Seems like the Foil Videos thread has lost some steam as a lot of us are super stoked and interested in the wing ding thing. So this thread is meant to be a collection of wing foil videos.
Seeing grey haired bigger older guys wing foil surfing was very appealing and still is for me, it was proof for me that anyone can do this amazing new sport/adventure.
So here are the few videos I remember getting me stoked to get the wing ding figured out:

For months at my local beach it was just my friend June and myself and in recent times there’s often a dozen or more out.. Its really catching on.
This was from the other day and my friend ‘Pete’ let me put my camera on his wing.

Did you notice Johnny is riding in a harness on every run ;D ;D No lost power. Hammer down.
-
I caught the Johnny and Billy show at Crissy the other day, so good and inspiring.
Johnny's turns have to be one of, if not the best in the world. I've yet to see him hook in, and never seen him fall.

The more I see videos like this the more I'm tempted to try waterstarts:

Is that the 1150 you’re riding?
-
Yes. So easy to do jibes and endless glides in the smallest of swells. I'm heading to Cocoa this weekend, hope to get some more footage.

Clay- Can you comment on the Mike's Lab foils those guys are using for wingfoiling? I think they may be windfoiling (windsurf foiling) foils but I am not sure. Will be interesting to see what ML will be producing specifically for wingfoiling in the future.

Funnest and best day yet for me!

Thanks Admin.
Mike's Lab foils - I wish I knew more. They have giant masts, like 100cm, if remember correctly front wing is a sorta high aspect anhedral shape. Word is very fast and they keep up with the big tanker waves that are mostly elusive to the rest of us in the bay.

Flat water session with the new GoPro max and new mounting system (modern technocracy). Kinda boring session video for the intermediate rider, but may help out some beginners.

When I watch that I can just sense the kite foil racing heritage. I’m trying to survive for a few seconds backwinded before completing a 360, and not getting it yet. He does it like it’s nothing at all.
I can only imagine the cost of a custom wing foil setup from Mike’s Lab. But, they are the king of fast foils.

Wow some great videos in here! I loved the Frenchie gal riding with the Dolphins. That must have been so fun. :)

I could watch this guy all day long. So smooth. I love that second jibe where he lets the wing fall behind his back an then guides it around the outside like its nothing.
Cool looking board too. Looks like a flat very squared off tail and very flat going forward and to the rails.

I’d put money on it being a recycled kite race board. The pre-foiling era. When kite race boards had windsurf race fins. Gunnar wings with one. Damien in Jupiter foils with one.

Moses 1100, he's been using that in every video. Likely the wing with the lowest stall speed on the market currently. The only competition being either of the newer Gong 2XL wings (Curve Pro / Veloce)
I really like that tack / 360 at 2:48, looks easier than just tacking from healside :)
-

$3300 just to get to a Tuttle connection and a long wait. No info about sizing on the website, would have to be extra to scale it up for larger folks (almost everybody). Those bits under the water are the place to splurge though...

Today...stick with it to the end, to see the just released Lift HA foil.

Nice Dwight, I have been curious about those Lift HA foils. Which Axis foil does it ride most similar to?
-

-
Wow - in response to Robby's video
- that massive buildup of rental cars lining the road
- it's windy enough for Robby to restart as if kiteboarding
- he was cranking on the water, I wonder just how fast
- great footage from his view while catching air!
-
Yeah, I don't know how windsurfers can handle that chop. Having never windsurfed, but have wakeboarded towed surfing in choppy waters, I hated chop!!! So hard on the body. That's what makes foiling so great in my opinion, just gliding above chaos. and tapping in when you want to.
-
Nice Dwight, I have been curious about those Lift HA foils. Which Axis foil does it ride most similar to?
The HA 200 is similar size to the Axis 1000. The HA 170 is close to the 900 in size. The HA250 is similar in size to the Axis 92.
The Lift pumps onto foil really easy and predictable. Almost idiot proof pumping. It inspires confidence, you can pump onto foil at will, in any wind. It does not have the typical for high aspect foils, trait of, pumping up, then dropping like a rock when you get the technique wrong.
The carving and jibing “feel” is Axis 900/1000 ish, and not Axis 1010 or 1150 ish, or GL ish. So that appeals to me.
The ability to pump long distances, without wing power, is better than the 900/1000 and probably similar to the 1010 (guessing without a back to back test)
The mast has too much flex for SUP, but is good for winging. I’ll use them for winging only.
-
Stopped by the delta on my way back from Tahoe. Man that place blows, awesome for winging and also might go crazy being in that kind of wind 24/7 for days upon days :D

