Title: Stand Up RSS Feeds
Post by: MichaelF on July 30, 2007, 01:46:37 PM
Here are some RSS Feeds that I have found and plugged into a tab in netvibes.com

I would suggest that keep a listing of these and update.  Blogs / online are the major growth vehicle of this sport.  Not to take down Laird at all - these blogs are the future and my prediction will do more for the future of the sport than laird in the next five years.

I have been a loyal netvibes.com user for years but Google, yahoo all have the same features.  I like the ability to move around tabs.  It is my daily newspaper.

here is my Sup daily read:

Click on the following link to install the tab:

Install Tab "Stand Up Surfing" (16 Modules)

or copy and paste the following link in your browser:

Also if you are interested in learning more about RSS feeds and how to use them:
an excellent video - they do not mention netvibes...

http://blip.tv/file/205570/

I would also suggest to all of the board builders and resellers within this space - USE RSS - Keep us coming for news and updates - several are doing it very well but others are not using it and they are loosing out on daily branding.

If you wonder why ad revenue for newspapers/magazines is going down it is because most would rather subscribe to an RSS feed that buy a magazine.  Do i want to go out an buy StandUpMagazine that comes out once a month with stale news and events or would I prefer to read paddlesurf.net etc.

One word of caution on RSS feeders is that they can be addictive.

Great list that you put together!

These Ajax based desktop style programs are pretty amazing, and are very helpful.

Here is a list I grabbed.  I have used only a few, also favoring netvibes.

Eskobo
favoor
Google
Goowy
Microsoft Live
Netvibes
Pageflakes
Protopage
Zoozio

One note:  Some of these allow outside developer "modules" or similar, which pose a security risk.  No problem if you are just news viewing, but consider not using email on those that offer it, or storing any info on notes, etc that you would not readily share.

I updated the listings of RSS feeds that I have on stand up with netvibes.com.  In order to get the links live you will have to accept the feed in netvibes.

On the blogging content creation side the winner is clearly John Ashley from paddlesurf.net

The Gongsup team in france http://www.gongsup.com/ RSS feed is continually updated, with latest pictures etc. and they are doing a great job of creating brand by using their RSS.

if there are other stand up blogs please post them.

Nice plug Ashley.  At least put it in a link so I don't have to do so much work to get there.....

Mike,

Getting the RSS up on http://www.international-waterman.com/ would be pretty quick.  Iwaterman would be a perfect application for RSS.

It turns a onetime visitor into daily visitor.  When you post, then they come. Take a look at http://surfysurfy.blogspot.com/ the blog by JP from Moonlight Glassing in Carlsbad.

he posts daily pictures of the outrageously beautiful boards he paints and glasses, pulling board lovers back to his site.  He even uses his blog as a means to sell boards.

RSS is the most powerful tool available to content creators/ websites looking to build community and brand.

Pono Bill gets to play all the time because of his success as a marketing genius. He has a pretty good article on RSS you may be interested in. No surprise the Pono blog has gotten so popular.

Yes, I have been quite impressed with your brother.  I call genius working with the internet and not against.

The golden rule online is whoever has the traffic wins.  RSS turns a one time visitor into a return visitor.  Instead of forcing a visitor to come to your site, you tell then when to come.

I visited JP's blog from Moonlight Glassing two months ago - http://surfysurfy.blogspot.com/ and have become an active reader.   I go back with every post because I love looking at the incredible board that he glasses.  The artwork is spectacular, I now have longboard being glassed with JP and he has become a friend.

Commit to RSS for your business and it will change your world.

Hi Michael,

I have an OT Q for you.  I use RSS and have since 2005 or so.  At that point less than 2% of frequent internet users were doing so.  I had heard that the number had actually gone down in 2006, but have not heard any recent stats.  So my Q, how many internet users do you think now actually use feed readers?  Has there been a recent uptake among the general users, or is this still the darling of blog readers and enterprise types?

Regardless of the answer, thanks for the interesting post!

Most importantly, thanks for helping me find this photo (I'll go left):

I have started to use RSS feeds since seeing a previous post in this thread. And some of what I get is useful and some is not. I have filtered out some of the useless and am continuing to try.
If it were not free, I would not be getting my money's worth so far.  ???

