Getting a foilboard through the shore break with a wing is incredibly more challenging than with a kite because you lack lift and bodydragging and the wing will get mowed down by breaking/broken waves. For those reasons getting a foilboard with a kite through surf is much more doable. I have suggested (previously and elsewhere) that having lines (and a reel?) on a wing could allow getting a foilboard out through surf for the above reasons. Crazy and unappealing, I know, but we have a problem -- there is no contesting that -- wings are not as good as kites in shore break.

I recently picked up BluePlanetSurf's retractable board leash. It is significantly longer than your standard leash so it is nice in the waves as it will extend so the board is pretty far away from you on a wipeout. Even if the wing and board end up in line, the board will be beyond the wing, reducing the chance of wing damage due to foil. This could work trying to get through shore break, so long as you are to the point where the foil doesn't have a chance of getting slammed in the shallows.
If I fall in the impact zone, I always prioritize the wing, by holding it up over the waves, or throwing over the waves if possible. You get slammed by the waves, but at least the wing has a better chance!