Seeing a big guy water start a 6m in sub 20 wind has me recalibrating:
Very cool.
-
Seeing a big guy water start a 6m in sub 20 wind has me recalibrating:
As a former Windsurfer the waterstart makes total sense. When I was out on my first real day I was trying to effectively waterstart day "1". There was NOT enough lift to get me on the board.
On a windsurfer you have the advantage of a mast that you can point straight up, giving the sail maximum vertical + wind exposure, then tuck the board under you feet and do a Hockey Stand. With these rigs people are still schlogging slow and then pumping on the foil.
--> There has to be some in-between. PS - I will never figure this out from the shores of Connecticut.
PSS: I learned from my daughter Ruby to do a water start with this 3' Foil board behind a 5 hp boat. I thought it impossible she said "Dad I can do it just like a wakeboard start." When have you ever wakeboarded I asked? She replied - "I learned it on Wii Sports."
-
Seeing a big guy water start a 6m in sub 20 wind has me recalibrating:
Cool, the 6M Swing has a tremendous span too, would be easy to catch a tip. That video starts from the easy part though, he's already knee up. The previous 20 seconds are what I really need to analyze.
There was NOT enough lift to get me on the board.
Therein lies the problem, if there's enough wind to easily waterstart, you've probably rigged too big though that may be the best way to learn the moves.
That Ghetto foil is awesome btw, was that a piece of driftwood? :)
-

Driftwood, High-End Trash & Gorilla Glue. Here was the build thread. I may have to dust this thing off and get it flying again.
I am not sure I could get up on the GL210 but the kids could. Then you might have nearly indefinite pump ability:

The Heiny Gybe!
Benefit of that one is you get a good view of your downwind transition area. No windows needed for that style gybe. I need that one to avoid the crab pots that have consumed my local spot!

It was always going to be the kids that took it to the next level. We 'old' guys had the advantage of $$$ to buy the first generation stuff and maybe a bit of the mental perseverance to say "I am going to get this." Now that the kinks are being worn down the kids have
1) Time to fly and
2) The ability to bounce

Man, is that some style.
We have 5 groms (at various stages of awesome) here who are all loving the wing. Their sessions are hysterical. It is like max 50 feet between moves and they go for hours like that. Some friends borrowed a little Slingshot youth prototype from Tony yesterday (2 meter?) which looked terrific. His post session smile was brilliant. The kids want this one. They are out their jumping, slashing and backwinding all over the place. It is awesome to see.

Sustained backwinded riding and backwinded with a wing roll to standard toeside riding are on my current bucket list. I still can’t seem to figure out how to best orient my Echo’s while backwinded to add and bleed power when needed. I can sail backwinded on an old classic windsurfer all day long, but it doesn’t help me one bit for wing foiling. Oh well, I’ll just keep chugging away on it......

I see a FSM board under the green winger (Maui Cloud) I wish we had a jetty like that. Looks so fun.
The Armstrong guy is riding nose low and his back foot is shaking and wobbly. Sign of running too small a tail wing, usually.

Holy moly that looks fun! Thanks for sharing.
I had my first 2 wave wing foiling sessions this week. First session was easy and playful, second day current was running with the wind and I was struggling to stay upwind and I felt defeated. Both days the bowl was around head high and breaking like a real wave - I stayed far away from that and flew very conservatively. Looking forward to seeing our better spots get some wind.

This video is from a few weeks ago. Great White North -- Sand Banks near Picton, Ontario on the north shore of Lake Ontario. Big winds, big swell and flat water between the swell. Rider is using an Armstrong foil with a 100 cm. mast (maybe the new 1250 wing foil?) and a 3.2 Sling Shot V2 wind wing.

FoiltheGreats from the vid above inspired me to add my rear strap and launch a couple airs for the first time yesterday. I was pretty timid at first for some reason, basically skimming the foil. Then I started to huck a few and man it is a great feiling. Definitely more slow motion and lower impact that I had feared. Can't wait to keep at the air game!

So a backwinded 360, and what I labeled the Dwight 360, and now what I just saw in this video. I’ll call a drag behind 360. Actually looks even easier than the Dwight 360 and way easier than the backwinded 360., but who knows. Haven’t tried it yet, but next on the list. Way more interested in this stuff than the babbling on about gear :P

so where can I find the Dwight 360 :)
It’s just a name I gave to Dwight’s version of 360. It’s a jibe from heelside where instead of riding out toeside at the 180 deg mark as you would in a common jibe, you continue right into a tack to complete the 360. The wing is overhead the whole time and requires some extra hand switching done quickly enough to keep up with the turn and not come off foil. A backwinded 360 involves no hand switching at all but I guess some people find it more difficult. Wing position, balance and timing can be tricky on the backwinded version.
This wing release and drag behind you version in this latest vid looks pretty cool and easy for us old spastic types, but the guy in video wasn’t keeping up quite enough speed to finish on foil. Who knows, maybe it’s harder than I think. I’ve done “Dwight” 360’s and backwinded 360’s (attached vid), but not this drag behind version. Just different variations of the same turn. I wouldn’t even have known it’s possible without accidentally having the vid show up on my feed!

