SUP General / Doggie on board!
August 13, 2012, 03:34:35 PM
I finally was able to get my dog on my board, but we had to carry him on because the board would move every time he placed a paw on it even though I was sitting on it and the fin was in the mud. So he ended up laying diagonally across the board. Really tough to balance. Any suggestions on how to get him on without the board moving so he can be straight down the center line?

Looking forward to it, Tomkat!

It has dawned on me that people on this thread may think I've been ranting at them. It was not intended that way. I was merely question the CG's logic in assuming that boards "evolved" after being in salt water and going to fresh water. No ranting here, really  :)

Although there is a slight difference in buoyancy between between salt and fresh water, the boards float great in the lake and I have no problems. I've had the exact same experience in Mission Bay - NO difference. The pfd regulation is probably there because of all the new people that are new to the sport, but then that means just as many new people on the beaches. That seems to definitely be a problem. Funny how the boards are STILL made of the same foam core. They are a pfd. So back to my question - what is the difference?

I paddle flatwater. If I go to Mission Bay, I do not need a pfd. When I take my board out of the water and take it to a lake, my board is classified as a "vessel" and I have to wear a pfd. Please tell me, what physical changes took place to cause my board to be a "vessel"? It's easier to drown at the beach/waves than in a lake, although it does happen. This is just not sound logic, but then again, it's the Feds. Feeling a little discriminated against. Aargh!

SUP General / Re: Cleaning a deck pad...

I've heard of toothpaste containing sand (an abrasive, that's what cleans our teeth), so not sure. But the Simple Green works really well and it's not gummy like toothpaste, so it rinses right off.

@ PonoBill: That's my dog's name - Sam! Just not completely sure if he'll SUP with me or not. In other words, the lake's an hour away. If I take him there, will I end up sitting on the shore? Guess I just have to try!

I have a white deck pad, too. I use Simple Green (do not dilute) and gently scrub with a nylon shower brush. I don't think I'd recommend the Comet, as it contains bleach and you don't want you deck pad to fall apart on you. I clean for a living, so I'm very careful of what I use. The maker of my board (BOGA) also recommended Simple Green to me. It seems to work really well and as the board dries (rinse first) the pad gets whiter and whiter. I also use the same on the rest of my board VERY GENTLY for black marks. Hope this helps  :)

Thank you everybody. You've both been a great help. Your posts give me some ideas. When I actually try it this summer I'll let you know how it went!

Thank you so much, Bill. You always have great and detailed advice. Right after I made my last post and decided to use the internet (duh!) and searched for the cold bag. Just wasn't sure if you were talking about the soft rack straps or a sling. I actually have Steelcore straps, but they'll work and won't rust.

Again, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Bill,

Two questions - what is a cooler bag (who makes them) and what carry straps do you mean? Thanks for your help. There's not much advise out there unless you're paying big bucks!

Hey, everyone. I'd like to learn to fish off my SUP at the local lake, but I can't sink a lot into it. I figured out that a milk/file crate would come in handy for tackle, etc., but I need a place to put my catch and keep it fresh without using a cooler. I'm into homemade stuff. I also thought that I could use the crate as a fish box and put my tackle in a pouch to strap to the outside. Any suggestions? I cannot afford a Boardfisher.

Has anyone tried the BarKnuckle? I've tried to find more info on it, but their website is limited.

Thanks in advance,
Susan

Thanks for the offer! Unfortunately, I don't get out there that often, as I don't know the freeways that well. So my husband takes me places beyond the Inland Empire or Havasu. But if I do, is there a good time/day to catch you?

Has anyone out there compared the Tahoe Bliss 12.6 to the Boardworks Raven 12.6? Where can I demo them both in SoCal? Just wondering which one would be best for recreational racing and touring in flatwater only. I weigh 125 lbs. and am 5'4". Thanks in advance!
