SUP Surf Board an 8 foot Laird Fire Fish Board. Great board for someone 180 pounds or less. The nicest thing about it is how light and easy it is to carry. It really helped my balance since even when paddling flat water you have to engage your core and stay ready for surfing. Easy to put on and off the car and even fits inside my hatchback. No repairs done and in good shape. Selling because it barely floats my dad bod anymore and my son likes to paddle with me so I need more volume.

I'm thinking of doing some cross country running to increase my fitness for paddling. Would you recommend 5 or 10 mile racing as a good cross training distance for a downwind/SUP surfer?

Is there an app you use for both Running and SUP? I have an iphone and would like to be able to use one app to plan and time my workouts. Thanks for any suggestions in advance.

NorthEast / Re: Paddling the Hudson
« on: May 31, 2015, 08:01:19 AM »
From my first paddle on it yesterday the Hudson definitely has challenging tides, winds, wave chop and boat traffic. It combines the traffic of Victoria BC's harbour, with seemingly no speed or traffic restrictions, with the tides and wind of coastal water.

Not to hijack the thread but if anyone is paddling the Hudson Sunday night or Monday morning, from Manhatten and has an extra board to rent send me a PM. I'm visiting from the West Coast and would love to do a liberty paddle. I tried renting a board from a shop but they would only let me take it out with a guide so we did a 45 min little paddle on the river.

Cheers

SoCal / San Diego May 2-6th bring inflatable or rent surf sup?
« on: March 13, 2015, 06:23:43 PM »
Hi Socal locals.

I'm coming to San Diego for a conference at Hilton San Diego Bayfront May 2-4 and staying for two more days of paddling. Should I bring my inflatable Starboard Astro or rent a surf SUP? Is it easy to rent boards early in the morning, in the harbor?

I would like to paddle every day and I'm used to paddling a busy harbor, we have ferries, recreation boats and seaplanes landing everywhere but locals know best.
Where should I stay on the 5th to catch a day or two of surf?

Thanks for any tips, I googled what I was looking for and got a few tips but local Zoners know.

Gear Talk / Re: Handheld VHF Recommendations
« on: July 09, 2014, 10:32:09 PM »
Thanks, guys. Looking for a two way communication device as it seems people near Victoria are very concerned about paddlers in high winds and waves, and coast guard and Sar won't have my cell number. Monitoring and using a VHF during a break in a downwind run seems pretty unlikely, but better to have something that will work if we try. Cobra floating, one recommendation, any more?

Gear Talk / Handheld VHF Recommendations

LaPerouseBay recommended the Icom M72 a couple of years ago. Any more recommendations for a submersible handheld good for downwind run? If you know of a good case that can keep it secure on a camel back strap, that would be great as well.

Looking for something that will keep the Coast Guard from having to check on us every time we downwind.

Thanks!

Gear Talk / Re: Sea Eagle Needlenose Inflatable Opinions?

I would avoid any inflatable SUP boards that can't inflate to 18psi if your planning to get serious about paddling. I've tried a Red Paddle Race and loved it and have paddled a hundred times on my Starboard Touring inflatable. If you are on a budget and can only spend a few hundred, look at walmarts cheap one (you could return it if it doesn't work for you) or possibly Tower Inflatables and plan to sell it and upgrade to a solid board or high end Red Paddle, when you go SUP crazy and give up cable or lattes.

Gear Talk / Re: LED Lights for a paddle board?
« on: May 22, 2014, 06:04:35 PM »
I taped on some led waterproof tea lights to the bottom of my board from ebay. I used them on a river and the results were worth the 50 cents or so invested in them. Lots of dive and waterproof lights could work. What ever happened to those guys using Kickstarter for their led paddle?

Just to add to anyone searching the forum on the hero it's a great board for learning to surf on and general flat water paddling. At 175 pounds it's great for both small wave surfing and flat water paddling. Plus Alaska will let you fly with it!

Victoria has a facebook page Stand Up paddle club of victoria. We have done a couple of downwinders this year. I don't think the conditions have been perfect yet but the wind direction has been ok. I found the waves were a little too close together and steep for one of our sessions. We'll get it figured out!

Both his health and mine have been much better, thanks to getting out on the water more often. Water rehab for dogs is all rage these days :)

The reason I got into paddle boarding was to help get my dog with a bad leg lots of exercise, we're waiting for the weather to warm up to get him back in the ocean. No 5 mm wetsuits available for him!
