Title: Maui's Rising
Post by: Admin on December 05, 2009, 03:56:37 PM
If this swell is going to meet expectations, we may be in for a once in 50 year event.  Even the thought that that might occur has the antipation level bumped up pretty high on Maui.  Stick your camera in the car and let's see if we can't snap off some shots that might capture a bit of this epic surf as it unfolds, so we can share it with those who can't be here.

The last two days brought the best surfable waves of the year for us, but this morning, things had already stepped up a notch.  Here are some run up photos from today.

I am hoping to get more as this gets bigger.  It was beautiful to see yesterday, and big by all normal standards, but not yet XL, and not really GIANT like they are calling for.

We did hear rumor that there will be an attempt to SUP the biggest Peahi yet on Monday or Tuesday, so...

I went down to have a look this morning.  So beautiful!  No wind at all.  One SUP guy on his way East towards Peahi.  We should see some good pics from this.  Sounds like the bluff is already jammed with long lenses.

Any idea who the guy is?

BTW, NW Hawaii station 51001 is showing 19' by 16 seconds at 9AM HST.   Word from the big wave guys is they're looking for 20 feet by 19 seconds in order for the swell to reach "giant" status.  So far it's just massive.   ;)

Not really.  The only cams are too far West, and there is some blocking going on there from West Maui, so...

Still, you can see some sets over there, though.

Glenn James added this note to his forecas a few minutes ago:

Note: Maui County life guards were reporting 40-45 foot wave faces near Jaws surf break at mid-morning Monday!

I saw Bill at Peahi, nice talking to him.

Here's a couple shots, followed by a link to my flickr set (cherry picked)...  some big 30' face bombs in there, but not quite (yet?) what we were hearing... still early though!

Here's my set slideshow:

Wow! Nice shots, looks crazy out there with all the skis and copters.

Yeah, there were 3 helicopters, 14 jetski/surfers in the lineup, 14 off to the side, 3-4 support boats, an ultralight, and a partridge in a keawe tree.

I got a lot of nice shots, didn't look immense, but respectable. I'm pretty sure I've seen Peahi break bigger, but maybe I'm just being jaded.

Zillions of people jamming into everyplace on the north shore you could get a glimpse of a wave. Glad I took my dirt bike to the overlook.

I need to sort through the shots, but here's a fun one of Laird and I think Dan (I forget his last name). Laird's saying, "Okay, I'll go left"

Canon 5D Mark II Slow Motion + Jaws ( Peahi ) 12-7-09 (http://vimeo.com/8050122)

Aloha all, just wanted to post a little footage from Jaws today...These waves are insanely huge and I have so much respect for the surfers that have the guts to do this as well as the jet ski operators that are tremendously talented in their own right, many of them big wave riders as well..

Anyhow, I live a couple of miles from Jaws on W.Kuiaha in a little town called Haiku. At night I can hear these monsters breaking, they sound like thunder...

Tech :
Canon 5D Mark II
Canon 70-300 USM @ 300mm
Zoom H4n & Redhead windscreen for faint ocean sounds
Premiere CS4

hope you all enjoy this little teaser.. there's more to come later, it's still going off !, and tomorrow is supposed to be huge as well.. Going to try to get the morning light..

One of the Jaws pioneers is Laird Hamilton. His wife Gabrielle Reece had this to say on his blog today..

"12-7-09 Swell Update from Laird

Gabby:
12-7-09
3:50 Hawaii Time

I just spoke to Laird around 3pm Hawaii time (5pm PST) from Maui.  He said they had a good morning and that his board and body were feeling good.  They went out fairly early, and it had not gotten too crowded yet.  The boys (Dave Kalama, Terry Chun, Derrick Doerner and others) came in for gas fuel and food fuel for lunch.  By then a front had come in and “chop sueyed” the waves.  Laird then proceeded to watch some of the action from the cliff side.  He said a lot of skis went up on to the rocks along with some boards.  He felt like there may have been several new comers who were having to work it all out.

I’m on Kauai and Kings reef began to break ever so slightly.  The ocean floor by this reef is so deep that you don’t even see Kings unless it’s starting to be Hawaiian 25 ft (that’s double in the front).

