Title: Axis: hps vs png?
Post by: MikeLima on July 14, 2022, 09:36:59 AM
I’m having fun thinking about what for now is a hypothetical axis quiver, and I’m not clear on the difference between HPS and PNG. They are both sort of high aspect and thin. Any thoughts?

PNG stands for pump and glide. These will be happy at a slower speed and oddly enough pump and glide really well.

HPS stands for high performance speed. These will be happy at a higher top speed and have a worse low end oddly enough.

I have found the ART series incredibly versatile with the right tails.
Best of both worlds?  (I haven't personally ridden PNG nor HPS)

I started on PNG 1150, then PNG 910. Now using HPS 1050 & 930, and ART 999. The latter are all faster with more glide than the PNGs. Also easier to control in the choppy, gusty conditions I wing in.

I find the HPS easier to learn to gybe because they carry speed through the turn. I found the PNGs needed to be almost nursed through to stay on foil.

I also find both PNGs more prone to over foiling on gusts.

Hope that helps.

I'm a 70kg just hitting intermediate level.

The PNG's have really low stall speed and that's about the only advantage I could see over the HPS.
The 1010 would fly on a 8 knots day. They are forgiving for fuck-ups when you try to learn and stay
with the power of the bump.

Once I turned on the speed, the foil really sucked, feels like elephant in the water, they have
a thicker leading edge. Good for learning to DW according to my friend, he uses the 1150 quite
successfully for that purpose.

Ok, so the png range is thicker, like bsc but higher aspect pumping. I’ve been kind of thinking about kind of going up in size from art 899 by going to hps 880 to bsc 8-something, so you keep agility by keeping a similar span. Idk. I’ve got the kujiras so for now just capping the ends with 899 and 1150 for docks.

Interestingly, the difference in average top speed in a session between the PNG 1010 and the 980 HPS has been only 2 MPH. If they were exactly the same surface area the difference would be even less (The 980 is a little smaller).

The HPS is more controllable at top speed and has faster acceleration but takes noticeably more board speed to get going.

A friend recently learned on my old 1010 pretty quickly, don't think the HPS 980 would have worked so well.

I prone and wing on the PNG 910b and it's slow but really forgiving and gets up in very little wind at my 140lbs. As was said, you can blow a jibe and slow down and almost stop and it'll still be on foil. I'm playing with tails to see if I can sppee it a bit butnif you're learning it's great and it's an easy prone foil too I hear.
