Gear Talk / Re: New Glide vs Old Glide.
November 24, 2011, 07:33:51 AM
I have the 2011 Glide and did a back to back run, first on a new one and then on mine.  It was in the river, not ocean due to the conditions but this is a big river with the run 9km long and the river would have to be as wide in places.  Wind was in the 30kn range so some nice runners were had.
I do not think Naish have done enough with the new one.  They have flattened the rocker and made the rails a bit softer, to stop that side pearling if your are to far forward, but I prefered my old one.
With a flatter rocker and still similar nose profile and not one of the new penetrator noses it it seemed the new one wanted to bury the nose more and rail refinements etc did not seem to make a huge difference.  The big rocker seems to make to old board unique.
On the run one of the guys had just picked up a Strarboard Point and screamed past me.  There was a mint one for sale and i have bought it and in my opinion it is far better than either Naish.  Back to the future I guess.
I have closed the gap significantly on my regular D/W partners.

As a long time surfer and now Sup, mainly on outer reefs, you do what you have to do to get out of the way.  Belly, knee, stand who cares. The two seconds to get to your feet can be the difference between making it or not.  I can't understand why Sup riders feel the need to justify themselves.  Most guys on shorties are going to think we are a bunch of wankers no matter how good we are.  They are not going to change their opinion on how we paddle.  We are not short boarders and while on the big girls, never will be.  Be happy with what your are doing.
Great vid and great surfing

Downwind and Racing / Re: Any Aussie Zoners do this race?

I went in this one.
Tough conditions and unfortunatly our normally reliable strong sea breeze did not get much over 12knots.  I found the first leg very hard 13km with a cross wind.  I was one of the back markers and it took just under 4 hours to do the 27km.  Glad I finished though, only got a downwinder for Christmas

Not so cold in the southern hemisphere.  Perth is the third windiest city in the world.  Fouth downwinder in a row tonight in bordies and rashie, making up for the lack of summer swell.  Temps in the 90's.
Had not even seen snow until I was 25 and went to the US :D

Gear Talk / Re: PSH 9' 2" Wide Ripper feedback

Hi VB
Came with cheapish plastic fins in a 2 + 1 set up.  The one I have is a swallow not a pin.
I also bought a rear fin the same size as the Jerry's so I can try as a thruster

I had my first paddle on the 9 2 yesterday.  Reefbreak about 700 yds offshore in bumpy conditions and only waist with the odd shoulder set.  Tippy compared to my Naish 9 6 quad, but so much better on the wave.  Faster, looser and paddled onto the waves as easily.  The wave has a sucky end section and it felt way more comfortable than the Naish.
Looking forward to some better waves.
Running Lopez quads.

Anyone got a review of the 8'9" psh ripper (bamboo progressive series)? Currently on the 9'6" WR, but want to try smaller. Lot narrower at 28.25" (29 5/8" WR), but my scrawny 74kgs (163 lbs) should be ok on it.
Any reviews, advice, &/or links to same much appreciated...

Hi Molly
If you get one make sure you let me know as I want to upgrade as well.  Did you see the pictures of the JL Quads coming out.  They look interesting as well

I just got one of these.  Warm and comfy
Made in Oz
The jetski lifeguards at the local surf club all wear them
http://www.sharkskin.com.au/

We have them sold here in Spain and I was considering for winter months. Are you satisfied with the quality and wind protection? Does it get too warm?

Sorry for the late reply been away surfing for the last week
Quality is good and meant to be 100% windproof.  Weather is starting to warm up and wore it with boardies and was just right.  Otherwise I wear it under my steamer when we tow surf in winter.  Tow surfing is the opposite to SUP as you are up to your neck in water while waiting and it gets cold
West Oz is not a cold place and water does not get much below 17deg C

Yesterday was our AFL grand final, same as your superbowl in US land
It is one of my favorite surfing days.  Met my brother at a popular and normally crowded break and 10.30 and told him by 11.30 we would have the whole bay to ourselves and shore enough at 11.30 all had gone to watch the game and we surfed the next two hours to ourselves.
Can't get much better than that

Even better the game was a draw and we do not have extra time and they replay the game next Saturday.  More uncrowded surf. Yeeha

Hi Everyone, my first post
I have had the old Mazda for years and now retired to the shed on our little place up the coast and used for launching and beach runs.  Just rigged the sled so I can carry the Sup without dragging in the water to get to our numerous and uncrowded outside reefs
