Things finally seemed to come to a head when the SUP World Championships came to town.  Certain SUPers started getting greedy and behavior was occurring like Pono Bill describes.  Catching every wave in every set not allowing anything for anyone else but scraps.  Nobody wanted to say anything.   By the way, the competitors that came to Hilo from all over the world had courtesy in the water.  Right after the event ended a Bayfront swell arrived (rarely breaking left in Hilo).  This also coincided with an SUP expo that was connected to the World Contest.  Bayfront is usually crowded anytime it breaks but this time was extra crowded mainly with SUP's,  Any body else could not get a wave since the SUP's have greater paddling ability.  Basically it was anarchy in the line-up, as half of the guys out were new to the surfing thing, dropping in on each other, boards bouncing around everywhere.

OK...
I was there for the post-event Bayfront swell. As I was sidelined with a nasty cut to the foot, all I could do was watch - freakin' sucked because the waves looked so sweet!
Anyway, though I would not describe it as extreme pandemonium (as the above post suggests), I must say that I was appalled at how many set waves were being taken, with blatant disregard for the rest of the surfing community, by a few SUPsurfers.
Sure, we all like to get the most macking set waves, but consideration for others is key.
Nobody likes a wavehog - no matter his/her craft.
Aloha is about sharing and mutual respect - you give you get... bottom line.

Cool board...The advantage of the custom is that is it designed with 'you' in mind...even if the shaper has not done any sup board before, there is plenty of material for them to do some research and come up with something decent (considering they are decent shapers).

Marcelo is right. Many mass production boards are just that - produced for the masses. I am not saying that the boards are not good - they just are designed for a broader spectrum of riders. Getting a custom board is always a gamble but, if the cards fall in your favor, you can win big!

Man. I am still just trying to wrap my brain around that one...

I will say that just because it is different does not mean that it is wrong.

Evolution of design is based on experimentation - no risk, no gain.

I might add that breakthroughs tend to be met with a great deal of resistance.

I, for one, would jump on an opportunity to take it for a spin!

Wow! Just noticed this thread...
Some interesting boards in there - I want to test drive them all.
Patrice's 5'11" Proto1 might have looked strange but it sets a benchmark for microSUP (amazing, bro - I want to see more)!

Here is a pic of my 6'11" microSUP shaped by Jorge Mora of Sick Surfboards:

Carrying a bit o winter fat at 155lb - fighting weight is 150lb.

The epoxy microSUP is 6'11" x 28 1/2" x 4 1/8" and has a single "speed channel" (that is what Jorge calls it) running down the entire center. Including the center box, it has 7 fin boxes, allowing for a wide variety of configurations. The board is quite challenging to balance on, but, when on the wave, it more than makes up for it. I figure I can throw out the unicycle and Indo board. Core workout? The term now makes me laugh - I got your core workout!

If conditions get too choppy, I break out my big board - the 7'11" Island shortSUP (2nd pic)

I have not posted for some time and thought I would share where I am going with SUP. I would really like to see where others are going with it...

The pic is of me riding my custom 6'11" microSUP prototype shaped by Jorge Mora of Sick Surfboards (the board is really freaking small - but really freaking fun in semi glass to glassy conditions):

Custom is the ticket. If you are worried about spending too much cash on a question mark, then buy a used one - either one (or both) of Strand's boards would work.

At first this "event" was suppose to clarify the judging criteria, what can you tell us about that ? Have you discused about that with the riders ?
For exemple we saw many guys not using their paddle to get barreled, how are you going to judge that ? what about the criteria between Shortboard style/longboard style ? etc...

Cloclo has asked the 'Golden Question'. I have seen different SUPsurf judging formats, but it all comes back to longboarding when implemented. I say that it is time for the creation of a shortSUP (or just shortboard style) division, as it is quite difficult to judge the two modalities against one another.
