Title: Any tips for standing heelside toward wing?
Post by: headmount on June 27, 2020, 09:39:17 AM
For wing foiling.  Heelside or 'switch' is tough for me so far but I want to 'get' it because it'll be the key to my next phase where I can trans on foil.  From 20 years of wndsrfng I learned to be comfy with either foot forward but always switched to 'toeside' stance during the trans.  But moving my feet during a turn on foil doesn't seem to work for me.  So I want to learn to ride switch.

When I ride toeside my weight is slightly on heels to counter force of the wing.  Is the trick for the opposite to have more weight on your toes when riding switched?  How about foot placement when riding switched up?

Yes, just carve around and go from weighting heels to weighting toes. It’s easy to learn by not trying to jibe 180 degrees. Jibe 135 degrees and ride away off the wind, toe side.  Slowing ease into a beam reach toe side, as you get more comfortable.

I just spotted another thread where everyone took three pages to come to a common agreement about the definition of toe and heelside.  I agreed with Bill that toe meant facing the wing and heel meant the opposite but everyone else decided differently.

So I'm assuming you mean toeside is facing the wing.

Toeside refers to weighting your toes (body facing away from the wing).

Heelside is weighting your heels (body facing the wing)

I think of it the opposite way.  Heels are toward the wing or toes are pointed towards the wing.  Weighting is something learned not a given.
