs and shapes boards. Everytime he gets a Naish (raceboard) in for repair the damage to them are extensive and some dings and damages are a bit hard to understand how they happened. Other brands are more straight forward. The ding is where it got hit but in a Naish case the ding seems to generate "aftershocks". Don't know how to explain it better. Does anyone have similar experience with Naish? Are they a bit more fragile than others? This concerns both the carbonboards and the raceboards that are supposed to be a bit more durable.

What are the year(s) having the most issues?

Sorry all, didn't mean to sound grumpy like. Just don't want SUP ending up as a fad.

In addition, when do celebrity shapers start adding to the total cost of the product? Seems like all major brands MARKET their shapers with board.

Do I care about these celebrity shapers?

Taiwan made NSP DC OCEAN RACE PRO CARBON 14'0" X 24.5 $2,999...come on! This is getting stupid and starting to feel like late 80's early 90's bmx money grab.

SUP General / This Week Surfers Will Ride a Wave in the Amazon

"Surfing the Amazonian bore tides is dangerous, Mr. Laus says, not only because of their force — he compares it to a tsunami — but because these rivers carry the blood of a breathing jungle. You’re the stranger in a land of jaguars, crocodiles, snakes, piranhas, parasites and tropical diseases."

SUP General / Re: SUP World Series for 2016 suggestions
« on: January 15, 2016, 01:21:23 PM »
When you really think about it, it's really amazing that SUP racing has even gotten as much mainstream media attention that it has compared to other forms of paddle racing.  A sport that started off as nothing more than a novelty now seems the one and only paddle sport with top pros actually expecting to make a living.  The only people who give two shits about OC1/OC2/OC6, surf ski, and prone paddleboard racing are people who actually participate in the sport and then friends and family members, and that’s what makes them cool and unique.  No one in those sports expects to make a living (competing) from them and expect to be star athletes beyond the small community of those respective sports.  The SUP industry and event promoters are really pushing to get it into mainstream consciousness and athletes are really hoping to make a living from competing.  I am really stoked to see our sport have this kind of attention but in the long run is it really good thing?  I’ve had a lot of back and forth opinions about it and I often wonder of it would have been better for SUP racing to just have not gotten bigger than other forms of paddle racing.  As to what happens only time will tell.

Good, I like the exposure sports getting. Bad, there is no way I'm able to compete with people that SUP for a l.i.v.i.n.

Downwind and Racing / Re: Bark Vapor
« on: December 24, 2015, 06:27:28 AM »
My friend and Surftech rider, bikeski here on the Zone, has just gotten his custom Vapor this week and we have gotten out already for a couple of downwinders.  The premier west Michigan shop, The Outpost, has another custom 14'x26 and their main man Jim joined us recently.  The Vapors are a nice, trim shape. Svelte, with a real pleasant gun-like outline out in front of you from the standing area.  Nice boards and these guys are fast on them.  Bikeski commented that the board was better at chasing little bumps than his Bark downwinder.  Not light lay-ups at around 27 lbs I'm told.

Those are 14x26? Those look really long (17') for some reason.

Gear Talk / Re: Project: building a SUP airline bag
« on: December 21, 2015, 10:39:14 AM »
Nice job, but way more than I do. I stuff my board in a bag, fill the bag full of stuff (paddles, wetsuit, rashies, spare skivvies, etc. and go for it. Never had a problem with an airline as baggage, they don't use forklifts, so it's lower impact and no spearing. Air freight is a different deal. You need a crate to survive that.

Do same thing with my snowboard bag when traveling...filling it with jackets, pants, helmet, boots, and etc. Gear stored in bag naturally helps protect the board.
