Howzit all-
I'm not sure if this topic was touched on before, but I need to ask:
How do you store your boards? I mean mounting, rigging, storing etc...
I've heard that some guy's use pulley systems to raise their boards/canoes. I'm looking for ideas as I am running out of room in my small lanai/patio area. I even have boards on the ground and my regular surfboards in my bedroom. As you can see I am using J hooks for my big stuff. My roof /ceiling is approx. 15ft so attempting to put the boards/OC1 up and take them down by hand is out of the question.
Show some pics with you ideas if you can...I'm sure there are others with this question in mind.

I think most are in the same situation. Until I cleaned up this weekend, I had 3 board standing on end, racked along the garage wall, 2 surf boards laying on the table on the outside patio and my 14' Excursion on sawhorses under the back sunshade, where it still sits.
The 14' and up boards are usually the biggest issue for people.

I have a rack for my 20+ demo boards to stand vertical in, and the 80+ boards in inventory are in boxes standing on end. This is of course in my warehouse for my store. ;D

I have all my boards hanging.. I made myself these hanging roller racks.
I just lift the nose onto the first one and walk the board forward till the nose rests on the second roller.. It workd great.

Nice set up DJ...what are those rollers made of? Are they 2 different sized PVC pipes with the bigger one wrapped with some kind of cushion?
That's a no non-sense, econimical and efficient set up...

I agree w/ DJ and the hanging system, looks like you have lots of room on the ceiling of your lanai (doesn't look that tall...) I'm in the process of creating a hanging system for multiple boards - will post pics when I'm done.

Not the recommended storage model, but until my deck extension gets built they live on a lower section of my roof... :P

Thanks.. You could just use PVC pipe cut slightly wider than your boards.. and then a larger size cardboard tube cut about a foot long.. That works fine.. I put some rubber matting around the cardboard for a little more paddling but it's not needed.

Built a rack on the side wall of the garage. The racks are at an angle so you still fit a car in on that side. They fit 3 SUPs and work well, as my truck fits under the racks by 3/4" (yes that close). Until that dream 4 car garage comes along this works. Here's an old pic but you get the idea.

I went vertical - you can do two boards this way (deck to deck) and for me it was more manageable. There was no clean 11" of space in the garage with the loft separating the room. Foam padding on the floor and behind the board keep it from getting bonked or scratched.

Make a u out of 2x4s and go overhead mounting to the rafters of the lanai. cheap easy functional.

I added on to my free standing shed. I dug posts, framed and roofed it. It was a fun project that took me a few days to do. I had to make sure that the width between the posts and the wall were at least 35 inches for sups. It works well.

Just built this rack setup for my sup. Metal closet rod ends and rod witha pvc roller system.

I like the 'hanging racks' but bamboo grows like a weed here so I put all our boards on Bamboo racks

don't have pics on this computer, but I set my board on two bicycle hooks, after modifying them with a pair of channel-locks to better match the contour of the rails. (screwed the hooks into the studs and then re-bent the curves on the hooks in place). This setup makes for easy racking and holds the board fairly close to the wall (fin out). Cheap and easy! i'll post some pics when I get home if anyone wants.

The white with blue stripes board is a Kahuna Creations skateboard. Alongside the board you will see 2 x Big Sticks also from Kahuna. This kit is for Street SUP.

The vertical rack is for the Bark 14, Laird 12 (Big Red aka teaching board), 11'6" Takyama and the Wingnut 11. The horizontal rack is miscellaneous windsurfing and surfboards with some kayak and Hobie Cat gear mixed in. Both racks are hand made and equipped with a crude but fairly effective locking system. This is nothing compared to the garage. I'll post the garage pics in the next day or so.

My setup is much like DJ's, but rigid and mounts the boards flush to the ceiling rather than against the wall. Had to be rigid because the boards and rack fit just above the garage door and behind a set of drop-down attic stairs and there is minimal clearance when everything is open. There is room above and next to the boards for paddles, PFDs (hanging from paddle to dry off in the pics) and other assorted gear.
Just used some scrap 2X4, shaped into brackets, bored a few holes for some PVC, mounted to studs, slipped in the PVC, and covered PVC with pipe insulation. Total cost was under $10. Not pretty but works great. The best part is that it uses space that is otherwise wasted in most garages.

Does anyone here live in an apartment, and not on ground level? I'm living part time in North Vancouver, in an apartment, second floor and don't have a lockable garage. I can store my board at work for now, which is a bit of a pain as I have to store it high which includes a 12' ladder climb with a 12'1" board. I am going to make a pulley system from the ceiling of my verandah to get my board upstairs as it doesn't fit in the stairwell or elevator. I'm just wondering if anyone out there has done a similar thing?

Built on the back of my Garage 20 feet long 5 feet wide and insulated . Ive got a F-16 v2 and a 12"6 bark in there now as well as these two Naish's in there.

