So will it be completely awful on flat water or just slower than other boards? I've been looking for a solid deal on a fanatic falcon or similar, but this popped up on Craigslist for well under a grand.

So id like to have something that's obviously got enough glide to make flatwater paddling fun - vs the allwave.  I'd like to participate in the local races with the 14ft crowd and not the rec crowd,  but I don't care if I'm competitive. Never really downwinded but here are plenty of open ocean options here.

I have an opportunity to pick up this board for a great price.  Hoping to get some advice / feedback.  I pretty much paddle surf only in the Charleston SC area.  I'm 32,  6'4", 250lbs, reasonable athletic and I'd consider myself to have decent balance but not exceptional. I have a Fanatic Allwave 9'10 which is completely stable in any kind of windy choppy surf conditions - solid as a rock for me in 15 mph wind and white caps on the ocean.   I previously had an Allwave 9'1", which was fun in cleaner conditions and good waves, but not stable enough in any real chop, in which case I'd grab the 9'10".  Charleston never really gets great surf, so I sold it in search of a second board i'd get more use out of.  I've never been on a 14ft before.  Would this be a reasonably stable board for me to get?  I'm certainly willing to put in my practice time.  28inches sounds narrow to me (for surfing) but I suspect on a 14ft board it's a different ball game.  Looking to get into local races and do some distance.  I'd rather be having fun (not falling in) than fast.  Thoughts?

Wind Powered / Help getting started
June 06, 2014, 07:15:45 PM
Need some tips to get started with a wind - SUP setup.  I currently have a 9'10 Allwave that I am very comfortable on.  I would consider myself intermediate in the surf and am planning to downsize to a 9 ish foot board soon.  I dont have any experience with windsurfing.

I'm interested in getting a sail as a means to spend more time on the water when the waves are lousy.  Im not particularly interested in performance, just trying to have fun!  I'm in Charleston SC and we have plenty of windy days.

What size sail should I be looking for?  (I'm 6'4 and 240lbs)
Are sails universal for the board?
What do I look for in used craiglist sails?
What is the learning curve going to be like?  Can I figure this out myself, or should I plan to take a lesson?

Thanks for your input!

Creek!

About a year and a half ago you convinced me to buy a 9'10 Allwave from JimK (my name was SC Andy until I lost my Password).  Great Purchase!   I have been loving the Allwave but now it's time for something smaller.  The watersedge fish SUP caught my eye as something reasonably priced and wide enough for South Carolina choppy conditions (I'm 240 lbs).  Checked one out today at a local shop and it looks like a cool board.   I may just downsize to a new allwave as well...

Gear Talk / WatersEdge Boards FL? Any experience?
May 21, 2014, 09:57:26 PM
Anyone have experience with WatersEdge Boards out of the New Smyrna Beach FL area?  They appear to be smartly designed surf SUPs, and competitively priced.  I'm curious about their surfability and durability.  Any owners out there??

As far as I know the Shem Creek Shootout is no longer happening.  The shop that was coordinating it closed and nobody seems to have put together anything like it.

Hi - I live in charleston, typically surf at the folly pier, east 7th, or the washout.  I'm usually out by myself but would be happy to meet up and swap boards for a bit of you'd like - or at least grab a beer after.

Gear Talk / Re: Yolo coastal Cruiser 12' for a big guy?

The 12 ft yolo will definitely float you - i'm 6'3 and was 250 or so when I got this as my first board.  It floated me just fine.  I had a friend who's 300+ and he was fine on it too.

I always wear knee pads when KNUPing, so a helmet seems smart when SUPing.

SUP General / Re: Is SUP right for me?

I have less than a year experience SUPing, but similarly tried out a friends board and paddle and loved it!  I first bought a 12 ft surfboard shaped board for under 1k ( all i could afford) and outgrew it within 9 months.  I listened to good advice and spent the money for a nice lightweight paddle, which hopefully i will have for a while.  I probably should have purchased a higher quality board to begin with, but now i have a board for my wife to use, friends, whoever.   Also - i've learned a lot about the sport, different boards, and most importantly what I like to do and what my paddling style is.   Plus i can always sell it on craigslist.

If you enjoyed paddling enough to be thinking about it still, grab a board, a good paddle, and it'll get you on the water.  You'll have a great time and get a lot of excersize too.   Good luck!

Thanks again for the input - I ordered a 9'10" Allwave from JimK a few days ago.

Thanks Jim!

Thanks for all the info.  I def dont want to outgrow the next board so quick.  I had found the allwave researching " boards for big dude" or something , but thought it would be too small for flat water.  I'll call around and see if i can demo one somewhere but so far it seems like a great suggestion.  Thanks!

Gear Talk / Need advice for second board purchase
January 01, 2013, 03:18:33 PM
Hi Everyone,

Happy new year from SC.  First time posting on here, I need some help picking out a new board.

I have been SUPing for about a year.  I started out paddling only flat water around Charleston harbor, but over the past few months I've been spending a lot of time surfing.  Keep in mind that surfing here is usually choppy and small.   I have a 12' Yolo coastal cruiser that I can catch small waves on and get some really fun rides.  I've been really happy with it so far but I feel like I'm outgrowing it.  I have problems catching bigger and faster breaking waves. I feel like I cant turn quickly enough, and on bigger waves usually i get pounded.

So here's what I'm looking for in a new board:
1. it's gotta float me - I'm 6'4" and 250
2. ride bigger and faster waves
3. durable - im rough on my equipment
4. need something that my wife can paddle on flat water so we can go out together
5. under $1300 -1400ish

I have been looking at the NSP 11' coco mat - which seems like it would fit the bill, but I'm not sure if it would be different enough from what I've got.

What do you all think?
