SUP General / Re: Shoulder issues/Paddle Craft Type

I've had a few shoulder surgeries due to contact sport (MMA, moto X etc.)

I started to SUP and within a relatively short space of a couple of years I started with shoulder issues. I wanted to be on the water so I looked into other water sports that I could still do while my shoulder healed up.

I started surfski paddling and in 3 months all my shoulder issues were gone. The main reason for this was I learned proper technique and found that controlling my technique was easier on a ski than on a SUP. I have gone back to SUP but if I SUP a lot or intensely the shoulder issues seem to return. I can Ski as much as I want with no issues.

That is my personal story and what it has boiled down for me personally is the technique being employed. You can paddle a ski with low elbows and good powerful technique whereas a SUP a low elbow technique is difficult to employ.

Perhaps it is injury dependent. Paddling a ski has kept me on the water and my shoulders are actually better than they have been in years.

An often overlooked factor is just training with other people.

I have been training mostly on my own and thought I was getting pretty fit. Yesterday I did a training session with someone better than me and realised I am not fit. He pushed me in ways I would never be able to push myself. I realised a lot about how I had been training and that it was not "hard" at all.

Having other people on the water to chase, draft and do drills with makes the whole experience more enjoyable. There will be days you will get to the water and not feel like pushing yourself and then once everyone is on the water before you know it you have put in a very decent session. Try and get in a squad and do regular squad training it opens a new world.

SUP General / Re: Is the SUP industry tanking?

We had a very vibrant SUP scene in our neck of the woods for a few years and it has really slowed down a LOT. I made the mistake of paddling a surfski about a year ago and for the most part never paddle my SUP anymore. Happy story though as I did a time trial on a SUP earlier this week after not paddling a SUP in anger for months and posted my fastest time over 6km ever. There seems to be some cross over what or how much I am not really sure.

Personally the value of SUP or any sport is very individual. The other major consideration is price for good gear. I can buy a surfski that is 6 meters long and weighs 9kg that will outlast the best made SUP. So when you start looking at cost, longevity etc. it makes sense to spend the money where the return in use will be the best over time.

I still enjoy my SUP and there are some days that a SUP is simply the best tool for the job based on conditions etc.

Let's hope SUP is able to stand in its own identity as a sport.

We have the Millers DW run here in SA. The wind blows almost every day for 6 months. The course is just shy of 12km.

The record in a surfski is 36 minutes. The record on a 14 foot SUP is 45 minutes. Both records by world class paddlers.

So yes, there is a speed difference but it is a lot the paddler. When I do it in my Ski I get beaten by SUP I'm not elite on either a SUP or in a ski.

Unofficially the foil is just as fast as the ski and with more practice will beat it....

Viewing from Tapatalk has been problematic. It refuses to log in. All the other forums work. I just kept trying everything and eventually something worked. Not sure who else uses Tapatalk.

They tried to find a story that would have a hot girl hardly dressed for an entire movie while making it mildly entertaining.
Job done!

I've had shoulder surgery as well as broken collarbones four times been through my share of rehab, prehab and every other kind of hab.
Let me say this, paddle blade size does make a difference but I would like for you to consider this. Time off the water in each day far outweighs time on the water so how we treat our shoulders when not paddling is just as important if not more so than when paddling.
Shoulder pain caused by an overuse injury is usually exacerbated by poor posture in other spheres of life like computer work, TV watching, reading books and general life. Poor posture and incorrect body alignment makes any shoulder issue worse or last longer.
Spend the time doing remedial exercises and ensuring your posture etc. Is correct. Get the book pain free by Pete Esgoscue and follow his instructions on how to get the body aligned once more.
We tend to treat our bodies like separate bits, if one bit hurts we try and treat that bit but the body is a connected system and should be treated as such.
Good luck.

I've fractured my ribs twice in less than a year SUP surfing. Both times were just weird accidents.
I'm going to invest in a Gooru and minimise the chances of a third break.

SUP General / Re: The SUP Crossing - Chris Bertish

So the focus of the trip which you are completely missing is to raise the equivalent of 1.5 million dollars for the smile foundation.
Chris is South African and while Americans cry about Trump we have millions of children that don't have food to eat.
This trip is to raise money to feed those kids.
So please STOP changing the focus to arbitrary rubbish and focus in the goal, putting food in the mouths of starving children.

I would also love a comparison between the 2016 maliko and the 2017.

Very interesting. I was on a dw the other day, and although I could see what you're talking about I couldn't make it happen.
Your illustration makes a lot of sense however it will take practice, practice, practice.

I use the app although I have synced my TomTom account with Endomondo. It is a very cool app. What would be nice is the social aspect because as you friend people on the app you can see the training other people are doing.
Using an app has also made me conscious of how much (or little) I train.

I had this condition. Started toe running, barefoot running, minimalist running. Known by many names. Sorted that out and it has never come back.
Get the feet strong and nimble.
When the doc told me to do this I thought he'd lost his marbles.
Well it worked and seems there have been studies done that back this thing up.
Do some Google.