The boys are going to sit tight on Maui and then make their plan for tomorrow.  As most of you know the swell hits Kauai first, then Oahu (which is having a bit of rain and some major water surging), Maui and so on.  Once they get a beat on the conditions (wind, swell) they will most likely decide to continue to stay on Maui and surf Peah’i (aka Jaws) tomorrow.  If I hear anything of interest I will let you all know."

The waves sound bigger tonight, probably just the wind direction, but some of the thumps are so hard I can feel it in my chest. Pono Rd. where I live is about a mile from Peahi as the crow flies.

I didn't go shoot today--went looking for surf instead. The best spot I looked at was the harbor, but it was solid people. Hoped for wrap in Kehei, but nada--same everywhere else--just either knee high or completely exploded to bits. wound up paddling from Launiopoko to the end of Lahina and back, surfing all the little breaks. Lost a pair of Maui Jims which made it a $300 day. Damn.

This thread demonstrates the best thing about the internet age. While I have stood on the cliffs at Peahi in the summer and imagined 40 foot waves rolling in and the water teaming with the world's best watermen, I will probably never time a trip to Maui to see it actually happen. But, through the majic of the internet it's like I am hanging out there with friends on one of the best days/weeks seen in decades. Thanks Standupzone and all the zoners on Maui for sharing the Aloha stoke.

And let me agree with Bill, as I watch each video I find my legs tensing up under my desk trying to make my virtual surfboard go right to safety but then these guys cut back left and I'm screaming inside my head: "No, go right, get out of there." I'm lovin' it. Keep 'em coming.

Having lived in the extreme heli-skiing and extreme mountaineering arena in Alaska, I'm only wondering how soon the tow-in scene will go the way of these other sports and we start seeing locals guide rich clients into massive surf?  Newbie climbers pay about $80,000 to get to the summit of Everest and intermediate skiers are throwing down $1000/day for heli-guides to take them on extreme "fall you can die" runs in the Chugach Mountains.

How much are clients willing to pay to get towed into some mackers???  My guess is big bucks.   Maybe it's already happening?

I have seen Peahi so many times, used to live on Ulumalu and drive down there all the time, so kind of not easily impressed... NEVER seen a wave ripped like that Ian Walsh wave, I actually got chicken skin, got nervous for him, watching him carve and surfing SO close to the pit. That was incerdible!!! RIght on for the local boys, not to be out done by anyone on home turf.

Bill, I agree, does not look like the biggest. I actually have a day on home vid which I think may be that day, it was thanksgiving day, believe it was 97. HUGE. I remember Rush Randle on the cliff, saying "it's out of my league" and Lopez only took a few. Laird on the other hand..........

Watching some of these vids makes you realize exactly how hard stand up would be on a wave like Peahi.  These guys are sketch setting a rail on tiny little tow boards with straps, let alone the full volume stand up boards it would take to paddle in to these beasts.  Then there are the crazy speed bumps, etc.  It will be great to see when it happens on a full sized Peahi day.  The carnage should be unreal!!

Tasty. Here's a little robbie Nash at Ho'okipa from last Monday:

And yeah, he was honoring the ten man rule--most folks were sitting on the bluff.

Incidentally, what was the deal with towing in a SUP? That was kinda weird.

NICE, who got swallowed at 1:35? :o

Love how the boats and skis sit right on the edge of the break, that must be an awesome spot to feel the size.  Who pulled off that last tube, beauty!!

I don't know who the guy was that got woofed at 1:35, but I think that was the guy Dave Kalama was talking about in the lineup this morning, I got one shot just as he got chopped, but you can barely see what's happening. I was too busy staring at him thinking "what is he DOING?" to shoot a series. He was standing straight up, looking very casual. I don't think he saw the lip coming--pure guillotine.  I think this may be the one.

And the result. Now that I look at these I'm not sure they're the ones. I think all I got of Mr. Guillotine is a slam shot.

Wow, and oooof. That run back through the washing machine was probably just the only visible one, I bet a lot of these folks spent some time in the spin cycle.

And yeah, Kai Lenny is an amazing kid, saw him windsurfing yesterday in the wicked Kona conditions at Hookipa. Kid rips at everything.
