Title: New Armstrong 1250 hs
Post by: winged surfer on October 03, 2020, 04:57:40 AM
I’ve seen it on someone’s instagram story the new 1250 hs front wing.
Compared to the 1550 it seems to have shorter cord and higher aspect ratio.
It will be interesting to know if it can substitute the 1550.
Anyone test it already?
Thanks!!

I think Matt has the 1250 on the wing board in this video. Waiting for his 1250 review video to drop. It looks like a fast foil that might be fun to surf.

Hello Fat,
I got it from the Armstrong foilers group on facebook but actually the picture has been removed from there.
Anyways it doesn’t say the specifics.
Official release date is 16th of October by the way.

I hear that it is thinner than the 1050.  Should be pretty quick!

Foiltheworld appears to like the 1250!  See the comments in his post:

'Also new is this @armstrongfoils 1250HS wing. Pumps & glides like a high aspect wing but still able to carve! HS is no lie, it’s definitely a high speed, low drag wing and you can feel it! It doesn’t have a super low end lift like some similar wings, but the high end speed is a great trade off!
I’m riding it here with 85/60/212/+1'

Ride and report (his report is in the video description):

I like the idea of this wing and all the gofoil nl wings, and would love to ride them.  The limited mast options and big upfront buy in is hard to get onboard with, cost me a small fortune when I sold foils from these brands, could have bought a Mike's Lab foil.

This will be a very popular foil for Armstrong because of its utility in several disciplines including foil surfing, kiting and winging.  Similar in size to the Lift 200 HA but lower aspect ratio.  5.5 vs 6.8.  Fun size but somewhat limited for winging due to loss of low end.  I have to go one wing size up to use my Lift 200 vs any of my larger foils.

Mine arrives tomorrow. Coulda used it today in some head high bumps. 1050 just doesn’t provide enough glide through gybes in rough conditions (or I just suck). 3m BRM and 1050 and umbrella’ing all over the place. Lit up!  Didn’t make it back to my protected keyhole launch so I had to bum rush the shorebreak (king tide so it was gnarly). My method was find a set, follow the last wave in. Rode till I grounded out and jumped. Grabbed the board leash with my free hand and dragged it up out of the impact zone backwards. First walk of shame in a while.

I rode the 1250 today with my 6m. By a wide margin, the fastest wing I’ve ridden.

Unfortunately, Dawn Patrol failed me. All my data wiped out. So no speed data from today.

Great low end. Jacky’s everyday wing. She claimed it, so I bought a second one, after we finished the session.

Super easy to ride as fast as you dare, with zero control drama.

I’ll be riding it way more than the 1850.

Thanks

Wow.

His aspect ratios are creeping up with his latest foils having the highest.  Apparently he is working on what he calls "true" HA wings which will be higher than almost anything on the market currently.  So I am guessing higher than 8.  His early prototypes didn't turn well enough but I guess he is closer as there is some specific info due out soon from Armstrong.  I will give up some carving ability to glide on a super HA foil.

/tuning tips? Eagerly awaiting mine.

I tried my new 1250 for the first time yesterday in 14/16 knots and 1 Mt wave.
Way faster than the 1550, super stable and in control. For the first time I was surfing waves at that speed and in control. I love it!
Oh and guess what? It pumps much better than the 1550.

I'm using my 1250 for wave riding and the 1550 for everything else.  With only a few sessions on the 1250 so far, I feel that transitions may be easier on the 1550, but higher speeds are easier on the 1250.

Vb,
I have exactly your same feeling.
Especially heelside to toe side tack are more difficult on the 1250hs In my opinion

Yeah, I'm still working on my confidence and success rate with tacks, and the 1550 will be the wing that helps me get that level up.  Once I'm super comfortable there, the 1250 will probably be much more approachable.

In other news, did anyone see that HS850 vid on someone's story on Insta?  Can't recall who it was, or I would have taken a screen shot.  Thing looks insane!  May need to see where that can fit into my foiling needs....

TheProgressionPodcast recently scooped an Armstrong rig (finally) and he posted today on Instagram that he’s running a -shim to get a more front footed ride and paired with the KdMaui 13.5” tail wing.

I’ve only run the 1250 with the +1 shim. I’m going to keep experimenting with different setups to find what I like best.

Here's a video of Armstrong explaining where the 1250 fits in the wing range.  He also shows some of his new HA wings and states that there will be a 2021 release of a HA wing.  Armstrong also explains hy his masts are built the way they are.

VB Foil, Winged Surfer and others who have this foil, any further insights on set up for the HS 1250 for winging/prone/SUP? Still waiting for mine (since October!) and have read varying opinions on best set up. What are you liking about this foil? Any real downsides you've found? I'm pairing it with the HS 1850 at 200 pounds for SUP/winging and have been loaned an HS 1550 for a few weeks which has been amazingly easy and fun to ride. Is there much overlap between the 1250 and 1550, or would it make sense to own all three wings? Cheers!

I have owned the 1200, 1550, 1850 and 2400 use sup and wing 105kg/230lbs have had the 1250 for 2 months. It is my go-to wing now for everything I have sold the 1850 as it feels so slow now. With my 6m ding and using the -2 shim 60 fuse and 232 tail I can get going in very light wind. Vids below are using the 1250. I have the bucket hat on start of first vid.

As always, great info Hilly. Thanks. Interesting you sold the 1850. I rode the 1550 on a Saturday in 20-35 knot wind and loved it and then rode the 1850 the next day in a little lighter conditions and was struck by how well the 1850 held up against the 1550. I've mostly only ridden the 1850 in all winds and SUP conditions as it's been my only wing; I'm pretty impressed with the range. Good to hear that the 1250 will still give enough grunt for a big guy in 6M air as well as offering better performance than the 1850 in the high end. Do you still have any use for the 1550?

Hello Wind!
i had the 1550hs but i sold it after i surprisingly noticed i could go with the 1250hs in 11/12 knots with a 5 mt (i am 60 kg and i think i have good pumping technique).
The 1250HS is fast but very controllable in high speed and for wave riding is the best i tried, it never breaches and give you the full control of what you want to do.
I'm using it now with 0 shim but i want to try it with +1.
For now i don't have really downsides of this wing.

Looks like I'm a little late to the party.  Got the 1250 last winter and finally got a chance to go winging in decent conditions.  I mainly ride the 1850 and find it works from 12 to 30 knots.    I've used the 1250 for prone surfing and like how  It turns rail to rail really fast.  Compared to winging with the 1850, the 1250 doesn't get up as fast and the pump cadence seems different.  With the 1850, I can pump 2 X and be up, but it's slightly more work on the 1250.  This might be due to the foil being 3/4 back in the boxes, so moving it forward might help.  I didn't track speed but a cpl buddies said I was moving pretty fast.  It felt stable but I did notice when gusts hit, the foil would move side to side, and had dump wing pressure.  Overall good for the money but the extra performance requires more frequent adjustments.  For winging I can see it being used in 20-30 knots.