I got out after work Friday with windfoil/wing friends Mark/Chris. It was typical winter conditions here off Victoria BC waterfront in Strait of Juan de Fuca. 25-35 kn westerly, big wind swell, with a bonus sail past send-off for HMCS Calgary frigate as they are heading out on 6 month tour. Mark is the windsurf rig, I'm the winger on red/black wing, Chris is winger on blue wing. Mark's dad is flying a Nanchang (CJ-6 trainer) with his "wing" buddies and the one deploying smoke!

With new TKR-80 wing
Any sightings of the TKR-80 wing? I suspect its too small for anything I want to do but I was wondering.
PS: DW for you to start hitting 30 mph you're going to need some 35 to 40 mph winds. Jeff Clark hit 24 mph the other day in our Harbor in Half Moon Bay. But it was blowing 35 mph+ and he was on an 8 foot board. There might be something to the stability of a longer board at speed. I can't get over 20 mph when winging but I am still a mere amateur.
PSS: Those kitesurfing crashes were so terrible I had to stop watching

https://www.mackiteboarding.com/ozone-connect-v1-wing-wingfoiling-harness/
I have this harness and got 1st session on it yesterday. It is really nice and minimal. It brought to my attention the fact that mobility especially around my waist makes everything go better. I have been winging an old dakine thermoform and while comfy hooked in, it was cumbersome and limited my waist mobility while doing the whole knee start dance. The Connect is easy to slide the whole harness out of the way to get on board and then slide it to the front when needed. I didn't even notice it was there when I wasn't using it. Highly recommend.
-
Uncertain what harness, I would guess the same.

Clay - Your video and Oration were spot on. You may have missed the Windsurfing Boom in the late 80's and early 90's.
The Winging Craze is round 2 of celebration time. Back then you would show up on some random beach in middle of nowhere. Wind was blowing and people would come out of the woodwork like geese descending on a pond in the fall. Suddenly there were 20 brightly colored sails. Places like Kalmus Beach (MA) and the Outer Banks (NC), Canadian Hole (NC), Corpus Christ (TX), The Gorge (OR), Crissy Field (CA), Rio Vista (CA), Kanaha or Hookipa (HI). . . . . The vibe was typically JUBILANT and FRIENDLY.
No stink eye. No negativity. Just pure STOKE. People literally bouncing up and down they were so fired up.
The places with wind have not changed. I used to say there were only 30 windsurfers in the world and I used to run into most of them at these spots. I remember meeting a kid named Jake an instructor at Cabarete in the Dominican Republic. Then he just showed up at Kalmus beach 2 years later, he apparently grew up in Massachusetts. Then 2 years later he shows up in the lineup at Hookipa. He probably thought I was the one showing up in "random" locations.

I agree.. Thanks Clay.
-
Very cool, thanks for the feedback. Glad we are on the same page.

I agree that salty Ft. Point shortboarders compared to wingfoilers feels like a nice day of stoke but I have been visiting wind spots for 20 years and there are plenty of assholes there too. It reminds me of kiting in the early days. Everyone was overwhelmed with stoke and got along. That didn't stay like that at all the places. Go to the Sherman Island kite launch on any given saturday and you will see a stressed out, over crowded jambhole sprinkled with assholes and selfish behavior. There are definitely a whole bunch of great people too. Winging is really special because of its loose requirements for launching. Kiters have many more requirements to safely launch and therefore are crowded into the good spots. And with crowds comes the short boarder, "its my turn" mentality. Waves are a precious resource. Winging can be done in all kinds of conditions and is plentiful. I like your video with great commentary. Thanks for putting time into your content that you post.

@daswasup - I hear you, thanks.
Wind lightened up so I came in and filmed Mickey:

Ripping!!! I think I know where that buttery side-off locale might be. 980/380 90cm mast crazy short? I love how breaching is no longer a thing to stress about! I bet you guys wooed over to the wing, a few lowly surfers that day. Thanks for posting.
-
While it's hard to say for sure because of the distance...that front wing looks more like a PNG series wing. My guess is the 910...but I agree with the 380 (420) tail by the looks of the tips, and the CS fuse. Clay...any idea of Mickey's setup?
-
Wind was light so Mickey was on 910 and 90cm, his go to sup foil setup.
If I remember correctly he likes the 880 with 105 when there is more wind.
I agree it must be really hard to sit there on a surfboard not catching waves, an appealing foil/wing display has to win some folks over...