Those are east indian swinging clubs. I have 1 , 2 , 3, 5, and 10 Lb set. I swing these daily and have completely rehabed my shoulders. I had major shoulder repair done last year and my shoulders are able to handle the riggors of Stand up Paddling.
These clubs will keep your shoulders in top shape. ALL stand up paddlers should be swinging these they are AWESOSME !!!! Check out Long time Stand Up Paddler Jack Gillen from Kona , Hawaii he came up with a routine for Sup Paddlers , Surfers and Canoe paddlers.

I purposed some Home Depot wall racks for the task that come with protective foam sleeves at $5 each ($10/board total). They have really worked out well and only stick out from the wall less than 16-inches. Paddles get stashed behind the boards and I have a convenient hanger for drying rubber.

I know a guy who didn't have any room in his house to store his boards except for the master bedroom. After he got his third board, his wife finally told him she wouldn't put up with it anymore. So he built a shed behind the garage and everything was great.
Then she started complaining that she couldn't sleep because it was too cold for her out there.

Here's the board rack I finished this weekend. I like that it's mobile and total cost was less than $100. The most expensive parts were the casters and the iron pipe for the "shelves". Also like that it's accessible from the sides -- makes it easy to access!

I use an overhead hoist. Harken hoist. So far worth every penny. The garage ceiling was the only spot I could find a 14 foot space.
I wheel my trailer in, attach the straps around the board, pull the board up to the ceiling, knot the rope off, put the trailer under the deck, poom done. Cam lock actually holds the rope.

I wish I had the headroom in my garage to do that. Still looking for the 12' space to do the job. It's still on the truck for now.

Killer set up. This is my favorite system for home storage. I have seen similar rack systems with wooden rods inside the pvc pipes that store 10 boards easily. You can fit a lot of boards in a small space.

Started by running the line through an eyebolt to a clamcleat and to another cleat to hold the excess line. Next I replaced the eyebolts with pulleys that I had lying around. Brought a third board so I added eyestraps and used webbing with a snap shackle at both ends. Now you can raise one board and snap the webbing around the board. Then lower the bar and lift a second board in place. Might try inserting a pulley inside the end of each bar to make ut easier yet.

There actually was a 13th Naish Glide 14' Javelin special edition wood model made, and I got it. Here it is in my new living room. Ceiling ht. is 17'-2" so any future 17' boards will fit upright.
OK, I know the board was photoshopped. So was the new living room. And the Steinway "D". I might get the special edition wood 17' Glide next.

That was my plan, but when I thought about it more I realized that higher up in the garage it can get to 100 degrees or more in the summer, so I guess that idea is out for me. I need to clear some wall space instead.

Similar idea to the rolling one.
1/2" galvanized pipe bases with 1/2" threaded pipe of preferred length with 1" PVC sleeve over it with a PVC threaded cap on the end screwed on so the PVC tube can spin on the galvanized pipe but not slide off the end.
The nice thing about the galvanized bases is that they easily unscrew from the wall and can be repositioned higher or lower once you find the sweet spots for the boards.
Verticle 2x4 rack for the long boards and smaller SUP's.
Some of the boards on the left side are prone boards.

Since I just learned how to re-size my photo's from Tom on another thread, let me add my set up from 2 years ago. My stepson welded up square stock for me which I covered in pipe insulation and capped the metal ends with rubber table foot covers. Added internal pipe with pins and clips in case I need to move them and adjust the height above ground.

I went to Home Depot bought some brackets and pipe insulation for $10. And my large suv still fits in the single car garage!

UDflyer--got any pics of the rack system without the board?
How long does that bracket extend outward from the wall? The only brackets I've seen at Home Depot are only 10" length, and I'm afraid that isn't deep enough to support a board.

Looks like the brackets stick out 15.5" and they hold my 12'6 board quite well without the chance of it falling forward. My board even has 6-7" rails.

That looks like the simplest rack system.
If not, I may have to go with the galvanized pipes as VIP did above.
Hey VIP--the screwed on PVC ends....is it screwed onto the 1/2" galvanized pipe? or onto the 1" PVC pipe?

I like that idea. I had a horizontal hanger in my basement but it's in a bad place. Having one on wheels would make life so much easier, I'll have to build one. Then I can toss all of the water craft on it and shove it over to the side.

I've been rearranging my gear (two kayaks, two windsurfing boards and a Naish Glide, with a Naish Nalu on the way soon). I started hanging it from the ceiling but changed it to a rolling rack. It's just easier to get to now.

Currently...though only very temporary since we'll be adding some more boards....and I use this space (built in the 1800's) for home workouts.
Custom rack made out of foam blocks! ;D Actually, stay tuned. You folks have given me some great ideas. We have another building on the property that will be converted to a SUP shack.

So now that our second board arrived, it was time to find a place for it.

I decided to make the shelf on my rack wider to accommodate the two boards and added additional support.

The rack up against the wall, the Alana goes on first and a bungie cord is attached to the carry handle.

Wow, I thought I was careful with my SUPs until I saw some of these magnificent storage options. Mine just sit on the floor of the garage and lean against the wall. Red Paddle Co 10'6" inflatable doesn't even have any padding under it...
