Title: Reading Quanta is hazardous to productivity
Post by: PonoBill on January 01, 2021, 08:00:21 AM
I enjoy Quanta magazine--a bit too much perhaps. I have stuff to do this morning, but I saw this article on Pocket and took a look at it (holy shit, who knew mathematicians could look like that??) https://getpocket.com/explore/item/a-mathematician-who-decodes-the-patterns-stamped-out-by-life?utm_source=pocket-newtab

My new crush referenced a theory by Allan Turing (Another hero) that I had never heard of, and that led to this: https://www.quantamagazine.org/ancient-turing-pattern-builds-feathers-hair-and-now-shark-skin-20190102/ which sucked me in instantly since I'm interested in why sharks have denticles instead of smooth skin, which is (of course) why my foils look like they've been fed into a food processor.

That led here: https://www.quantamagazine.org/biologists-home-in-on-turing-patterns-20130325/ and now it's 7:58 AM and getting up at 6:00 AM to write has been pissed away. Oh well.

At least you're being productive--in the medical sense.
