i've flown down there with a few differrent airlines now....AA, spirit, copa, and taca. copa and taca are definitely the best. AA i flew down with a 7'11x29.5 and had no issues bringing it....but it did cost me $150 for one way, which is insanity. In november flew copa and again no problems and i think it was $75 each way? i actually left a board there that i'm hoping to sell next time i go down since short SUPs are so hard to find there....just not sure if i could find a sup surfer to sell it too, haha.

the one thing i'll say is i avoid Spirit air like the black plague. Their flights all connect through FLL and are red eyes and are always so disorganized. i used them a few times and after problem after problem i vowed to never fly them again. last time they cancelled the flight and told me i couldnt fly out (from my layover) for another 48 hours as they only fly to nica every two days. they gave me a $7 meal voucer for my troubles, yes, $7. with all the extras they charge you for (bags, carry ons, SEATS?!) they are no cheaper then anyone else. and their customer service if something happens is nearly non existant. i've started sticking strictly to the south american airlines like Copa and Taca; they're so much better. Never had a problem, the price includes two checked bags, booze included on the flight. always a breeze and worth the extra $50-100 every time imo.

I am thinking about a trip to Central A. in late April/May.

When are you thinking of going Wet? If it matches up maybe we could snag a few together.

I am thinking Nica. Iguana or Santana and have easy access to Panga Drops. Although I have potential connects in CR. Working all of it out now.

I will be bringing 2 SUP's and probably rent a surfboard if I am in the mood.

i also may be down in nica in april. if you guys are going make sure you post up here it would be rad to meet some zoners down there for a session. april/may in nica the winds arent too bad; the super strong offshores are the worst in jan/feb. april is crazy hot down there and dry. you won't see any rain. you won't have any problems bringing a board through the managua airport; the only planes in nica that wont fly with a SUP are the ones out to the corn islands but theres no surf out there anyways.
Panga drops is a great SUP wave but it's really the only wave along that beach thats suppable imo. unless you're kai lenny you're not gonna be surfing colorados and even he would have problems keeping up his speed on a sup with how fast that wave is. not really a sup wave at all. panga is sick tho.
one tip i'll give you, is don't count out northern nicaragua. way less tourists, and way less people in the water. chances of you having the beach to yourself is pretty good, and really cheap boat trips. heres a couple shots of me in northern nica at the end of november when i was down

isnt zane under 150lbs and like 5'8"? i mean if you're that small your ability to ride those boards will obviously be increased. step that up to my height and weight, and the board would be like 7'5"x26" ... which there is still no way i could stand on it  ;D :D

anyone else notice that first surfer paddling for the shoulder, then goes to duck dive and shoots his board out behind him? da fuq

thank you for the info! i fired an email off to Epic just to check but i'm always interested in trying local shapes too.
if anyone wanted to point me in the right direction of some SUP friendly breaks let me know. i was just planning on hitting up the regular spots on the south end of town (tables, etc). never been down there before. if anyone is local and wants to surf with a canadian that's going to be mega-stoked shoot me a pm, cheers!

focus torpedo 8' and 8'4. got one, hated it, dinged so easily its like it was paper mache.....stupidly bought another one and sold the one i had ....same scenerio and hated it. had to sell it off....lost $400 for riding it three times. had a huge paddle ding from my second session ever on it and didnt even remember hitting it. piece of chinese junk.

had a L41 and put prob 40-50 session on it and he barely even has marks on the rail from the paddle. the focus was a POS

Wetstuff thanks for the link i didn't find that one in my google searches. i called Sobe and they got a 8'5x28 as their smallest which would probably work for me as well. now just trying to convince my gf to let me leave tampa for a day and head over.

if any zoners live over that way and want to meet up for a surf session let me know

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Florida SUP surfing help
January 23, 2014, 10:13:19 AM
hey everyone, hoping some Florida locals here can point me in the right direction. Looks like i'll be down to Florida at the end of Feb for 5 days, but will be staying in Tampa. I'd love to be able to sneak away for a day and catch some surf if the Atlantic was doing anything at all while i was there. a couple questions....

From Tampa is my closest and easiest place to go hit up surf Cocoa Beach?
Does anyone know if there are any SUP rentals there, perferably something in the shorter performance range so i can surf some waves? If i'm only going to go for potentially one session, it's not worth it $ wise to bring mine on the airplane.
any help would be appreciated. Cheers!

I just got back from Bocas del Toro in Panama. Point breaks and reef breaks everywhere, lefts, rights, beach breaks too. I surfed every day, a 10 min paddle from my B&B on a beautiful point break that was maybe 6-7 foot and I was the only surfer. Literally, I had to convince another guy to join me because I was lonely.

Tons of breaks, lots of options (easily 50 different breaks within $2 boat ride), pretty easy to find a completely empty break, especially for a SUP.

other big advantage is there's TONS to do for a non surfer, lots to explore on the islands.

big negative: no quality rental boards. I was riding an 11'6" Laird. Bring your own gear...

another option is to perhaps bring a board, and line up a buyer before you go, as it's difficult for shops to get boards in.

I was there 4 years ago after an injury so i wasnt surfing but wondered how it was. the only waves i ever saw were at red frog beach and it was small and looked like florida on a normal day. what island did you stay on, just in town on Colon?
I know you gotta take the puddle jumper plane from PTY so i wonder if there would be restrictions on bringing a board since it's so big.
i had a good time there tho and partied my face off. lots of south american girls were around  :o 8)

is there a break there on the north side of town at the beach and it's called 'castles'? i remember surfing a beach there one day and we had some super fun surf. went out to the islands as a kook and got my ass handed to me in a big rogue wave that took me into the reef hahaha

a buddy had one that said the shape was good and it flew down the line however the construction on the standard models was cheap and dinged easily, but who knows. their carbon models look fantastic

really like the look of these. Thinking about getting the smaller one for those super choppy windy days that still has surf. price is on point. boradworks seem to be awesome with their pricing compared to other brands and the boards i've personally seen don't seem any less quality. if anyone has ridden one of these please post a review!

I was tutored that until you have been yelled at, been told to f--- off . . . you haven't really graduated to intermediate SUS status.  I am sure your experience was painful but welcome to sophomore year.

As a parent, of 3 young kids, you realize that your only job is to acculturate your children to train them to do everything that is NOT instinctive, or emotional.  They will attend 15 to 20 years of school to learn the rules, to be honest and to use reason over rage.

Then we go and surf with wild, untrained pit-bulls.  These animals should be put down.  Who were their parents?

This is one of my favorite shots capturing the stink wafting from one such emotional beast.

hahahaha this picture is amazing. thank u for posting

Was the guy that yelled at you named Shannon with an all red wetsuit? If so report it to the police. He already has a restraining order against him with another local stand up guy.

you'd be grumpy if you had a girls name too.