First half is Robby Naish windsurfing big swell and in the second half he is wing foiling down wind. I never knew he suffered severely from sea sickness -- who would have guessed?

Stunning video Robert. That spot is fantastic. I got a chance to foil and wing there in November 2020 before I really knew how to wing.
I did manage to get rolled by one of those outside sets. It was 7ft @ 15 seconds and I was trying to SUP Foil (no wing) from the middle of the bay all the way to V's. I kept sneaking deeper, and deeper East to West. Then I got crushed by a 'soft' 18 - 20 foot face. I took 3 more on the head and called it. I'd like to think I was smiling as much as that guy but only after the 1st hit. Then it wasn't so much fun after that.
-
Robert that was awesome to watch, thanks for that.

Filmed Johnny Heineken and the guys having a blast out at fort point, I'm inspired:

Great, Great Video Clay!
This is why we do it. I have already shared this several times with friends and family.
And I am working hard to get good enough to be in the highlight film by next year! Then again those guys aren't going to stop getting better :o
-
Yes really enjoyed that video Clay. Great riding and filming and inspired by your Stoke!

Awesome vid Clay.. Thanks.

Thanks, thanks, and thanks!

Learning to downwind,or downwing, downyacht ,downthing...just some POV rides trying to connect the dots.
It feels like playing chess while riding a bike downhill.Lots of fun!.

Scored a fabulous session in the SF bay. I didn't think a smaller board could make such a difference, it sure has for me:

Nice video clay. I watched the whole thing. My takeaway is ...
Why are BRM wings so much more powerful than everything else? All the BRM wings are 2M and everyone else is on 4m or bigger it looks like.

Thanks! Oh I hadn't considered that, I just assumed the BRM guys are generally more advanced...now I will follow up and poll the guys, seeing the v2 out there now...

Love the video Clay. Where is the riding spot at the 14 to 16 minute mark? I see two familiar boards out there.
The hang gliding is lovely. I like to think I could fly one and not miss a beat. I last flew them in 1985.
-
@gone_foiling Thanks!
@Dwight thanks, that's in Richmond, I saw a couple more of your boards this week, if I remember correctly it was at Coyote Point.
Wow, hang gliding, this sport boggles my mind especially in the fog. I have much respect for you doing this. Seems pretty intense, that guy doing the big turns...I can only imagine how good those feel.

One reason why many indigenous societies have a history of being respectful of the earth and its people is due to their use of entheogens which has slowly been spreading into western culture over the last half-century.

Great video Clay. Loved seeing some of the old Sano footage with a few of the "regulars" doing their back in the day!
It was also fun seeing how far we've come since then. Jason Miller the first foiler in your vid is really flying on a different foil now, while "StandinDan" and "AirBoom Ron" are now riding boards almost a foot shorter than what they were on a couple years ago when their clips were shot.
Fun times for sure, and great look back in time to reminisce of what we were when. :o ;D

Thanks Clay! It also gives a nice look at the board design.
In this video we learn they are riding 96-110cm masts. 850 sq cm front wings and hitting top speeds of 35 knots. 95% use a harness.

Lot's of late season swells this year, some good days at Ft Point:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfQrnreBKOc

Sick Clay, the swell looks awesome. One thing I appreciate about this spot is how clean it can be, where exposed spots in 20+ knots down the coast can mean gnarly surface conditions.
One of these days I'll run into you between MRY-SF. I don't know if racing is your thing but the parking lot vibes are great. There's one at Crissy later this month.

Here is today's video:

The Molokai 2 Oahu Race was cancelled again this year and a shorter course on Oahu took it's place- The BlueWater Hawaiian Classic. The organizers set up a special, shorter course for SUP foilers to be able to race in the bumps- from Portlock Point to the Windsock at Kaimana. They also opened the race to Wing Foilers and we ended up having the biggest field yet of foiler racers on Oahu gather at the start off of Portlock Point.
The video voiceover touches on the history of the race, training, participants, equipment used, technique and strategy, results and more.

water shots: Derek Hamasaki, Eli Maioho and others
The rider on the big wave in the beginning was Brian Sterns, Eli Maihoho was the one hitting the whitewater and Derek Hama is the one doing the crazy carves.
