I decided since there are not that many good places to foil in my neighborhood here in solana Beach that I needed to dust off the Foote 10'4". Holy shit, I suck at surfing. Not only did I struggle to turn and do anything but go more or less straight, I buried the nose, fell off the back, missed waves, stood in the wrong place, and generally sucked out loud as if I'd never done this sport.
I know foiling had screwed me up for surfing, but I never thought it would be this bad. I even fell climbing up the rocks to the pathway at Torrey Pines beach park, and slid down my board like that little guy on Laugh In 50 years or so ago. Hopeless. I'm going to have to work on this. Sad.

Kai doesn't seem to have any problems switching his watercraft???

Yeah me too was off my board. For a while moved to the mountains very little time to surf. My last session sounded just like yours minus the fall on the rocks. But with the added indignity of a polite teenager who offered to carry my board up the slope at terra mar north

It’s cool, they make these things you can attach to the bottom now and it’ll fix it.

Not only did people offer, when I refused they took it from me and carried it up. Sheesh. I felt like a little old lady being helped across the street.

Did you move down here to San Diego?

Since almost exclusively sup surfing the past 8 years I now suck at prone surfing on a short board. When I stand up it feels like I’m standing on a wafer. Kind of a Bummer.

Just for the winter--can't go to Maui

I noticed that. WTF? What does he have that I don't other than fitness, youth, balance, skill, experience, attitude...

ha ha... great post Pono!
Isn't it totally awesome to be clueless old guy?
When that happens to me, I just look at my feet and play the part ;D
With me it isn't the foil thing.... it's the wetsuit.
These days I become a total kook once I don a full suit.... so, I went to Florida ;D ;D

Good plan. So far I'm wearing more rubber in SoCal than I do in Hood river. It was 42 this morning--grey and foggy.

THIS IS WHAT I'M SAYING! You Oregon guys like to make fun of us, but it's cold here.

Great post.
I'm sort of Mid-life (I hope), but it just seems like every year that goes by, the less muscle memory I have. Age makes things that were once easy hard.
I have been mostly prone surfing the last couple of years, I just like the simplicity and my kids are doing it. Last year I decided to spend a few days SUSing and damn, the waiting for wave and paddling for waves part was rough. Once on the wave I felt pretty comfortable, except the paddle was always in the way.

Hey Pono, maybe that 10'4 is too big for a slim guy like you. As soon as the swell and tides align, I'll get you out on my 9'6 145lt Sunova here at the cliffs.

At 11:00 am on Christmas day, it was 55 degrees at Hampton Beach NH but only 45 at Cocoa Beach Florida.

Especially at Torrey Pines where you usually get the stiff offshores for the dawn patrol too. Changing in and out of a wetsuit can be rough.
