Title: New King's - foil SURF machines Board
Post by: Califoilia on November 08, 2020, 11:49:51 AM
Having read so many of Dwight (DW)'s post wrt board shaping, I was more than intrigued and interested in getting on one of them, and went to his site to see about ordering one. When I saw he had "orders suspended" there, I PM'd him here, and unfortunately, he informed me that he's only "making 5’1 SUPs, but nothing bigger", and had no plans on making anything bigger in the near future...and to not wait for him. :(

So with what he talked about here, and on is website, I took those concepts to Dave Daum at King's who's shaping my boards now, and worked with him to try to get something similar (but not exactly in respect to Dwight and his boards). After several hours on the computer with me trying to communicate the direction that Dwight was taking things, we came up with what I thought looked great on the computer, but that had me more than a bit worried when it came off the CNC machine.

What seemed like enough bottom on the screen, suddenly looked too small, with way too much chine to the rails. :o

Everyone - and I mean everyone - who saw it said it was going to be tippier than hell...and honestly, while I never said it, I feared the same thing silently. Several even told me that I should just buy the unglassed foam from Dave and start over, instead of wasting anymore money on it having him finish it, and then not being able to stand on it...much less paddle it. Well, being stubborn (or really more so not wanting to bruise my ego...lol), I just had him proceed on with it, and so glad that I did!

Turned out to not be at all tippy, it paddles great, and is incredible in the air with how easy it is to throw around, and so controllable, because now the slightest input has it responding immediately to it; that I'm able to drop into big late drops that I'd never even think about turning into with any of my other boards.

I'll not share all of Dwight's secrets here (you'll have to go to his website to find them ;) :D ), but I will share that flat bottoms replacing all of the concave bottoms that seem to be so prevalent with so many of the foil boards out there (and on all of my previous boards) is a game changer.

Thanks to "Dwight (DW) (https://www.supsurfmachines.com/)" for putting the ideas into my head, and to Dave Daum at King's Paddle Sports (https://www.kingspaddlesports.com/collections/foils/products/simmons-foil-board?variant=32641788215432) for giving me the leeway to "shape" (I have no computer design skills) what has turned out to be the most incredible SUP foil board I've ever ridden...and I've ridden, tested, demoed at LOT.

Stoked to say the least,
Sano

EDIT to add: 5'7"x28"x105 liters

Great looking board. I'm actually suprised to hear you say that it is stable. I would think it to be way tippy with the majority of the rails hacked off like that. And 105 L seems alot for a board that size with those bevels. But I'm glad it's working out for you. It would also be a great wing board, but I know you've been down that road already. Twice.

Glad it worked out for you and DD:) Nothing like feeling awkward in the line-up foiling with your barber who gave you a haircut you didn't like...... Speaking of haircuts....you're catching up to Fabio dude! ;)

Beautiful board!  Interestingly, the Kalama E2 has a shallower side chines than the E1 though not extended into the center as far as yours.  Glad it worked out well!

Dude, this is rad. I saw this on social media but these shots make it all make sense.

How long is it?

Thanks, and yep, I gotta say I'm as surprised as anyone that it's as stable as it is. Phew! :P

I'm thinking that w/ the 105 liters and my 187 lbs, the board is pretty much all in the water w/ the exception of 6-10" of the nose, and that I stand/paddle w/ both feet pretty much on the centerline (front foot in the strap)...as a result, it has the most all of the rails/foam in the water, w/ equals amounts of and most all of it outside my feet, so there's really nothing there to be unstable (or tippy) on.

Ha! That was also in the back of my head the whole time the tippy-ness fears were running through my head...that if it didn't work out in the surf, I should be able to sell it pretty easy to someone looking for a nice wing board. Since yes, that certainly wasn't going to be me again trying it...for a third time.  ::) :o :)

Hahaha...thanks TD! Yep, both my grandpops were bald, and since I heard it skips a generation...figured I better be really careful with cutting it, just in case it don't grow back again. ;) :D

Thank you.

Dwight mentions Kalama in his discussion on his website, and Dave's boards were also looked at and taken into consideration in this one's design. But it was really only as a confirmation about the use of flat bottoms really, most all of the other stuff with the board were more DW boards influenced.

Thanks CB. It's 5'7"x28"x5.125" @ 105 liters. Come on down and try it sometime. 8)

Great looking board. I love my Flying Dutchman board for wingfoiling, but it's not really intended for surf, and it's proving to be a bit of a handful in chop or the rebound waves at SanO. I might need to try something different.

Part of the problem is my crappy geezer balance--it gets a little worse every year.

I bet SanoSlatch knows where a extra foil board or two might be......? I'm sure DD got some demo boards too.

PM what you'd like size wise, and I'll see about finding one...or something close hopefully. You're more than welcome to borrow my 6'0"x28.5"x110 liters if that sounds like something that'd work.