Rand,

Good point on low internet penetration on RSS, it think that it entirely depends on what group of users we are talking about.  Early adopters are addicted and could think of no other way to get news.  Certainly RSS is higher than 2%, i have seen 4% used but I am sure that most users are not sure that they are subscribing to a feed when they use their myyahoo or mygoogle buttons.  I am sure that there is a huge uptake but most are not aware of what they are actually doing.

I am going to looking to getting some data on usage.  For instance I know that wall street is now valuing RSS subscibers as they used to email subscibers.  I am not sure what the cash value on RSS subscibers Vs email but TravelZoo.com has an approx $10 value for each email subsciber and have heard of blogs using similar metrics.

No I do not think that it is just for blog readers etc. and high end users but I am still amazed at some of the most with it people online that are clueless on how to place RSS into their site.  This is changing.  Almost every major website breaks down their different categories with different RSS feeds for instance look at surfline http://www.surfline.com/rss/

Right now I am a high end RSS user and I get that I am not the norm.  On a normal day I will pull 2 or 3 feeds into netvibes and get rid of one of two.  This is my daily bread and just like a newspapers, I create my own sections or tabs that are 100% customized.   I was never a big fan of the old RSS readers but they mygoogle myyahoo netvibes tools are really robust and are making this much easier.

Look at http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/09/19/business-20-the-final-cover/ Funny that techcruch.com is lamenting the loss of Business 2.0 when techcrunch likely killed it.  I see this as only a start of the peril facing many magazines and yes RSS is a major part of this.

a rss reader is your window on the world that you create, just like a garden, you can plant, trim or weed what you like.  I am sure that if you stick with it, you will find RSS feeds that are core to you interests and some that are not.

Cool stuff Michael,

I, like you, spend a good deal of time thinking about how different types of users use the internet and what their online experience is.  Same from the business end.

If you do find some current stats, I think that would be a very cool piece of info (maybe even a nice mag article).  As with all cool new technology, there is a critical uptake period.  I think the hesitancy that both users and businesses may have is, is it worth my time yet?  Who can I get good info from?  Who can I reach?  The answers may be mixed depending on the users or type of business.

From a site stats side of things, metrics can seperate out feed readers by user IP (although most analysis programs don't do it stock), so it would not need to be user reported (I completely agree that many RSS users will not know that they are using feeds or RSS by those names).

Very cool stuff!

Nice module on Netvibes.  Any chance you can export an opml file so I can import into my RSS reader?

Andy,

Just like in field of dream if you build it they will come - when you post, i have you pegged into my reader and when you post worthwhile content I will be on your site.

The better your post the more interest that we will all have.  When Cammar posts on http://mauisurfreport.blogspot.com/ I don't miss it.

This is how to use RSS - It is not a one time deal with GongSup - they create and share daily

Jayr,

Since you mention StandUpPaddleSurf.net - Evan has been on fire the last month with his blogging, videos and interviews.  Great content and every post is worthy of reading.   Thanks Evan.

I was At the September www.sdwaterman.com event in La Jolla with John Ashley from paddlesurf.net and it was a parade of fellow Stand up surfers thanking him for his blog this summer.  John had gotten busy during the first part of September and there was a chorus of "John, when is your next post coming".  To roughly quote John, "I just started this blog to have fun with this summer, had no idea now much I would get into it and how passionate the readers would get"

I think we are going to give Evan the edge during September and Summer '07 to John.

Keep em coming

updated the feeds

MichaelF! You're a cruel puppet master pitting Evan and I against each other!

Evan don't buy it- remember, "United we stand..." let's go old school, union style on these guys and don't post ANYTHING until they meet our demands! Although, I'm not sure what those are yet...

See you in the water MF!

John to quote paddlesurf.net this morning - It's a sickness. I think we are all on the same trip with you.

If you guys keep up with Paddlesurf.net and Standuppaddlesurf.net you may well become the Imelda Marcos of stand up paddlers and Evan will get the most boards ridden/ Tommy Lee Award.

John remember it took imelda years to get here, you are only one year.

MichaelF - Pretty funny.  I'd like to be the Imelda of SUP but will settle for Tommy.

I hope to get on some new boards soon.
