Title: SUP Foiling Sunset Beach Hawaii
Post by: Beasho on November 03, 2020, 10:01:40 AM
Any advice.

Forecast is for medium to sizable 5-10 foot+ faces.  I’m bringing my big wave foil gear.  Plan to get in early and glide wide.  But where?

👍

Let know where you decide, I'll watch from the shore  ;D

Personally, when I get my SUP foil set-up going again, I'm headed for this spot:

Keahi is towing, but I've SUP surfed it up to about 12ft, but it holds as big a swell as anywhere, just as long as the wind stays favorable.

If it is windy it might be uncrowned.  Otherwise the wave zone to the west of the channel has numerous peaks without the pressure all the way to rocky point.

To the east around the corner is another uncrowded wave zone.

Otherwise the other side of Waimea bay has uncrowded spots running up to lanni’s.

Beasho If you make it here to Maui you can try a Maliko. 10 miles of smiles with no crowds. EVER

Beasho, do you have an orange board?

Board looks like this:  Blue with Black Trim.

I was ~ 1 mile from the Keahi video above.  Sunset Point.  It was a constant 7 to 14 feet.  Never let up.

SUP Foiling, Wing Foiling and Tow Foiling.  Fantastic!!!

Here was a sample of a beating.  People say they don't like being near a foil in the surf.  Just get it away from you.  I have a quick release loop on my waist leash but bettter to plan how to take the hit.  The wind was another uncontrollable however.

You definitely need this leash!!

The "bail early and grab your rail-saver/webbing of the leash" works also if/when you've really hosed yourself, and know well in advance that you ain't making the top of the lip or the head high+ foam ball is already rumbling down on you. But I also run this as my leash, (https://boardmeetingusa.com/collections/frontpage/products/kaohi-grip-leash-coil), and works far better than trying to grab the thin rail-saver of the leash as you're describing.

When I used to do the "rail-saver grab", many a time in bigger stuff I'd have it get pulled right through my hand, leaving a nice little rope burn on time, and a small cut on my fingers/palm another. With the Kāohi Leash", the larger padded handle is way easier to hold, and has yet to be pulled out of my hand.

But I still try to avoid this option as much as possible...too much sharp shit whipping around under the board that's still within biting distance of appendages when you're anywhere near the board/foil combo. :(

Glad you're OK though, and hope you got a bunch of fun ones!!  8)

A few pics.  More to come.

We were staying on Sunset Point.  As our host said "I don't need to travel for surf" EVER!

All the greatness was in front of the house.

The Wipeout stills were more impressive from the foiling footage:

You might not need to travel past walking out your door, but a quick drive over to kahana bay might be worth it since you aren't far away at all.

You mean the road side Auto Junkyard area:) It's like pick-a-part alley....

Enjoy! I have had the privilege of SUP surfing at Sunset Beach in Hawaii. Except it was in summer on a very anemic day :)
